​I think they met in the late 1980s. Given their respective statuses at the time, it really isn't surprising that they knew each other and were friendly.

Trump was one of the biggest businessmen in America and a massive fixture in pop culture at the time, while Michael was the biggest entertainer in the world. It was pretty normal for Michael to be in those high-profile circles, so their paths were bound to cross frequently.

​Because of this, I don't think it's entirely fair to view their friendship as a "red flag" This friendship began long before Trump’s political career and during a wildly different era.

Given how vastly different their beliefs were, I imagine Michael would have distanced himself had Trump’s current political views been aired back then.

​It's also only fair to note that Trump was one of the few high-profile figures who vocally and consistently defended Michael during the allegations in the 90s and 2000s.

Ultimately Michael does call him out in Money in the HIStory era, and that I think says enough. Also, trump as a politician/ dictator today is different from trump as a business gargoyle in the 80s and 90s. He actually used to be a Democrat. He just goes where there’s more gain for him.

There’s a difference between being cordial with a rich guy as a popstar turned international icon who has to keep a carefully controlled public image and being politically affiliated with what is now the worst person in the world.

Times were different in regards to trump, ‘friends’ is pushing it a little, and Michael’s situation is really nuanced.
