[stands in front of you small and politely, as if to verbally present a homework essay to you] this movie is interesting because I don't interpret it as being literally about school shootings. that's a lens you can read it through and I don't think that's wrong, but I feel like that's just a coat of paint over the themes being explored of losing yourself in fiction and that affecting your relationships à la "intense codependent friendship you had as a closeted teenager that ended in disaster" or whatever that "universal experience" people joke about is. and it's also clearly an autobiographical piece, right? not only is matt playing a version of himself (as he does) but the film kind of revolves around the emotional arc and downfall of that version of himself. it's interesting.
