Brucas per season ā Season 3
Come on, you can get dirty. Lucas!
Underrated Brucas Moments [1/?]
Do you think Lucas was a bad boyfriend to Brooke the second time around? When Peyton confessed to Brooke that she loved him, Brooke took alot of the anger out on Lucas but i dont think he was actually at fault there. I think the second time round it was all on Peyton. Do you count the library kiss as cheating, to me it was similar to the DE season 2 deathbed kiss?
well this is the thing about brucas because when the writers decided to redirect it to leyton, the writing was basically like, oh their relationship in season 3 was terrible and lucas didn't even really care about brooke and his heart wasn't in it anyway, and i was like, really?Ā
what was this?
this?
THIS? oh my god his hair.
this??
this?
this?
their letters should not be overlooked because theyāre significant. lucas teases her about them because he thinks itās all in good funĀ
but when he realizes that she put herself out there after being severely hurt by him by giving him those letters and that itās representative of her vulnerability and trust in him after such a betrayalĀ
he makes himself vulnerable too by sending letters to her to show that there is no emotional hierarchy in their relationship, which is important
particularly after this exchange from season 1Ā
not to mention the first seven or eight episodes of lucas going through all of brookeās tests and hoops to prove himself
to the point that when they are together and peytonās biological mother died, lucas doesnāt rush to comfort her and only goes over when brooke gestures to him because foremost, he wants to make clear that there are boundaries and he wants to make brooke feel comfortable
then leyton shippers bring up how lucas could joke around with peyton in 3x17 after keith died and canāt even talk to brooke which indicates that they didnāt know each other at all but iām like, kay, peyton and lucas have one 2 minute conversation where he makes fun of her for kissing himĀ
after she nearly bled out and died in the library next to himĀ
so yeah, he wants to make her feel comfortable and then he IMMEDIATELY says that heās in love with brooke (no i donāt consider the library kiss cheating) itās not like stefan and delena where peyton has to tell lucas to fight for brooke or asks what about brooke or directs him to brooke
and then finds brooke and talks to her and says that it means a lot to him that sheās there even if he canāt express it all the time -- and heās expressing it THEN and they have a really tender moment
and then in the next episode itās clear that being with brooke is helping him heal,
Ā and heās talking to her about what heās going through,
and OK even the whole rescue thing, an anon and i talked about this a while ago, he didnāt go and SET OUT to save peyton, he set out to bring nathan back
and i mean if nathan isnāt leaving until he finds haley and thereās blood by the library where your friend and your girlfriend were seen last and you care about your friend and your girlfriend is safe and youāre supposed to be the hero of the show, then why not go see if someone is bleeding out in the library?
just the whole fanfare around him being her hero has me like, itās not as EPIC as itās spoken about but anyway. (putting it out there now since anons may bring this up, the reason why i consider stefan staying to save damon in 8x16 a stelena scene and donāt give much thought to this scene as an epic leyton scene thatās a strike against brucas is 1) the way se/sc end in the episode is a far cry from the way brucas end in this episode 2) steroline was not as narratively strong as brucas)
then in season 4 when they had this exchange
i was like WHERE?Ā
but because he didnāt submit her stuff to the fashion competition but in season 1 he sent peytonās artwork to a magazine that means that he just doesnāt know brooke?? thatās DUMB when they spent most of season 2 bonding
and then were getting to know each other even more deeply in season 3,Ā
which is why lucas can tell her in a rainstorm all the things he loves about her and itās just HORRIBLE writing.
If you need to hear why I love you⦠I can go on all night.

