breaking your own heart // Kelly Clarkson ... stone // Alessia Cara ... tomorrow will be kinder // The Secret Sisters ... lay me down // Sam Smith ... have you got it in you? // Imogen Heap ... things we lost in the fire // Bastille ... slipping through my fingers // Mamma Mia ... rabbit heart (raise it up) // Florence and the Machine
Sadie was off at a friendâs house, the opportunity had come up the moment Sam was able to screen the family and make sure agreeing to let her daughter spend the day with the blonde child wasnât going to put her in harmâs way. Having stuck a tracker on her daughterâs phone should have left her feeling relieved. Instead, Sam spent every couple of minutes looking up from the newspaper she was reading and double checking that her location hadnât moved outside of the spots she and the girlâs mother had discussed.
She didnât catch what the person stood in front of her had said but looking up from her phone left her under the impression they must have said something to her. âSorry I didnât catch that,â She sighed and put her phone back in her purse, rolling her eyes before she continued. âItâs the first time my kid is over a friendâs house in the new city and Iâm turning into a helicopter mom.â
Allie had been certain she recognised the woman as the mother as the child that Cassie sometimes played with at the Tower - but when sheâd spoken and gotten a blank look in return, sheâd started to second guess herself. Fidgetting with the buttons on her coat, she smiled weakly. âI just asked, are you Sadieâs mom? My daughter, Cassie, she really likes playing with her.âÂ
It made Allie feel a little guilty, truth be told. She hadnât meant to draw her daughter into her isolation, but sheâd hired babysitters rather than taking her to daycare, which meant Cassie had barely been around other children. âI donât know how Iâm going to handle it when she starts school later this year. Iâm not convinced Iâm not going to homeschool her yet.âÂ
The taxi pulled up to the towering building and the driver sent her a surprised look, as though having a movie star in his back seat wasnât already the highlight of his day. The destination that she claimed to now live only adding an extra detail of flair to a future ice breaker. Her heart had felt heavy every since getting the news of what had happened to their childhood home. Of course Allison had intended to book the first flight back and help her siblings, but she had a doctorâs appointment that couldnât be postponed and getting everything switched over to her new address had taken a bit longer than sheâd intended. But her siblings had said that things were mostly handled, they even had a new home already.
The doors to the tower opened to reveal a large lobby and she couldnât help how her expression changed to one of slight shock, eyebrows raised and mouth slightly agape as Number Three took in the drastic change to the cool modern lines of the new interior as opposed to the warm antique wood and prestigious trophies sheâd grown up with. The observation didnât last long though, her suitcases heavy as Allison made her way over to the elevator and pressed the floor number she was moving into. She still needed to call her siblings and let them know she was finally back in town, but figured a shower after the long plane ride would be and understandable first priority.
Dark eyes look up as the elevator opens before reaching her floor, a smile of greeting instantly spread across full lips as moved her bags for who ever was entering.
The little girl darted into the open elevator, laughing ringing. âI won!â She declared, looking up at the woman. Cassie was not shy at all, instead studying her.Â
Seconds later, Allie managed to catch the elevator door just before it closed, slipping inside. âCassie - oh, hello.â She gave a sheepish smile towards the other woman, instinctively tugging Cassie closer to her. She didnât think anyone in the Tower would actually hurt Cassie, but Allieâs world had been a very lonely one before now, and she wasnât exactly good with strangers.Â
Unlike her daughter.Â
âMommy, is she magic like you?â At the disapproving look from mother to daughter, the girl giggled and beckoned for the other woman to bend down so she could whisper. âMommyâs not really magic, itâs science. Itâs better than magic because itâs real.âÂ

âAh, so you canât create any elements from nothing, you can only move them,â He said, trying to understand, and very clearly interested in what she had to say about her powers and what she could do. âThatâs really cool. Did it take you a long time to master it? Like, Iâve always wondered if using these powers came naturally or if itâs more of a practiced skill like drawing or playing an instrument. Or does it just depend on the person?â
âPrecisely.â Pleased he understood, and always happy to discuss things, Allie smiled at him. âIt took a while for me to figure out the extent of my powers, I suppose. A certain amount of instinct is required for anything, but I find that to actually have control, you have to practice using it. But some powers are different. Mine affects the physical world around me, but those that effect the individual body or mind might be a different matter. Makes an interesting hypothesis.âÂ

