ヨセミテ国立公園で行われる「フェイスリフト」という清掃イベントで修理した衣類の中でこれは特別な一着だ。このジャケットは僕が25年前に裁縫をはじめたとき、父のために作ったものだ。温かすぎたので、父は地元の洋裁店でベストに仕立て直してもらった。袖がなくなると稀に洗濯するとき以外は毎日愛用するようになった。やがてついにポケットが擦り切れ、裏地を付け替えるために父は洋裁店に戻った。ヨセミテへの途上で父の元に立ち寄ったとき、僕が公園で衣類を修理することを知った父に「よかった！ポケットがまた擦り切れたから、直してきてくれ」と頼まれた。色を指定しなかったので、僕の創造性を発揮することへの許可だろうと思い、パタゴニアのウェーブフェアラー・ボードショーツを再利用した。父は大いに気に入ってくれている。91歳の男の信条を信じてほしい。「古きは新しきに勝り、壊れたら直しつづけよ」

Winners’ circle:

Gilles Villeneuve brings home his third victory in the Ferrari 312T4 for the 1979 Formula One season. This United States Grand Prix saw a lot of rain, and the Michelin tires of the Ferraris worked better than the Goodyears of the opposition. Apparently, Mr. Villeneuve nursed his car around for 25 laps due to failing oil pressure.

懐かしい思い出アンドレ・ゴーノースカロライナ州ローリー

親愛なるパタゴニアへ

パタゴニアを着た僕の写真を見つけたのは、懐かしい思い出の旅に出たようでした。どうやら、家族と僕はなんと30年以上もスタンドアップ、バギーズ、そしてパタゴニアのレイヤーなどを着て育ったようです。Worn Wearワゴンは僕のダウン・ジャケットと「レッド・ジャケット」の２枚を直してくれました。このダウン・ジャケットは寒いミネアポリス時代の頼りになる上着として、そして1990年代には現在16歳になる娘と行ったアブサロカ山脈、ティトン山脈、そしてシエラ山脈でのハイキングやクライミングで役立ちました。10年程前に新しいファスナーと取り替えてもらったのですが、今回ローリーで新しいジッパープルをつけてもらい、イメージチェンジしました。この「レッド・ジャケット」は犬との、そしてベビーカーを押しての散歩やハロウィーン、春のスキージャケットとして、あと20年はクローゼットのなかに居座るでしょう。リペアの必要はありませんでしたが、新しいジッパープルをつけることにしました。現在13歳の息子と一緒にハイキングやテレマークをするとき、彼が着ることになるでしょう。
