content warning: mentions of murder
âWhat other evidence do they have?â Elijah continued on, fingers lightly rounding the beer bottle before taking another swig, eyes mindlessly trained on the Jayhawks game on the tv. âA child pointing fingers at her older brother who simply had the affinity for heavy metal music? It just sounds like a reach to me.â He didnât know Molly, and he barely knew Scott but he knew Mary Ellis. And it didnât make sense for Scott to murder his sweet mother who would have done anything for her children.
âNot to mention the lack of consistency... Different murder weapons... And no disrespect to him but without a high school education I doubt heâs smart enough to devise multiple methods to murder his family. Usually messy murders have only one weapon because multiple weapons... the user would need a strong sense of organization... Like you get what Iâm sayinâ right?â

Yona wriggled free, not keen on being captured and having her energy suppressed. Even if she was somewhat concerned about losing out on supplies, she didnât think this was the best way to ground herself. âI need the hangers. The sticks are a fun bonus, although Iâve always thought it would be fun to build my, uh, visage in Lincoln Logs. Maybe this is the closest thing to an opportunity Iâll haveâŚâ She was starting to get distracted from her path, but that happened even on a good day. âIâve got a lot of clothes, but I donât have a lot of hangers. This is me regaining control of my life. And my closet space. Have you ever tried to hang three jackets on one hanger? I wouldnât recommend it unless youâre in the process of a work of performance art demonstrating the permanency of⌠capitalism or something. I donât know. Performance art is exhausting. Can we retrace my steps now?â
âI have not tried that...â he mumbled in the middle of her rambling, as he understood that containing Yonaâs freak out was a lost cause. Luckily, living in a large city for a decade has prepared himself well for a fast-talker. âIf it helps any, Iâve got a box of hangers back at my grandmaâs. Ya just gotta tell me what you need hangers for and theyâre all yours.â
jasâ eyes narrowed; she wasnât too worried about the new hot shot, returned prodigal son of town taking over the decrepit diner. rosieâs hadnât given the grill a real run for itâs money in years, though she ( only very, very begrudgingly ) would admit that rosie had made the best damn banana nut pancakes sheâd had in her life.Â
âitâs an off night,â she countered, wiping herself off before leaning against the doorframe to the kitchen, keeping him from seeing the true damage behind her. âeveryone else bailed. thereâs a reason i run the front of the house - iâm a charmer, not a cooker.âÂ
âif you didnât come for our clearly superior food, whatchya doing here anyways? shouldnât you be staring at the empty walls of rosieâs? did ya come for tips on how to bring back customers? spoiler, it involves having a cute waitress, and unfortunately your grandma couldnât pay me more than harry could.â also, she was pretty sure the departed woman kept jas away from her building simply because of this, but she wasnât about to let elijah know that. heâd been gone since she was a teen. âif youâre here for my milkshake tutorial, i only do that on friday nights - $20 a pop, and you too can make the meanest mudslide this side of the missisissipi.âÂ
hand over heart, elijah feigned a wounded expression at jasmineâs digs. (although he couldnât admit yet that itâs possible his absence led to the beginning of rosieâs collapse.)Â âyou really know how to hit it where it hurts, jas.â
âand you donât think my smile and charm is enough to bring âem back? nah, if i remember well, old man griggs always had a thing for waitresses of inappropriate ages. in all honesty, itâs probably best that i donât ask you to work for me. keep the creeps away.â
elijah slid into a bar stool, listening closely for any squeaks and creaks. nothing. he scanned the bar itself and only a few dents and dings. nothing like his. run down and could come with its own tetanus warning label. where did grandma go wrong? âi shoulda known you were out here hustlinâ people outta their money. i guess over the course of a decade, things donât change that much.â
Elijah has become reluctantly captivated by the Ellis Family tragedy -- analyzing details, occasionally visiting the crime scene, and stopping in his tracks as he overheard rumors from the moment it hit the headlines in the New Hope paper. He must remind himself he isnât practicing anymore. His life is different now.

