And I saw your face in everyone, I swear.
Elliott Smith ⢠High Times
"I know sometimes tragic or humiliating events propel you into a better life, I've experienced that for sure, but it still hurts. It still burns. I think sometimes it hurts more because you can't wish it had never happened. It improved your life in the long run."
- Autumn de Wilde in Elliott Smith (2007)
If youāre all done like you said youād be, what are you doing hanging out with me?

Deep sweetness, I carry you with me. Youāve sung to me in needles and bottles and felt me in ways no one else could. In happiness, in despair, I have known a lightness and an understanding. When everything has felt so real it becomes fake, you did not falter. Always you are with me. When I think of you now I donāt feel empty that Iāll never get to see you, I feel blessed that we got anything at all. Any part of you that you left to this world is mourned, but more than that it is celebrated. Youāve touched so many of us, in ways we canāt begin to explain or comprehend. Long after youāve passed, you change lives. In this way you are always with us, in our hearts you are never gone. Rest easy, sweet softness. Weāll always love you, Elliott.
A beautiful belated submission that escaped my notice in my inbox, sent to me by @edgyfruit (there is never a wrong time to pay our respects to Elliott anyway, is there?)
Drink up baby, stay up all night
To my American followers who are hurting today, I'm so sorry. I'm posting this song in hopes that it may give you at least one moment of lightness today.
I'd been doing, like, four-track songs by myself since I was like a teenager, where I'd sing in a way that I... I just didn't think other people would like it, so I didn't play it for them. But eventually I got over that, which I'm happy that I did. Just, it's kind of a drag to be playing a kind of music that you don't really like as much as another kind.
Elliott Smith on how he began using his distinct vocal style, 1998
Itās been 13 years without you, sweet musical man and the world has been a little less bright because of it. Ā Thank you for always being there for me when I need you.Ā

RJD2 - Ghostwriter
Submitted by @xescie for its use of "I Didn't Understand" as a sample.
Today marks thirteen years. This anniversary is always a difficult one.
A few years ago, I asked followers to share anything theyād like on this day about Elliott. I received a lot of writing pieces about Elliottās impact on their lives, both through his music and his absence. It was one of my favourite things I had done with this little community, which was also a lot smaller at the time.
Iād like to invite you, once again, to submit anything youād like about Elliott today so that I can post your submissions throughout the day. It doesnāt just have to be writing, and it doesnāt have to be entirely personal in nature. I can also omit names and keep your submission anonymous upon request.
XO

Elliott Smithās āHey Judeā
Date: September 18, 2001 The inspiration: After the 9/11 attacks, Elliott felt a need to try and record something to channel some positivity Where: Sunset Sound Studios, where Elliott had recorded many times since 1997 and onward Who: Elliott, Rich Costey, Johan Wohlert (former bassist for Mew), Elliottās father Gary Smith, and a number of other acquaintances What (Narrated by Johan Wohlert):Ā āAlong with him was his Dad, his band and a bunch of hangarounds. Everybody seemed very down to say the least. Elliott just sat there and then said āHello, Iām Elliottā. He spoke in the exact same soft, gentle voice that I knew and loved from his records. [ā¦]āāElliott asked all of us, and I mean everybody in the studio, including Rich and me, to do the 'Na na na na na na naaaa, na na na naaaaa Hey Judeā outro vocal part together with him⦠It was pretty fucking weird standing there, even more drunk and sleepy, screaming Paulās ode to Johnās son in the middle of the night, in a room full of people I had never met before and I realized that I would probably remember this the rest of my lifeā¦ā Aftermath: Although Elliott mentioned this recording to Wes Anderson when he asked for contributions to the soundtrack for The Royal Tenenbaums, Elliottās condition in 2001-2002 ended up resulting in an instrumental rendition by the Mutato Muzika Orchestra winding up in the movie instead. Status: This recording remains totally unreleased and unheard by everyone (including me)
Rick and Morty season 2, episode 7: āBig Trouble in Little Sanchezā, featuring a brief musical appearance/existential crisis prompted by Elliott.
