Patrick Jane (The Mentalist)
“If you stop seeing the world in terms of what you like and what you dislike and saw things for what they truly are in themselves, you would find a great deal more peace in your life”
If you read up on PTSD... it will become clear how it was part of Patrick Jane’s character DNA. Bruno did such a good job of building it into this character that it was subtle and accurate.
The symptoms:
- insomnia
- exhaustion
- sleeping during the day
- coping mechanisms: tea drinking, running in the face of fear, latching on to Lisbon
- emotional avoidance
- avoidance of meaningful relationships
- keeping to himself
- difficulty trusting - even Lisbon sometimes- but he overcomes it in some instances
- running away from intense emotions (avoidance of his feelings for Lisbon, running when Vega died)
- wanting Lisbon by his side when he returned to the states - people with PTSD usually seek safety with one or two people they trust.
And the other amazing part is how Lisbon deals with it. We could perceive her as a doormat for Jane sometimes, but mostly she was empathetic and forgiving of his behaviour because she would have been trained to deal with employees with PTSD as all managers in law enforcement. The gentle way she talks to him in season 7 is proof of that. Even after he leaves after Vega’s death and she has to track him down. She’s firm, but gentle with him.
Lisbon is the only one that ever had a chance of reaching Jane. ❤️
Makes a lot of sense.

Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon. An old favorite fandom, now my new favorite fandom again.
This week I learned that 2/3 of American teens don't even know that 6 million Jews were murdered in the holocaust.
This is so shocking to me, as this might be one of the biggest events in human history.
I wanted to share my photos from my trip to Poland, where there used to live the biggest Jewish community, a community that today is nonexistent.
The 'grave' of the famous teacher Janusz Korczak, who said he prefers to die with his orphanage children when given a chance to escape the death camp:
A famous synagogue, that is now a museum due to lack of Jewish people that can operate it:
Auschwitz, 2014, after the nazis made sure to hide the existence of the death camp back when they left it:
Real suitcases of Jewish people who got to Auschwitz, most of them probably died in a gas chamber moments after they gave away their belongings:
(At this point we were asked to not take any pictures, so I can't show you the hair art the nazis made out of Jewish hair)
As part of a ceremony we did, we created a small monument with peace and remembrance in our minds. Mine is a growing tree with roots, to show how we grow using our history as guidance:
Today we have names of 3 million Jews who died in the holocaust, documented by friends and families. The other 3 million are unknown, because there was no one to remember them- their entire family and friends circle died with them.
I have my own family story, and my own grandfather is a holocaust survivor. It's hard to find Jewish people who don't have a holocaust story to tell because every single Jewish person has some connection to a descendant of a holocaust survivor, or is himself a descendant of a holocaust survivor.
There are 6 million Jewish people living in Israel today. Around 75 years after the holocaust. You do the math.
Please, remember this event. Please, don't downplay it. This is not another illuminati conspiracy. This is history, it has evidence, and if we don't learn from it we will get there again in no time.
Thank you for reading.
I went to Auschwitz in 2012. And there are still random days that I find myself stopping, suddenly overcome by a memory out of nowhere of that day.
There is a room, the size of a tennis court, filled with hair that was shaved off people. Another similar sized room full of glasses that were confiscated. These are just the ones that weren't repurposed by the Nazis. Think how small a pair of glasses is. How small a head full of hair is. Now imagine a tennis court filled waist deep with these things. Imagine how many thousands of people that represents.
We saw Tallits, the prayers shawls that adult Jewish men wear that had been confiscated and turned into blankets for Nazi soldiers. We saw the Book of Names which contains the names of the 4.2 million Holocaust victims that we know by name. The other six million or so are lost to us. It's anywhere between 8 to 12 feet long and it contains for each person their name, the date and place of their birth, and if it is known the date and place of their death. If you know of a specific person who was lost to the Holocaust you can find their entry in the Book of Names. For many of the 4.2 million the Book is their only memorial.
When people tell you that birds do not sing in Auschwitz it is not hyperbole. The place is silent except for the sound of footsteps on gravel and the hushed tones of the incredibly thoughtful and compassionate tour guides who lead you through the site.
The entire time we were there we were about 10 minutes behind a Jewish high school group in bright blue hoodies. Blue and white was consistently the only splash of colour you would see in the entire place.
One by one our tour group broke down as we moved around the site. Several of us cried again spontaneously at dinner, just trying to process how you can calmly and methodically do that to 11 million human beings.
In the process of writing this I've been on the phone with my mother and I have asked her if she remembers me going to Poland. She says I came back a different person and that it took the best part of two months for those of us who went there to emerge from the strange grief that we brought back with us.
That was from a single day in that place now that it's a museum.
Now imagine surviving it.
Now imagine all of those who didn't.
I have never been to Auschwitz, but a trip that included a stop in Nuremberg left a lasting impression.
Sadly, the American education system is failing to educate our young folks properly, I believe especially in the last 25 years or so. It is troubling to see posts on this site and others like Twitter and Reddit by people that display a significant lack of knowledge about World History and American History and even basic civics.
Not terribly hopeful sometimes for the future.

Fifty fics featuring infidelity involving our favourite fibbies.
I’ve long sensed a bit of a swell of anonymous appreciation for our ultimate OTP to cheat, whether it be on each other or on someone else.
This list desperately tries to fill that need for something illicit when you’re lacking something from your regular fic. I won’t tell if you don’t. But I think you know where your heart truly lies.
The link above the image will take you to the list on x-trash.com. Discretion (and probably some protection) is advised.
Not always a fan of OTP/ other, but if done well, it can lead to more OTP goodness!
Libraries with a sense of humour.
Maybe I cry a little bit…