With an unlit cigarette dangling from his lips Asher was crouched near the alleyway between the trash cans. He had a chunk of glazed donut between his fingers outstretched like an offering to the alleycat heâs trying to get the attention of. While he knew he couldnât snatch up every stray he came across he hadnât seen this one before. They were a black cat with a little tuxedo of white across itâs chest. âCâmere buddy,â he mumbles, his words muffled by the cigarette. Itâs then he looks over his shoulder and sees somebody watching his attempts to lure the cat. Â
âYâknow just out here making friends,â he chuckles as he nods towards the cat now perched on one of the dumpsters. Â
Elijah thought that maybe sourcing donuts to serve during breakfast time at the diner can bring it back to life -- it couldnât hurt to ask if they could have a partnership. The whole town loved his grandmother. Surely they would do anything to help.
He stopped at the sound of the voice hidden in the shadows and peered his head around the corner to see from what he thought was a very messy looking young man. He acknowledges Elijah but really wish he hadnât. âYou just gotta...â He slowly maneuvered around the guy and approached the cat. He lifted his hand to the catâs nose, gaining trust and building familiarity.Â
After a beat, the stray pawed toward him, allowing Elijah to pet the furry being. âUsed to get a lot of strays on the fire escape of my apartment. Not here but back in...â He shrugged.
âI keep forgetting that people still smoke actual cigarettes. There truly is nothinâ like the Great Plains.â
ââŚFrick on a fucking stick. Have you seen a box of popsicle sticks and clothes hangers? Sorry, craft sticks. Popsicle is the name of the company, and I tragically didnât get to lick all of the popsicle off of these sticks, so craft stick, it is,â Yona said, not quite caring whether the person nearest her actually wanted to listen to her ramble on about her latest problem on top of whatever else came to mind. If she had a problem, it was important not to keep it inside. âConceal, donât feelâ wasnât a healthy way of going about life unless you wanted to cover a fantasy land with trolls in snow. Waving her hands around in a manner that did not connect in any particular way to what she was saying, Yona continued: âI need the hangers more than the sticks, but if you find a box without the sticks, then itâs probably not mine. Oh, well, I guess if thereâs an unclaimed box of clothes hangers around, Iâll take that too. Hangers are expensive, you know? Agh. Wait, are you thinking about the big, uh, news thing? We can call this a good distraction from that.â
"Whoa whoa whoa!â Elijah held into the shorter girlâs shoulders in hopes to at least qualm her anxious energy. âLetâs start from square one, Greenspan. What do you need these sticks and hangers for?â He had some hangers scattered in a closet at his grandmaâs house after donating her clothes to the shelter. Heâd been wondering what to do with them. But he didnât want to give them away blindly to this girl until he knew that her intentions were unharmful. Additionally, were these craft sticks going to be used for good. He needed to get to the bottom of it. âSo tell me, before we can retrace your steps -- what are these items for?â

where / the diner, obviouslyÂ
what / jas may or may not be allowed near the kitchen for obvious reasons. tagging below, but content warning small kitchen fire !Â
âokay, i can explain -Â â she started, even as she tried to figure out how the fuck one was supposed to use a fire extinguisher. there was a reason she was stuck on the floor, taking orders and serving pop instead of in the kitchen, where anyone could accidentally set something on fire.Â
( who left a bag of chips that close to the burner? why wasnât anyone there to pick up after her? this was insane, truly. )Â
the diner had been empty, but of course this would be when someone sauntered in. covered in what could only be described as âfire extinguisher juiceâ ( did it have a name? ) she finally put the extinguisher down, watching the stovetop warily in case it started again. âokay, i canât really explain it but like, it could be worse, right? hope you didnât want a burger right now.âÂ
elijah stepped back with an amused smirk. initially here to ask jasmine if he could offer her a part time job at rosieâs but as he watched the situation unfold before him, he pondered: despite slow business and being understaffed at his smaller establishment, is he sure that he wants her on his payroll?
âno actually. i mean, how would it look that the the owner of a ârivalâ diner starts eating his enemyâs food?â he teased.
âbut i see iâve made a mistake in thinking that yâall have a leg up on us. because... clearly.â he gestured toward jasmine.Â
NAME: elijah beckett
BIRTHDATE & ZODIAC. September 13, 1990; virgo sun, cancer moon, virgo rising
GENDER & PRONOUNS. cis male, he/him
OCCUPATION. Former Junior Associate at Russo & Gideon - specializes in criminal law. Currently runs his late grandmotherâs diner, Rosieâs.
BASICS.
Elijah prided himself in being one of the lucky few to have escaped from New Hope. Despite his childhood challenges â incarcerated father, dead mother, and a grandmother left to raise him even though she struggled to keep herself afloat. Grandma Rosie always said: âMy house, my diner, and my shoes are the only things I will forever have in my name.â Elijah and Rosie were thick as thieves; she was the only person he could consistently count on.
So when Elijah told her that he was going to follow through with the almost-full scholarship to UC Berkeleyâs pre-law program, it broke her heart. How could the boy she raised as her own son abandon her like that?
Berkeley was a culture shock to him â a more diverse population than he had ever seen in Kansas, and the accessibility to culture and arts were incomparable.
He finished out his JD at Hastings, School of the Law and immediately was offered a junior position at a prestigious law firm in the Bay Area. But with prestige came large shoes to fill. Despite his position, he rarely saw his day in court and found most of his days filing and typing out legal documents for his superiors to use. Itâs not what he signed up for. He wanted to help people, and he couldnât do that behind a desk.
But the pay was good, and he loved the city. So he kept his mouth shut and kept his head down.
Twelve years after his departure, he received a call from his grandmotherâs neighbor with the news: Rosie had passed.
Shock, anger, guilt. With the hustle and bustle of a city living legal professional, heâd probably spoken to his grandmother a handful of times since his moving. Was it that he didnât have the time? Or he had built too much of an ego? Or was it that he aimed for the disconnection between himself and New Hope that he knew speaking to his grandmother will just bring him back to rural living. And living in poverty.
But he knew what he had to do. He put in his two weeks at the firm, sold any unnecessary possessions (if he returned to New Hope with a Tesla, he would never hear the end of it), ended his lease early and made the cross-country trek back home to clear up his grandmotherâs estate.
Despite everything, Rosie left the diner in Elijahâs name as well as her 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home.
Itâs been 8 months since his return, and for the most part, heâs been welcomed with open arms. Others have sneered, disgusted with his betrayal. Heâs been using whatever savings he has to renovate the house and make some improvements to the diner, despite the protests of the regulars.
