sleep token fandom PLEASE stop reblogging obvious ai art challenge. please. guys. p
Have you ever done AI art? Go ahead and try and make this with ai. Iβll wait while you attempt to get the masks, body type, body paint, with an ai prompt.
Iβm sick of people calling my art ai. I have been going photo realistic art since before ai existed. Iβm a proper digital artist and Iβm sick of defending myself. People like you are the reason artists give up and stop posting their work. Maybe research shit before you spread lies and hate.
you know what, sure! i'll entertain this idea, why not. i might be overthinking this, for all i know.
looking through your art tag, yeah. you have art & even progress videos dating way back, and i can't say it's bad or not done by you or anything. it's painting over pictures, sure, but that isn't inherently bad or "stealing" (dare i say, it's good practice). but looking at your more recent stuff in the digital painting tag, not from 5 years ago... well, okay. some of it looks clean enough, albeit with mistakes that i really doubt someone drawing Sleep Token fanart would make and keep and post. but others have what look like clear telltale signs of AI generation, mistakes that could not be made if you were genuinely painting it & putting in the effort that comes through in the rest of the work, like clothing inconsistencies, jumbled details, etc. and maybe some of them could be chalked up to design choices, sure, but i am still doubtful. those mostly come through in small details, because AI really, really sucks at those.
^ inconsistent jacket collar, weirdly jumbled shoelaces
^ weird details & asymmetry in the throne (AI often fails at making properly symmetrical details like this, just makes them look "close enough")
^ nonsensical background textures that are very commonly seen in AI generated images
^ just. more weird jumbled details
i want to believe these are all artistic choices, i really do! i'd rather know you weren't using generative AI for this! but with these details and your past works being, well, painting over pictures, i am more inclined to believe that your pieces are at least in some way AI assisted, maybe AI generated bases with some details & the masks added by you later. it would be nigh impossible for AI to generate any of the vessels from scratch, yeah, but i would not put it past you to add identifying details later on, maybe paint over some of the AI details to make it look more legit (though AI gen has been getting better at imitating brushstrokes, too). the "getting the body type right" argument also rings hollow - their bodies really aren't that distinct in the artworks, sorry lol
also, regarding their masks & body paint... well, besides the fact that in the OG post this started around, ii's hands just look light grey as opposed to painted black, i wanna bring up these three of your posts in particular. relatively new, May-June this year.
no body paint, and the masks really, really look like just regular ski mask-types with the band logo added & shaded in later. i know you've mentioned something about "casual outings" in the first one, but man, idk. with you mentioning body paint as hard to get right with prompting (also, just out of curiosity, why'd you mention how difficult it is if you haven't tried?), this here looks like an excuse not to try and do that. and the masks, well. for one, this is very clearly just the band logo with no alterations, not even any perspective warping. even if you forget that that's not what their logo looked like on the cloth masks (hell, i've forgotten the exact look of their cloth masks, save for the fact that the arch has 7 prongs instead of 5), it's just... flat. sure, some facial features are shaded in in places, but that's not all there is. with the presumed understanding of form that the rest of each drawing conveys, you would assume this artist would understand that the logo would warp on top of the facial features and wrap around the face. that is not what this is. there's no shame in using official images for reference or even adding them in directly, but with everything else, this could very well be adding details to a prompt to make it Sleep Token.
idk, man. once again, i want to be proven wrong here. please explain these choices to me in a way that makes sense for an artist. please provide any sort of WIPs or progress timelapse of your pieces from this year. i really wanna believe you haven't used genAI for any of these at any stage, but right now i'm extremely hesitant.
also, just a personal thing. uh. please tell me this pauldron isn't photoshopped in LMAO it looks extremely out of place on the whole piece
ok so also adding on to this. i made a comment on their post about this art looking like AI and they got mad at me, understandably. and their main talking point was about how you can't generate an image like that using AI. i deleted my comment out of shame and wanting to believe them but still feeling extremely off about it and unsure of what i should do.
