     “I think - I think I’m just getting tired.”

He thought for a moment before deciding he could tell a half-lie. He’d tell her what he was feeling, but he didn’t plan to tell his team. “Okay…”

“Mom, I’ll always be your child, but I’m not a child anymore. Please don’t treat me like one. It makes me doubt myself.”

     “Okay.”

She leaned in to give him a hug. 

“I missed you too, Rita.”

He opened his arms hoping it was okay to hug her. 

     “C’mere.”

yeah. that’s fair. he should have given her a ring or at the very least a text. despite his time away, he was still… y'know. a kid. not the smartest one, either. even in a chill place like michigan things could get a bit dicey; it wasn’t like he could blend in with civilians or most of the animal life. any jerk could figure out where he was crashing by doing a google search for “beast boy sightings” or… whatever people were nicknaming him this month.

he says, looking up from his mug. she’s the last person he ever wants to scare or cause stress or disappoint or… make sad, somehow. she’d given him home and a family when he’d had none. given hope, love… safety, comfort, and understanding. all he wanted was to make her proud and, someday, give her everything she’d given him and so much more.

     “It’s alright, honey.”

She reaches over, laying a hand gently across his wrist.

      “I just want to know when you’re out late. Maybe where         you’re going. You’re older now, and you can take care of         yourself. But it’s a mother’s job to worry.”

Rita smiles and takes another sip of tea.
