ill lose it if essek is taller than 165cm you cannot convince me a man who invented a special floating spell to hover a few cm off the ground and wear absurdly long mantle didn’t do it bc he was insecure about being short even for a drow and his baby brother outgrew him too fast
it's been a while

Again, I just wanna point out Liam is a character growth genius the way he played Caleb.
I'm just comparing this earlier episode, where he's assessing magic items for the team, for the first time. And he's not really a team player right now. So when he finds out what the items do, he doesn't share that information with anyone, and he decides to keep it.
Obviously, people didn't like this, and when they protest and ask what it does, he says dismissive things like "It hurts people." or "It's too dangerous for you, so I'm keeping it."
And when Beau starts to argue that he doesn't get to so that; withhold information, and just keep shit for himself. They argue back and forth a bit, and Caleb just passive aggressively gives the glove to Fjord.
Which was also not the point Beau was trying to make. She just wanted Caleb to share what he knew, and allow them to decide as a group, who the item would benefit most. But Caleb just gives the glove to Fjord because he's assuming they don't care about being a team, and they just want to take the items for themselves.
So, with that in mind,
Remember that moment, much later, When Fjord lost his warlock abilities, and just became a regular guy again, without any magic, special abilities or powers. He feels helpless. He feels terrified. He feels like a liability and a burden on his friends.
And Caleb, of all people, quietly tells him to put on the glove, and see: he can still do magic, if he just holds onto this. This is Fjord's glove now. The very same glove.
And at that point, everyone else begins to go through their inventory, offering whatever magical items they can to Fjord, to support him and make him feel better, and show him he's not a burden, he's their friend, and they care about him, and they're more than willing to give up these items, to show him he matters more.
Caleb did that.
Fjord: That's my wife Jester, our boyfriend Caleb, and Caleb's husband Essek. Artangan: Ehhem. Fjord:…And my wife's personal god.

Inspired by a lovely comment imagining Frumpkin treating the chibi Esseks like naughty kittens. 🐱
Professor Caleb and the chibi Esseks.
RIP Jester Lavorre you would’ve loved scientology speedruns

Love that Molly's like. You freaks killed my monkeys and burned down my circus. Unfortunately I can see how absolutely fucked you all are and I NEED something to take care of so I dont have to think too hard about myself so congrats! You are my monkeys! You do not get a choice in this
The concept of Astrid and Eadwulf calling Essek slurs and lowkey hazing his ass in the lab only for him to get pseudo married to their ex third (that of course they’re still in love with) and live in a little cottage with him and adopt a few cats WHILE said third is actively their coworker at the very school they trauma bonded and fell in love in decades ago. AND THEN he shows up at Astrid’s side gig book store job and embarrasses the shit out of her with his interns, specifically being like “my partner, your ex, says hi. :).” Insane play by Essek Thelyss, king of being petty and never letting go of anything ever.

I love how deeply fucked up the aesthetics of the Blumendrei mission flashback are.
It's hands down the most colorful part of the episode. The three of them are flirting and bantering the whole dance. The character designs and voice performances are very "teenagers acting a bit older than they are". Dressing up to infiltrate, the clever key handoff, the synth-y spy music...It feels very much like a teenage spy movie. And then the mission really kicks in and the killing begins, and the colors slowly darken as the deaths get more and more gruesome, as you are reminded this is only a teenage spy movie to the three of them, and this is actually a story about children being molded into killers.
One thing I learned while researching child soldiers is that they remain children, and they are subtly encouraged to remain children in between the bouts of killing so that they stay manageable. Trent made the pain a bonding experience, the killing a fun little adventure. Keep them young, keep them dependent, keep them obedient. Father wants you to come home.

they have no idea they're gonna help each other heal from their trauma and live in a cottage with two cats and grow green beans together

I finally watched the M9 animated.
Why did they give my boy morals and a good relationship with his mom?
I'm fine with it, I'm just very confused.
Trent Ikithon is a Bad Researcher
No no, I think I am going to talk about it because it pisses me off personally
I’m a research technician and let me tell you the whole “research” scene in tm9a killed me. (Not because I think it was bad writing or done poorly. I think it absolutely served the narrative purpose of characterizing Trent, Essek, Astrid, and Eadwulf as well as giving us more plot information about the Beacon)
But like…Essek was right. You just killed a guy for nothing!! You’re not taking any notes! You have two perfectly capable research assistants right there and no one is writing anything down! Instead, they’re just clean up crew and subject transport. There are no qualitative notes being taken and no quantitative data being measured either! Do you have any demographic information for your subject? Would the relationship between a subject and a divine source influence the outcome of the experiment? Are you controlling for the way that you kill them? Does killing them with a magical weapon vs a non-magical weapon have an effect? Are you taking into account exhaustion from the researcher opening the beacon? Are you just trying to replicate the first experiment or are you going to change something to actually experiment instead of doing the DEFINITION OF INSANITY?! Are you even making sure that any of this is replicable? Where are your control trials? Or are you comparing what’s happening here to previous consecuted deaths? (Which I doubt there’s any actual research on)
“I am going to create an experiment that is so unethical” Yeah, to do so, you would have had to CREATE AN EXPERIMENT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!
Anyways, the funniest interpretation of this scene is that Essek was only horrified by Trent’s lack of well structured research protocols.
