BUMI (JINORA’S UNCLE): the most accurate representation of the uncle figure in the entire avatar franchise and perhaps all of media, bumi is obnoxiously obtrusive, ruins every scene he’s in with his heedless, wacky idiocy, and is entirely unnecessary to the mise en scène in a way that actively degrades the quality of the narrative as a whole. everyone would be better off if this man just disappeared, or better yet, had never been born at all. even though he is not an actively malicious figure, his unbearable stupidity coupled with his incessant need to be the loudest person in the room is itself immoral, and thus he causes harm to those around him simply by existing. while the entire show does suffer as a result of his presence, my commendations where it is due, as whoever wrote this man clearly understands the figure of the uncle with a canny insight — 100/10.

oh wow i didn’t even know that was happening… yeah that fucking sucks lmao. but i guess that’s exactly how they wanted ppl to react based on the movie they made, so if anything we seem to be outliers for recognizing it as the cynical marketing ploy it is, and not finding the shapes & lines oh so sexy, and therefore good..

and yes, lok is far more serialized on an episode to episode basis than atla is (although both narratives are linear, and I would argue that atla is ultimately more of a linear narrative than lok is, considering it follows a far more coherent, teleological narrative arc across three seasons. but I know what u meant lol). that said, I don’t think that’s inherently a problem, since there are plenty of ways to write a serialized tv show well. while the structure of lok is poorly done, I don’t think a show being 4 seasons of 13 episodes each, with a directly propulsive plot, is necessarily a flaw. atla is structured uniquely well as a quest narrative spanning three seasons, with each season encompassing its own coherent arc, while telling a focused overarching narrative with a well established and followed through telos from beginning to end. lok is structured very poorly by contrast, as each season is self-contained to the point that any attempt to gesture to a thematic & narrative throughline feels like a lazy afterthought rather than a conscious writing decision. it’s clear while watching lok that the writers had no real plan from one season to the next, and good storytelling (almost) always requires knowledge of the ending from the very beginning to make the narrative cohere thematically, especially in the kind of traditional quest narrative the avatar shows adhere to. while I wouldn’t even claim that the pacing and structure is lok’s biggest problem, it is certainly a glaring problem (one of many) in its writing that you could easily point to, especially in comparison to atla. I agree that if lok was more episodic in its structure, then its structural faults would feel far less glaring, but I do also think it would have been possible to write a more serialized tv show that works within its narrative context. ultimately, the problem with lok is that the writing is just straight up bad, and its structure and pacing is but one of many facets in which its writing is deeply, terribly flawed.

as for the seven havens thing, the name is really stupid, but also the whole thing looks stupid. having seen the trailer, i really hate the art style, it’s simultaneously visually overwhelming yet extremely bland?? it’s giving animated megalopolis lol. also just off the bat not a fan of the orientalist “desert music” (because you know how deserts are barren landscapes that suggest an apocalyptic cataclysm having occurred to have formed them in the first place? surely not a remotely habitable naturally occurring biome, least of all not inhabited by human beings). maybe the show will somehow prove me wrong by having stellar writing (lol. lmao even) but at least for me personally, if this show wasn’t tangentially related to atla, it wouldn’t even be a blip on my radar, and i doubt anyone else would care to watch it, either….. which is why it’s part of the avatar franchise and not an original project in the first place. 🫠

I feel like they’ve been doing this to atla since the beginning…. the live action movie came out in 2010, and had intended to be a trilogy. lok was announced soon after (like literally it was first announced less than a month after the live action movie saw a theatrical release). nick knew atla was a moneymaker at the time, and so they’ve been consistently milking it for all its worth, whether with toys, merch, terrible comics, live actions, sequels, video games, novelizations, etc etc. since the beginning. but then atla itself had a sort of revival during covid due to being put on american netflix in anticipation of their godawful live action series, so of course they quickly realized they could capitalize off its hype and bryke made a deal to start “avatar studios” and well. we all know how that’s going. …………sigh.
