Sometimes I think about how so much of what makes Murderbot who it is comes down to it being a rental SecUnit. When Leonide tells Arada in Network Effect that Company Units have a reputation for being dangerous, she's probably 100% correct. Because of their nature as plug-and-play security for anyone, they have to be designed to be far more versatile than the SecUnits a corporate like BE owns. Three has to be able to secure salvage operations and mining outposts and work with BE's systems and that's kind of it. BE might need its security to fend off hostile takeovers and workplace uprisings, but Murderbot has to be able to do all those things and planetary surveys with unknown hostile fauna, and asteroid mining belts, and whatever the next client might need it to do, and it has to be able to work with whatever other proprietary software the new clients have every single time. It's better at adapting to new situations than Three partly because it's older and more experienced, but also because that's a big part of its function.
And at the same time, Company SecUnits are treated much worse than Three by virtue of being rentals. Many--if not most--of Murderbot's clients didn't want to have any SecUnits, but were required to take them per Company rental agreements for other equipment. Even the ones who specifically did want SecUnits didn't have any investment in what happened to them. They were the equivalents of the U-haul you'd rent to move your couch across town. They just needed to do a job briefly and hopefully be in good enough shape to get their deposit back at the end, but if not, eh. No big deal. Murderbot has never had the same clients for very long, and it's never had to work with the same SecUnits for very long. Every contract changes. Nothing lasts.
No wonder MB loves fiction while Three loves nonfiction. Three has seen basically nothing about reality outside of its job and wants to know what's out there. MB has seen way too much reality and would like some breaks from that shit now, please.

Actually yknow what. WTNV should be considered revolutionary and significant gay media that played an important role in the growth of gay representation in media especially in podcasts. When people talk about important gay media in the early 2000s I want wtnv to be one of the ones people talk about. No if ands or buts about it.
Actually I cant shut up about this. In 2012, people did not even think about putting gay representation in popular media. Gay representation wasn’t considered profitable yet. Gay marriage would not be legalized for another three years. The Legend of Korra, a show that fought to the death to have their main lead hold hands with another woman, just released their first episode earlier that spring. Steven Universe, a show well known for its gay representation, including having the first gay proposal + marriage on a kids cartoon tv show, would begin a year later in 2013, but wouldn’t show their gay representation hand until 2015 with the episode Jail Break. The Adventure Zone, a podcast currently well known for it LGBTQ+ representation, wouldn’t begin until 2014, and didn’t show their hand until 2015. In my young queer experience, representation was covert, secretive, only implied or dead.
and then in the summer of 2012, wtnv introduced itself to the world, proclaimed its main character gay in the first episode, and played it gay (pun intended) for years. Being gay wasn’t a trope, or a goof, it was normal. Cecil Gershwin Palmer was just a canon, gay character who fell in love and stayed in love and was happy. and that was that.

I think it’s really important Cecil Baldwin credit for this. I’m not saying Fink and Cranor and later Dylan Marron have nothing to do with it, because of course they do. But Cecil being gay was not something the writers intended. Because initially, Carlos was not intended to be a love interest for Cecil. He was just meant to be a character that showed up occasionally to be a tongue-in-cheek goof on scientist characters in shows like Fringe or the X-Files. But Cecil Baldwin made the decision to make his character utterly in love with Carlos, because he was gay, and wanted his character to be as well.
For those who don’t know Cecil Baldwin is HIV+, and he’s openly discussed his struggle with it. This is a large part of why his playing a man who is openly gay and sexually active is also really important. The importance I think of having LGBT people playing LGBT people really shines through with both Cecil and Dylan’s characters. They can be authentic, they can be a source of hope and representation. Behind the scenes, Night Vale is just as diverse as the show itself. Cecil Baldwin’s pretty incredible and it’s worth it to read what he’s had to say on WTNV if you have the time.