â marvel comics, yeah. this tower belonged to the avengers.  not the same as x-men, exactly.  most of the avengers didnât have powers, per say.  iron man created his own suits, captain america was a suped up soldier because of an experiment gone wrong â same as the hulk â and black widow and hawkeye were just exceptionally trained assassins and agents.  in the comics some of that was different, but this is definitely an MCU tower. â  there was no trying to deny it;  jax was geeking out.  just walking into the tower,  whose lobby looked  E X A C T L Y the way it had been depicted in endgame, was enough to make every synapse in his brain start firing at an accelerated rate. â x-men were more like the umbrella academy.  everyone has their unique abilities, no real reason behind them. â
jax couldnât hide the smile that teased his features.  â some of the worldâs most horrifying atrocities have been committed in the name of science. â  he pointed out, not unkindly.  â iâm not saying the ends donât justify the means, but. â  he shrugged.  â yeah. â
â famous last words. â  jax murmured as they ventured further inside, nearly jumping out of his skin when the AI greeted them. holy shit.  â whaaa - hey, jarvis. â  he tried to recover, coughing to clear the increase in pitch of his voice.  â so ⌠this is really the tower, huh. â  his eyes were wide, casting a glance around. â how many floors are there ?  is there a bowling alley ?  i bet there fuckinâ is⌠â
It was a little amusing, seeing Jax act this way over a building. It reminded her of when Cassie saw Disney things, all giddy and happy. âI guess Iâll have to watch the movies. I did watch Wonder Woman, but thatâs DC, isnât it? Theyâre different?âÂ
Amused by his point, she gave him what Cassie always called a âmom lookâ. Both unimpressed and amused. âI have no intentions of hurting anyone with my experiments.â Not again, anyway. After Johnnie, she was being a lot more careful. âI havenât even gotten to animal trials, Iâm just trying to study the unique identifiers in our DNA to understand where our powers come from.â Remembering that she wasnât exactly supposed to have some of the DNA samples she had secretly collected, she flushed. âI mean, my DNA. Iâd like to study everyone else, but people get upset with the idea of being labrats, like thereâs something wrong with that. Iâve always been a labrat.âÂ
Allie didnât know what to make of the voice, but obviously Jax knew what was going on, so she decided against running away.Â
âThere are 93 floors. Thereâs currently no bowling alley, but Iâm certain one could be placed in. After all, the Academy has already done the seemingly impossible by bringing me here.âÂ

It being hard was an understatement. Try damn near impossible. But then came the mention of a daughter, which truly lightened the mood. âA daughter? Thatâs wonderful. Iâm very happy for you.â He replied, stopping the questionâs there, feeling like he might be getting a little too personal with someone heâd met only a few minutes ago.
âI truly am sorry for taking up your time. You better head out. I can come back later and hopefully one of the people Iâm looking for will be here.â
Realising sheâd taken up too much of his time, she flushed a little. âRight. Sorry. I hope you find them. Itâs not easy keeping track of the people in this place.â She headed towards the door, knowing she needed to get back to work as well. Between raising a daughter and working at the hospital, she didnât always have time for her own research. âIt was very nice to meet you.âÂ
I hate the name Caitlin.

âI appreciate it,â Alaric murmured. Talking was certainly a better distraction than fretting over his sonâs well being. The worries were still there but he didnât feel as helpless with someone else to talk to about it. If anything, the most relieving thing was his no longer feeling like he was going to end up panicking. âHeâs with a sitter but I- I donât like not having him on me.â
âHe screamed at me for not sharing a beer with him the other night,â Alaric chuckled. âLittle tykeâs bottle wasnât good enough.â His footsteps faltered once they passed the large amounts of debris from the first one that went off. âI havenât exactly gotten used to not having him on me constantly.â
âYou donât have to explain.â Allie hated leaving her daughter behind at the best of times. âCassie has to start school in a couple months, and I think Iâll handle far worse than she will.â Having been homeschooled her entire life, Allie had always been secluded from others. Cassie wouldnât be, and that was scary for Allie.Â
Laughing at the image his words put in her mind, she shook her head softly. âWhat we have is always better. If Iâm getting lunch out with Cassie, Iâll just order something bigger than I could eat on my own, because Cassie will eat off my plate instead of her own.âÂ

