/Note/ gender neutral reader, no warnings, mostly fluff, maybe a slightly softer Aku? But I wholeheartedly believe that if you manage to tame this man, he would be surprisingly soft with those he cares about! I mean, we see how he obviously cares for his sister, even if it’s in a quiet Aku-like way. Idc, Ellie is admin on this server. *evil laughter*
Our emotionally stunted, sickly, Victorian goth-esque, wet cat of a man… where do I begin?
It was a long, most likely, confusing road for our dear Akutagawa to even realize he had such feelings for another person. He is wholly unfamiliar with any sort of romantic territory. At first, he was taken aback and a little disturbed. Though contrary to what some others believe, I don’t think he would hate these new feelings. I like to think he would be more morbidly curious than anything. Akutagawa is generally an apathetic person and would definitely be caught off guard for a while.
Akutagawa would spend a lot of time processing, trying to understand why he can’t seem to stop thinking about you, why he can’t help but want to spend time with you. Longest slow-burn ever… in all honesty it might either take an outside influence to help him initiate any sort of relationship or you yourself would have to express your feelings first.
If you confess how you’ve been feeling to him, Akutagawa might excuse himself from the situation to reflect alone on what you’ve told him. But! Don’t panic, he will get back to you, our emotionally constipated man just needs a moment to think.
He’ll ask to meet up with you, the two of you will then have a small discussion on how you might like to proceed further. Akutagawa will reluctantly mention his inexperience with romance and relationships. You’ll reassure him that the two of you can move at whatever pace feels comfortable, there’s no rush in this. Akutagawa seems content with that answer so…
Congratulations! You now have detached, mafioso boyfriend who looks like he got locked in a hot topic from the late 1800s. On to the actual relationship stuff! Yipee!!
Akutagawa has no idea what he’s doing, and he is far too proud to ask anyone for advice, so the beginning on the relationship would consist mostly of café dates. They may be a little awkward at first, he isn’t sure what to talk about, so again, you may have to take a little initiative. After a while Aku will start to get the hang of things, it’s actually really endearing to see him trying so hard to make sure you’re both enjoying this time together.
Once you two fully establish your relationship and are more comfortable with one another, Akutagawa will start suggesting more creative ideas for dates. Aku will take you to local antique or thrift stores. He likes antiques and small decorative items and would love to share this thing with you he enjoys. Akutagawa might also suggest going to the library and would be willing to give you book recommendations, granted if it’s something you’re interested in!
And don’t be afraid to throw out your own ideas for dates! Akutagawa is surprisingly passive and would be more than okay doing something you enjoy as well, so long as the activity doesn’t require him to be around too many people and isn’t physically demanding. (Our boy is sick after all)
100% canon, Akutagawa is into poetry, Ellie says so. Because of his inability to properly express his feelings to your face, Akutagawa would instead choose to write little poems for you to find. They’re usually pretty abstract and most of their meaning can be left up to interpretation. Though, occasionally, when he’s feeling particularly sentimental, he will leave one for you that’s a bit longer. The longer ones are far more definite in their meaning, they often express his gratefulness for having you in his life and Aku does his best to put his feelings for you into words, it’s a little messy, but very real. You can always feel the care he puts into his writing.
Assuming in this scenario that you are not apart of the mafia, maybe you’re a civilian or a member of the agency, Akutagawa will do everything to keep you away from his work. He does not play about your safety. None of his coworkers will know you exist. He will refuse to give you any details regarding his mafia business. You will know that he is a member of the Port Mafia, but you know better than to ask questions. Aku is very strict with keeping you separate from this part of his life, but it’s because he cares deeply about you.
Akutagawa’s sister, Gin, will figure out pretty early on in your relationship that her brother is seeing someone. Gin might tail you at first to make sure you aren’t a threat to her brother, but once she discovers that you hold no ill intentions, be prepared! Gin will pester her brother into meeting you, eventually, Aku will give in. And because you, dear reader, are so wonderful! The meetup goes well; Gin approves! She actually really likes how much you’ve gotten her brother out of his shell and appreciates you for making him so happy.
I’m running out of ideas… so final thought for the post!
It may take a while for Akutagwa to warm up to physical contact. Throughout most of his life touch was often negative and was associated with harm. Because of this, at first, he will be very reluctant to anything other than hand holding and the occasional side hug. It will take some time. I’ve always envisioned a very emotional moment happening between him and you, perhaps he’s sharing things about his childhood, Akutagawa becoming visibly upset. You embrace him, tightly. Aku has an instinct to push you away but instead wraps his arms around you and buries his face in your shoulder. You think you feel tears hitting your skin, but you don’t comment on it. You stroke his back and hold him tighter instead.