Suddenly struck with a need to explain to you how boat pronouns work (I work in the marine industry).
When you're talking about the design of the boat, you say "it".
When the boat is still being built, your say "it".
When the boat is nearing completion, you can say "it" or "she".
When the boat is floating in the water you probably say "she", unless there is still a lot of work to be done (e.g. no engine yet) then you say "it".
When the boat is officially launched and operating, you say "she". If you continue to say "it" at this point you are not incorrect but suspiciously untraditional. You are not playing the game.
If you are referring to a boat you don't really know anything about you may say "it" ("there's a big boat, it's coming this way"). But if you know its name, it's probably "she" ("there's the Waverley, she's on her way to Greenock").
If you are talking about boats in general, you say "it" ("when a boat is hit by a wave it heels over")
If you speak about a boat in complimentary terms, it's "she" ("she's a grand boat"). If you are being disparaging it may be it, but not necessarily ("it's as ugly as sin", "she's a grotty old tub").
If she has a boy's name, she's still she. "Boy James", "King Edward", "Sir David Attenborough"? The pronoun is she.
If it's a dumb barge (no engine), you say it. But if it's a rowing boat (no engine), you say she.
I hope this has cleared things up so that you may not be in danger of misgendering floating objects.

LAST BOOK I READ: Witch Hat Atelier volume 14. Scooping coco and agott up and hugging them. There were so many good olly faces, I giggled my way through chapter 81.
A BOOK I'D RECOMMEND: Braiding Sweetgrass deeply impacted me, Robin Wall Kimmerer's prose is beautiful and she presents such a joyful and welcoming view of human relationships to the earth. So much of modern environmentalism frames humans as an evil other harming a fragile, victimised planet - Kimmerer reminds us that we, too, are a part of nature, and together there is love, and strength, and hope.
A BOOK I COULDN'T PUT DOWN: This happens frequently lol. I think the last book I stayed up to finish was All of Us Murderers, KJ Charles' second latest book.
A BOOK I'VE READ TWICE OR MORE: The obvious answer is The Murderbot Diaries. Holding hands with everyone in the haunted library discord. Another answer would be The Locked Tomb series, I think I've gone through them four-ish times now?
A BOOK ON MY TBR: The Javelin Program by Derin Edala has been on the tbr for at least two years. Much apologies to Sunshine, it keeps taking a backseat to new releases and expiring library holds. I'm working on it!
A BOOK I'VE PUT DOWN: I don't stop books very often. One I remember vividly was a collection of Father Brown stories, because the racism made me want to throw it out the bus window.
A BOOK ON MY WISHLIST: I would love to own a hardcover of Piranesi, or the original cover of Project Hail Mary (kicking myself that I didn't get either way back when. I almost bought an edition of phm with the original cover the other day but the paper was incredibly flimsy, it was the first time I decided against a book because it felt bad to hold)
FAVOURITE BOOK FROM CHILDHOOD: An abridged version of The Hound of the Baskervilles was the first book I bought with my own pocket money, so I'm quite fond.
A BOOK I'D GIVE TO A FRIEND: I've been gifting a friend every book of The Adventure Zone graphic novel as they come out. When she gets the last volume it'll be the end of an era.
A BOOK OF POETRY OR VERSE I OWN: Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey. I also have a collection of Emily Dickinson, but I haven't read those yet.
WHAT I'M CURRENTLY READING: I am usually reading multiple books at a time. So. The list - 1. Dungeon Meshi series by Ryoko Kui (i finished up to volume 4 a few years ago and I'm restarting) 2. Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch (sequel to the Lies of Locke Lamora) 3. Something Fatal Happened on the Way to the Forum by Emma Southon (part of my new bedtime routine and goal to read more non-fiction. Having fun with ancient roman murder) 4. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke (been going through the audiobook for like a year now) 5. The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien (for a one-chapter-a-week readalong)
WHAT I PLAN ON READING NEXT: This morning my hold on Out There Screaming (anthology of Black horror edited by Jordan Peele) came in, so that will probably supercede Locke Lamora book 2 for a little while.