they said i should do more research and after doing more research and looking at their images looking at what AI generators can get me and confiding in a more knowledgeable friend.
i still stand by what i said, despite the deleted comment.
this is the second time they've posted this specific art piece and they took it down before when people started saying it was AI.
my friend and i have spent about an hour or so finding little details/percieved errors that just don't make much sense for an artist to make in the creative process, and look more like something a machine that's imitating art would do.
additionally they are right that an AI wouldn't make this entire image by itself. but there is evidence that they use the AI images as bases to overlay the sleep token designs on to, i will give them credit for that, the images aren't just ai generated but ai has most likely been used to create them. which is a shame that this person can't admit to being honest about it. that's all i want from this is an admission because they tried to make me feel stupid. additionally its a shame this person has felt the need to turn to ai to gain likes and attention, it says a lot about the world we live in today.
i'd personally find it, and i hope other members of the fandom would find it more enjoyable to support someone on their art journey to develop their skills without the use of AI, even if the digital art isn't perfect, even if they make mistakes, i can respect someone who wants to learn a skill more than someone who uses AI to pretend so they can get a surface-level good drawing, that people don't look close enough to check the discrepencies of. and i respect someone more if they own up to using AI than lying about it and trying to make people feel bad for calling them out. though obviously i cannot be 100% sure they are using AI i will go through the evidence one by one so people can form their own opinions. i don't want people to attack this person unecessarily but i do want them to feel guilty about taking from other artists, and lacking the honesty they used to have back in 2017, and to try and to stop more people from using ai in this way. so this is why i am making this.
firstly there's the images in question themself.
^ii has uneven spikes on his jacket, 4 on the left side and 6? on the right. whether this was a purposeful thing for the design idk but it doesn't feel like a mistake someone just makes, if it is one.
^this looks a little off, especially with the editing gradients around each of the ?spikes? looks as if they've been pasted over another design
^again this gradient/outline can be seen surrounding IV's necklace, it's visibly a different colour than the background, like its been pasted on top. it looks like it wasn't originally there
^at this point its meant to be iii's arm but the presumed AI got confused with the lapel of the jacket and his arm, so his arm appears to be missing a piece out of it. additionally, near the end of the jacket, its hard to explain but basically the end of the jacket gets confused with his sleeve and turns into one thing
^additionally his hands appear to be a kind of cover up that this person has added, which props to them i guess, but if you contrast it with the detail of the face and the shade used on the face, they don't match
^lastly not an outright evidence of AI but something is strange about the way IV's tie phases through his neck
i have more smaller points, like the chain details not making sense in a way that an artist would draw, some of them the links get really unclear
then we take a look at their other recent art.
^looking at the details that the viewer often misses, such as the missing fingernail. logically it wouldn't make sense for an artist who's spending hours drawing and looking at their image to miss out a fingernail, but its much more likely an AI generator would.
^my friend pointed out the inconsistency of the buttons, surely, trying not to assume, someone who had drawn this shirt would choose to have all their buttons look the same, seeing as its the same shirt? instead of different looking buttons.
^then there's the more obvious, AI creating uneven jackets again. one side is visibly a different design and bigger than then other. if this was intentional i want to understand why.
another thing to consider is this person's loss of integrity. back when they first posted some of the art they had done they admitted they hadn't fully created it themselves.
but it was still cool to look at. these days (a 4 year gap between their previous stuff) its sad that they've moved on to presumably AI as a base but try to present it as their own creative work. its disingenuous and kind of hypocritical. saying anyone who asks to see more proof that your work isn't AI, is making real artists want to quit. when in totality its the fact that AI art that can make such pictures with little effort that gets used and endorsed by these people is making it harder for artists that have practiced their skills for many years and perpetuating the idea that art is a product to be consumed, that it doesn't matter how you got there. whether a machine generated half of it and you barely did anything but colour overlaying or whether you spent hours meticulously designing it.
anyway i hope that if you have a conscience, you change your mind about lying to people and if you have proof i'm wrong, because i wish i was, i hope you can show it to me.
