Why is it that everything that surrounds harry turns so fucking dramatic and toxic all the fucking time. Half the people yesterday were shouting that Olivia made a post about Florence and not harry and when she did all this drama started. And yeah her wordings were wrong don't know what the hell was she thinking but why do people make it Harry's fault? It's not directed at you but it's getting really tiring to see everyone hating on him. And it's not even about something he did or didn't do. Since when did Harry Styles became the villain of this world? So many shitty fuckfaces in the world and the guy gets hate for not being a misogynist.
I mean...is it Harry’s fault Olivia made that post? Probably not. I mean we literally can’t assume he didn’t okay it or she didn’t show him or ask him before it was sent. You can’t know.
People are frustrated with Harry because of what he’s currently representing, and I’ve said this many times, but I think that’s kind of fair.
He’s a white rich celebrity who sold covid shirts and went to a wedding and went to Italy twice and hasn’t worn masks several times. He’s a publicly pretty straight man, who actively makes money off of pride based merchandise and being positioned as ‘maybe queer and interesting’, but isn’t an activist. He’s a white man who posted BLM stuff but who primarily seems to hang out with white people and is doing a movie in 2021 that may or may not be copoganda.
Harry ‘became the villain of this world’ because...well...people like him are...actually kind of villainous in the eyes of many. Do you really expect working class people and front line workers to like a person who is acting like a covid exceptionalist? Do you really expect queer people to be super fond of someone who won’t make any statements to support the community but will sell pride t shirts? Do you really expect feminist women to be particularly interested in a white man who is being praised for not hating women? Do you really expect every person of colour to be okay with his film choices? Do you really expect the queer community to not be annoyed that he got defended for his Vogue shoot while trans women are being killed in the street?
I like Harry. I am a fan of him. But people in his broader fandom, including here, really lack perspective. In a world ravaged by a pandemic where the rich have actively left everyone behind, where white people didn’t listen to science and are now buying up a vaccine before third world countries can, where queerness has become cool and profitable while trans people are being attacked daily and their rights are challenged in court, people like Harry Styles are the villain.
Harry and Taylor and Kim and Shawn and Ed etc etc...they aren’t like us. We can like their little songs and dances and enjoy them as fans, but you cannot shame ordinary people for being utterly sick of celebrities right now, in this climate. They aren’t like us.
I suggest every single person who needs to defend Harry, or any millionaire celebrity, from pretty fair criticism, starts realising that having a fave celebrity is one thing, but it’s not the real world. We might love Harry Styles here, we might like his albums and his photoshoots and enjoy him for fun, but in the real world we are not the same. People are allowed to have real world feelings, without Harries of any variety telling them they have to bow down to a celebrity.
Do I like Harry? Yeah. Do I think he’s better than quite a few celebrities? Sure. Am I going to defend him when ordinary people point out things that are blatantly true, like that he’s praised for the bare minimum? No. My love for him does not extend to me compromising my values.
