From the last of my pencil sketches done on a trip into the mountainous counties and the deserts east of Los Angeles in Spring 2023, here is a view from the freeway of Mt. San Jacinto enshrouded with clouds.

The year 2023 gave us an extended spring. The rains didn't stop until well into May. Foggy and overcast days were plentiful in June. Flowers were everywhere. Butterflies, all kinds of insects as well as amphibian and reptilian life were hatching and populating every bush, rock cavity, and flower. I turned my attention to the flowers. The Yuccas were blooming on the mountain ridges. Instead of focusing on just the flowers, I incorporated the whole view into this work. The newly opening up Yucca flowers are just beginning to release their delicately sweet aroma. The fog is starting to roll in from the ocean, covering the canyon like a soft fluffy blanket that is bringing nourishing moisture to prolong the spring and water the animals. In the distance, you may recognize the rocky cliffs of Topanga Canyon. This is the area near Saddle Peak. If you look closer, you will see some tiny insects I invited to fly around in this painting to feel the gentle air movement.