After this physical contact becomes easier for you two.
/End Note?/ Sorry for that slightly depressing ending. :< These are all the thoughts that come to my brain immediately when I think about a relationship with Akutagawa. I tried to keep these *mostly* fluffy because our boy has been through enough. Let me know what you think! Ellie out, peace!
Bungo Stray Dogs Abilities Explained Sort of…? Part 1
Dazai’s No Longer Human:
Nullifies a skill user’s ability upon Dazai making physical contact with said person,
There are no exceptions to Dazai’s ability, meaning any person he comes in contact with will have their ability nullified under any circumstances,
It does not work on supernatural non-abilities such as Lovecraft’s eldritch form (we will get into that later believe you me…)
His ability is passive, meaning he cannot turn it off, it is always active, anyone who comes in contact with him will have their ability nullified whether Dazai’s wants that to happen or not
Dazai does need to make skin on skin contact with said person to do so
Akiko Yosano’s healing ability does not work on Dazai due to the previous stated reasons… however,
There is a loophole to this, in theory if Dazai were clinically dead, as in no brain activity/function she can still heal him in this veeeery short timeframe (apparently this is roughly estimated to be 0.5 or 0.05? seconds.) (I need to do more research on the validity of this claim/theory)
Extra Shit to be Explored/Researched:
I am not sure yet as to how Dazai’s ability would function in conjunction with Dostoevsky’s ability. Ex. If Dazai were to be making physical contact with Dostoevsky, therefore, nullifying Dostoevsky’s ability, would Crime and Punishment still activate if someone then killed Dostoevsky or would it be cancelled out? Is Crime and Punishment a passive skill as well?
Also, if the Yosano/Dazai theory is true does that mean that abilities in this world are dependent specifically on brain activity/function or is there more nuance to it? Are all abilities and the conditions upon their activation therefore different? Or are they all similarly dependent on brain function? How do abilities function when it comes to consciousness and unconsciousness? Can they not be used unconsciously, like with Atsushi unknowingly using his tiger form before he joined the agency. (AAAAUUUGH I’m gonna have to do so much research…)

I might expand on this in the future, the nature of abilities in the Bungo universe really interests me, and after I wrote all this I ended up with a lot more questions so.... I guess we'll see. Peace out :]
because Dazai is able to make contact with Ranpo’s hair and he is sure of Ranpo had an ability, that would be enough to cancel it. So it means more just, physical body to physical body than skin to skin. Even if not that question still stands because he could like, use a piece of his skin for this: would Dazai’s ability work if it was a part of him touching an ability user but not like, himself?
like if he got hair on you, could you not activate your ability? Or would it would require something, more. Like. Would it need to be a flap of skin or piece of his bone or something to be able to cancel out the ability? Or does it have to be the living breathing Osamu Dazai who touched you to nullify the ability?
I don’t expect you to know the answer to this I just think about it
that’s actually an interesting point! So this does happen in the anime, however, it doesn’t happen at all in the manga. It can be I guess implied that Dazai may have secretly touched ranpo to see if he had a skill, but it’s never actually shown. It’s also worth mentioning that since ranpo never had an ability to begin with, even if Dazai could annul someone’s ability by touching something like their hair, that we wouldn’t be able to use this interaction any proof anyway.
as for the second part of your question, my first instinct is to say that you would need the actual Dazai to nullify an ability, not just a piece of him. Like I mentioned in my post, it does appear that No Longer Human does require brain activity or functioning from the body to activate… though I’m not sure 🤔
huh, very interesting follow up though! Thank you for engaging with my post 🤗 maybe I’ll have a more concrete answer later 😭
I have another follow up question and that is if you think he could use something made by Doppo Poet. Because the ability, is the transformation of the paper to the item. Would touching the item undo the ability? Would back into paper or just, not exist anymore?
Along those lines, do you think someone could create an illusion of Dazai, or would nullifcation how block that?
I actually know the answer to this! :) So in the light novel, Osamu Dazai's Entrance Exam, in chapter 3, Kunikida creates a gun using Matchless Poet and actually shoots Dazai with it, but because of No Longer Human, Dazai is unaffected. Kunikida then hands Dazai the gun and the pistol turns back into paper. So, in conclusion, Dazai is unable to use objects created by Matchless Poet.
