A few questions...

People say we are a democratic nation, a country where the thoughts of a billion people are kept in mind when making a big decision. Then why is it that in such a diverse country it is the feelings of the majority that are kept intact..while the rest are well..left to fend for themselves.

Why is it that ganapti and other religious processions can continue all night throughout the year, but if a Christmas dance in an enclosed space continues later than 1am authorities are called to shut it down? Why is it that we dont see beef on the menu of most restaurants in a country where people of all religion hail from? I do not say everyone should eat it, but why deprive those that do? Why is it that every one wants to be a raj or a simran and the only time christian families are potrayed in bollywood, it is with an undertone of stereotyping.

A few days ago we had a new government come into power, a government which the nation has great hopes with. Some want economic boom and others just pray for clean water twice a day. All I ask for is respect. Respect as a woman…respect as a christian. .respect as a human being. Im not worldy enough or maybe even smart enough to get into a political debate, all I am is a simple Indian girl who would like to see her country prosper and see people around the world respect it.

I am not frustrated, nor am I upset..I just have a few questions that I would like answered. My name is Elaine Melinda Passanha and I am a proud Indian. No my name wasnt changed nor was my religion. India is a land rich in culture and tradition..but somewhere down the line we have forgotten that there are cultures that may not be that of the majority but are still truely Indian.