Hazel nodded once. He thought heâd found his one good thing. But she left him. Sent him back to square one. Turned him into a lost puppy left out in the cold. âI thought I found mine. But it ended far sooner than I expected.â He replied, feeling like he could use a drink, or two.. or four.
âWhat makes you happy, if I may ask.â
Remembering Johnnie, Allie took a second too long to answer the man. âItâs hard when that happens.â Shortly after losing her husband, sheâd discovered she was pregnant, and that had pulled her back from her grief. She couldnât be a good mom if she was feeling sorry for herself.Â
âUm, my work. I enjoy that.â She hesitated, not used to sharing personal information. âAnd I have a daughter. She means everything to me.âÂ

What little monsters children could be but, Apollo enjoyed their presence nonetheless. Their enthusiasm and curiosity for the world was refreshing when he constantly slept with one eye open. He almost ran forward to catch Cassie as she lept off his bed, a small chuckle of relief escaping his lips as her mother caught her. âYouâre fine.â He smirked when her daughter disobeyed orders and asked for the profane words. He looked up to Allie before shaking his head. âYour mom said ânoâ so my lips are sealed tight.â
Cassieâs happiness always put Allie at ease, watching as her daughter pouted at the man. Behind her, the relieved mother thanked him silently by mouthing the words. She wasnât particularly good with people, so she had half expected him to just start listing swears. The only man sheâd ever really spent time with on a personal level had been Johnnie. All others had been professional only.Â
âOkay.â Cassie decided. âI still like you anyway. Youâre funny. And you look like Flynn Rider.âÂ
At that, Allie had to laugh. âCassie loves Disney.â Realising she hadnât actually introduced herself, she almost facepalmed. âThatâs Cassie, if that wasnât clear enough. And Iâm Allie.âÂ
the adorable expressions of Dr Caitlin Snow as always glowing under the light ~ she could totally pull off as Hermione Granger in that outfit ;)

â i was talking more x-men, less mutated genes. â  he clarified, though he knew sheâd probably deduced that on her own.  â thatâs about where the comparison stops though.  iâd say weâre morally skewed into depravity more-so than the x-men ever were. â  he was pretty sure their kill count collectively â objectively â would be devastatingly high compared to any x-men related deaths over decades of comic book issues.  ââŚbut letâs not go there. â
â if i was an alien, iâd come to earth, see what we have to offer, and pack my shit back up and leave. â  jax had to admit.  â somehow i canât see aliens bending to the will of our conservative government, or arguing about whether or not alien lives matter. â  heâd seen that plot-line play out on super-girl;  he knew it wouldnât end well for anyone involved.  â besides, they probably have tech and medical advancements we couldnât even comprehend.  if they came down and looked for volunteers, i wouldnât HESITATE. â  he admitted.  â probing or not.  if they offer, you have to say yes.  itâs your scientific imperative. â  he also had no permanent attachments on earth.  there wouldnât be a family left behind to mourn him if he just disappeared one day.  something about that, weirdly enough, was reassuring.
jax didnât even notice her cheeks flush, already thinking about what might lay in store for them in the tower.  it was supposed to be what they needed; that was what eve had written in reality.  he supposed it just factored into what eve thought they needed, or what whatever deity that gave her powers thought they needed.  W H O  was the one deciding ?  that was a thought that was bound to give him a headache. he massaged his temples.  â only one way to find out. â he replied.  â câmon, letâs check it out. â
âOh, those are comics, right? Like this whole Tower is?â Allie had a world full of popular culture to catch up on, having spent her childhood only reading classics. Glancing over at him, face screwed up comically, she felt a tiny bit offended he thought all of them were morally skewed. She was a sensible, hardworking single mom. That had accidentally killed her husband by pushing the boundaries of her powers. âSpeak for yourself. Iâve never indulged in depravity of any kind. Just scientific curiosity.âÂ
She considered her options carefully, since that scientific curiosity would make it difficult to say what sheâd do if aliens came to earth. âNo, I still think Iâd rather not be probed. Sounds rather uncomfortable. But you can volunteer for that, and Iâll volunteer to work on something a touch more scientific than that. Imagine all that they could teach us.â Allie wouldnât let things like rules keep her from learning whatever she wanted to, she never had. âI certainly wouldnât expect them to care what the government says. They can barely agree on foreign policies, let alone extraterrestrial policies.âÂ
Allie hesitated one more time, before deciding to take him up on the offer to go inside now. âI really hope this place doesnât blow up too.â She muttered as she walked inside the Tower, jolting when a voice greeted them out of nowhere.
âMs Bray, Mr Coyne. Welcome to the Tower.âÂ