As for your other question, I'm not entirely sure about how an illusory ability would affect Dazai. I'm pretty confident in assuming that someone would be able to make an illusion of Dazai so long as the conditions for making the illusion does not require the person to make physical contact with him.

Akutagawa giving up his coat and why this is significant: aka why this shit destroys me emotionally every time…
Ryuunosuke Akutagawa is not a man that is ever willingly vulnerable, in both an emotional and physical sense. This is especially evident when you take into account his rough childhood and then his eventual decision to join the mafia at a still young age. I will briefly touch on Akutagawa’s childhood, his dislike for removing his clothes as a result, and then discuss the events leading up to him giving his coat up to Atsushi during the cannibalism arc in the manga.
Akutagawa’s childhood:
Akutagawa grew up in the slums of Yokohama orphaned alongside his younger sister, Gin. Because of their situation and the violent streets they unfortunately had to call home, Akutagawa had started forming this dog-eat-dog mentality that later morphed into his extreme worldview where he believed only the strong survive and the weak will be left to be crushed. Hence, now why he is so cruel and emotionally closed off. I believed this was only exacerbated when he joined the port mafia. (I might further touch on his past on a later date)
Dislike for removing clothing aka giving up rashoumon:
Due to his distain for being vulnerable, I believe it’s safe to assume that the removing of his clothes likely makes Akutagawa very uncomfortable, especially in the presence of others. Removing his clothes equates to giving up Rashoumon, his only physical defense against those around him. It’s also stated in his character sheet from volume 2 in the manga that he dislikes baths. I feel we could assume this to be further implication of his unwillingness to remove clothing for longer than necessary.
Giving the coat to Atsushi/the events leading up to this:
This brings us to the cannibalism arc where Akutagawa and Atsushi are dispatched by Dazai to hunt down the virus ability user. The mission goes as per usual, with these two arguing about every little thing. Akutagawa then threatens Atsushi physically and verbally to which Atsushi responds with, “You’re always like this! All you think about is slicing up the enemy before you. It’s no wonder Dazai-san chose to abandon you and disappear!”
Akutagawa doesn’t respond immediately and is shown having a surprised or kind of introspective look on his face. He is silent for a while, and his expression is intentionally obscured. Atsushi at this point thinks Akutagawa is considering violence, but instead Akutagawa lifts his head and plainly says, “Yeah.”
They continue with their mission, Atsushi then asks Akutagawa why he thinks Dazai wants to pair the two of them up so often. Akutagawa only says that it’s pointless to try and gauge how Dazai thinks and tells Atsushi that Dazai puts a lot of trust into the weretiger but silently expresses his own doubt for why Dazai would put faith into himself. Akutagawa asks Atsushi why he joined the operation; Atsushi only says that he feels he needs to help others, he needs to do what is right. Of course, Akutagawa doesn’t understand that motivation and asks why again, only to be interrupted by enemies.
Much later, during their fight with Ivan Goncharov, the two of them are trapped by Ivan’s ability. Akutagwa once again demands Atsushi to answer his earlier question about his motivation for fighting. Atsushi says that he won’t answer because Akutagawa already knows what he will say, referring to Atsushi telling Akutagawa much earlier in the story that he fights to seek permission to live, to escape his past at the orphanage. Akutagawa says, “Yes. But your then-master is dead. Aren’t you free now?”
Atsushi sadly responds, “He’s not dead. He’s still here now, standing behind you.”
Akutagawa has this look of shock and realization that crosses his face. He then gives a small smile and tells Atsushi, “I suppose he’s far crueler than my own mentor.”
Akutagawa relinquishes his coat to the weretiger, leaving himself defenseless, and sends Atsushi off to defeat their enemy.
So… to conclude, I believe this was the first time Akutagawa came to understand Atsushi in a very real way, and this moment of understanding is why Akutagawa then chose to lend Rashoumon away. Akutagawa could finally see a bit of himself in Atsushi and how similar the two of them are while being so fundamentally different. This is one of my favorite moments between these two due to the sheer trust Akutagawa is having to put in someone else, such beautiful character development… I love them so much.

I am currently only doing headcanons, however, I might branch out to scenarios or whole fics in the future
I am primarily only taking asks/requests for x reader content
Willing to write fluff, nsfw, and angst
No romance for underage characters, I might do strictly platonic content if I feel inspired to
I will write for almost any character, I am the most comfortable with the ada and port mafia
And I will keep the reader gn unless otherwise requested, I will also try my best to also keep the race and/or any physical characteristics as unspecified as possible
...I am new to writing for fandom so your patience will be much appreciated! And I always welcome constructive criticism! ;)