BellyJere & The Five Love Languages + Physical Touch (S3 Edition) (2025)
The Misogynist Writing for Belly Conklin
I find the writing for Belly this season very disappointing. Her volleyball career was given zero spotlight despite her getting injured and having to find a different path. All we know about her interest in sports psychology is from a throwaway line in the first episode. Her interest in Paris? Due to Susannahās influence. Her friendship with Anika and her group in Paris? Non existence and ultimately irrelevant. We know more about everyone elseās goals for the future than our protagonist. We donāt know when she graduates, we donāt know why sports psychology fascinated her and we never saw how being injured impacted her mentally. Jenny claims this is a coming of age story but she isnāt interested in Belly as an individual. And this is further confirmed by what she stated in an interview:
She states that Bellyās core, who she is as a human being, is loving Conrad.
First of all, this is ridiculous after we had Taylor tell Jeremiah that Belly shouldnāt be his whole word (which was correct). But itās somehow okay for Belly to do the same with Conrad? Her loving Conrad to the point of leaving nothing for herself (which was stated by her) was ultimately a good thing? Because her core is loving him?
This explains why her character is so male centered. Her life revolves around the Fisher boys. And despite Paris being portrayed as a growth arc for her, she decides at the end that she never actually changed or did anything wrong because she followed her heart. We watch her kick out Conrad out of her apartment but she only changes her mind after she sees a picture of herself at 6 years old. She concludes that just like she has brown hair and brown eyes, she also loves Conrad. This is the biggest teen show of the 2020s and itās pushing a misogynist narrative. Thereās no self love for a character whose core is only loving a man.
The idea that she isnāt Belly unless she loves Conrad is concerning. Why is she only herself if she is tied to a man? The idea that she spent years lying to herself and lost because she wasnāt with a man who treated her poorly is a terrible message to send. Sheās portraying Belly as someone whose words canāt be trusted and someone who simply doesnāt understand herself. But wait, itās okay because a man, who she has barely spoken to in 5 years, somehow knows her better. She is simply a dumb girl who needs a man to guide her through life.
This doesnāt include the weird undertones of Bonrad. Both characters are shown to be in love with who they were as kids, not the adults they currently are or even the teenagers who dated. The āromanticā flashbacks are them as kids and that is what they can only talk about. The infinity, Junior Mint, etc. Itās a couple whose bond is only nostalgia and past memories. So having Belly make her big decision due to seeing a picture of her 6 year old self makes the ship⦠very weird. Not to mention how Belly is infantilised with Conrad and how much their dynamic resembles the older man/younger girl dynamic despite the 2 year age gap. Its weird and the Christmas photos where she wears the childish pajamas while Conrad looks like a grown man doesnāt help. Also add in the weird sex scene in 3x05 where Conrad talks about wanting to protect innocence about Susannahās illness (weird way to view your girlfriend) but proceeds to have sex with her at the same time. Its as if he gets turned on by her childish naivety.
Ultimately the showās message is that you shouldnāt grow up and that your first love is the only person you should be with even if the relationship was toxic. A guy who disrespects you, crosses boundaries, insults you, called her a mistake, took her virginity without saying āI love youā, etc is someone to aim for. Why? Simply because he was her first love.
Belly showed significantly more growth and maturity in S2 when she was only 17 years old vs the woman she turned out to be at 22 years old. She regressed to a child because that is the only way for Bonrad to stay together. She had to unlearn everything in order to be with Conrad. Jenny had to degrade her character because she believes her misogynistic writing is superior. In the end, Belly doesnāt see her family for a year and doesnāt speak to anyone significant outside of Conrad in the finale. Her and Conrad are shown to be isolated when they go to the beach house which is a sharp contrast with Jeremiah being with all his loved ones for his day.
Belly never got to truly grow as a woman and as a 22 year old, her mentality is closer to a teenager instead. Her agency disappeared this season and she became a passive woman whose decisions were constantly undermined by the characters and narrative. But that is okay, because of infinity ā¾ļø
First time Iāve seen a coming of age show that discourages the protagonist from growing up. The lack of backlash to how her character have been written explains a lot about the political climate. Itās ultimately a show for conservatives, whether Jenny realises it or not. Its a show that believes woman doesnāt exist without a man and that her words shouldnāt be trusted unless its regarding Conrad. And when Belly says no, she really means yes.