âWind is the easiest?â Ronan asked, suddenly much more curious than he was before. He assumed that meant that she could do more than wind-related things, but then againâ itâs not like he really knew how any of this worked to begin with. He was just making inferences. âSo, does that mean you can do other things besides manipulate the wind? And, a tiny tornado that fits in your hand sounds like the most adorable thing Iâve ever heard of,â
Slightly caught up in the excitement of actually being able to talk about this, she let herself forget that he was a normal person. âWell, theyâre all easy to a certain extent. By ease, I mean that thereâs very little preparation required. Fire, that one means lighting a fire. Not the most practical.â Realising she hadnât exactly explained her powers, she tried to find the best way to say it. She flat out refused to sum it up as elemental manipulation. âI can manipulate things at a molecular level. Wind, fire, water, earth.âÂ
griddyshazel
A small smile grew across Hazelâs face as she spoke. He honestly wished he could be that optimistic again. Even for just a day, just to find the light in being single and finding himself once again trapped in this place.
But it was very hard. Since heâd gone back to a point before the apocalypse, everyone there except maybe Five still saw him as the bad guy. But finding Five was turning out to be one of the hardest things imaginable. âWhat if youâve got nothing?â He asked. Knowing full well that he literally had nothing. Not even a briefcase to go back to his old life, or the commission around to go back to.
Allie didnât consider herself particularly optimistic. Sure, she found the good in life, but it took hard work. As far as she was concerned, anything could be achieved with enough determination. âThen you find something. Good things donât fall into your lap, you have to find them yourself. It doesnât have to be much, but I believe that everyone must have at least one good thing in their life. Sometimes it takes a little while to find it, thatâs all.âÂ

Apollo softened his expression at the sight of a child, chuckling as she claimed the word âcrapâ to be a bad word. âMommy says âcrapâ is a bad word?â He spoke to the child in the Cinderella dress, a devilish smirk spread across his lips as he eyed her mother on the side. âThere are a lot of worse words out there. I can list them for you so you know not to say them,â he said jokingly with a wink. He had a soft spot for children even though he had none himself. It was simply fun to see their parents deal with the mess heâd make with their kids. Like teaching kids how to curse.Â
Allieâs eyes went wide as the man teased her. âNo.â Even as she said it, Cassie was getting to her feet and jumping on the bed, begging him to tell her all the naughty words. âCassie, what have I said about jumping on the bed?âÂ
The little girl simply leaped off the bed with a cry of âCatch me!â. Of course, Allie did, using her powers to lower Cassie to the ground safely.Â
âIâm so sorry. Cassie, say sorry to the man.âÂ
Soberly, Cassie walked over to him, hands clasped as she looked up at him, and Allie let out a sigh of relief. Until her daughter spoke.Â
âWhat are the bad words?âÂ
griddyshazel
The sudden pause was a bit odd. But understandable. Hazel was a stranger to her after all, and she had no idea what his intentions could be.
âSometimes happiness is just unattainable. Sometimes youâre only lucky enough to experience it for a few monthâs before itâs taken away from you.â This of course was referring to Agnes and how they grew apart and she eventually left him. âIâm sorry. Iâm not trying to defend anyone, or choose sides.â
His words struck a chord with her. Sheâd been so happy with Johnnie, but their happiness hadnât lasted. But she still had Cassie, and for that, Allie would always be grateful. Her daughter was her life. âSometimes you have to make your happiness with what youâve got.â She pointed out, used to debates. She might not know how to have a normal conversation, but her mother had raised her to be able to argue any side of a debate. She just hated to argue.Â