I canβt make you believe me. I canβt make you trust me. I know that I drew these. Yes there are missing bits, no they arenβt perfect. I didnβt intend for them to be. They are fun doodles I threw together at 3am because I had an idea and couldnβt sleep. The inconsistency you point out arenβt due to ai they are due to laziness. Iβm sorry that I use brushes and work arounds to not have to draw each individual chain link or spike. I use layers so certain colors donβt blend together with the under layer.
And the art you are referring to from years ago were done with a fun app but that doesnβt mean the rest of my stuff is the same. Havenβt you even played with an app and made something cool? Jez! Forgive me for experimenting with technology and not doing everything the super hard way all the time.
Again these arenβt perfect. I didnβt spend hours on them. I used brushes for textures, I left in sketchy lines, I didnβt line shit up properly. It was a cute idea that I got late at night and put together. Would you harass and tear apart someoneβs doodles in a sketch book and point out all the bits that are out of proportion or look off?
If you donβt like it, move on. I drew these. I posted all the proof you are going to get from me. I refuse to sink to the level of having to defend my art anymore. If you donβt like it move on. I donβt make it for you. I make it for people who donβt dissect every single thing thatβs wrong with it. Sorry I missed a fingernail, sorry I didnβt shade something the way you think I should have. They are doodles! If I was selling these or commissioned for a piece theyβd be more βput togetherβ forgive me for being lazy and not making pristine pieces of art for free for the internet.
Nothing I say I do is gonna make you believe me so Iβm done. Congrats, youβll never see another piece of Sleep Token art from me again.

I will admit the sleep token pieces arenβt my best, I did not spend as much time on them because theyβre for fun quick pieces that I enjoyed making. The βjumbledβ bits are brushes in procreate. I didnβt go back and perfect any of my sleep token pieces because again they were quick fun pieces that I donβt ever plan on printing or selling or even displaying. I had an idea and I got it out of my brain as quickly as I could. Could they be better yes, do I care, no.
This happens every time I post in a new fandom, I should have been prepared to defend myself. I have an entire gif of progress for the IV painting. (Iβm on mobile and the app refuses to load it here for some reason).
The βwonkyβ background and patterns are all brushes that Iβm playing with in procreate. Itβs a new program to me Iβm usually on photoshop. Iβm trying new shit as an artist because I honesty gave up on my talent during the pandemic because I was tired of being called fake. I used to put a lot of effort and heart and energy into my art but now it feels wasted because I spend more time defending myself than making it.
Iβm sorry that ai has ruined things for people. That it makes it easy for people to cheat.
And yes I have played with ai as everyone has, itβs a new tool. I use it for work to help generate randomization and funky backgrounds. I use it to see poses that I canβt wrap my head around. I use it for fun to see all the crazy inconsistency it can put into one image (because they are many and insane why canβt it get hands right itβs ridiculous)
I appreciate you being civil about your calling me out and not out right attacking me as others have done. But I see now that Iβm still spending more time defending my art than making it and itβs not fun anymore. Itβs not just you, itβs the world at large. I wish people could just enjoy things without destroying them. But weβre humans and thatβs what we do.
switching to my main as to avoid flooding the other blog. i understand you're sick of having to defend yourself, but could you please show me those brushes? and if tumblr isn't letting you attach the gif here, could you please dm it to me on discord (copper_sands), for example, or upload it to imgur or something and send a link? i'd also like to see the layers of at least one of these works, if possible. you can block me if you'd like, i won't blame you for it, but i genuinely want to know & so far, i'm sorry, you didn't give anything credible for us to see for ourselves. i would really like tangible proof, if you'd be inclined to give it.
The gif is on my instagram
Iβve got video of my making past works on my Facebook because this happens a lot. I donβt mind you calling me you, honestly it keeps me honest and I understand that there are people out there just using ai and posting without alterations like they did something impressive. I know that my art isnβt ai generated and thatβs all I can offer. If you chose to not believe it then thatβs fine.
