How fortune would he be, if he truly had stumbled upon something so exciting? Why, his Liege would be positively thrilled.

"The honour is all mine, Miss Bartley." He took a sip of his own drink, finding it dull in comparison to what his King tended to serve; but then again, some would say Sleipnir was likely biased towards everything Barnabas did. He hardly thought it his fault that his Liege had excellent taste.

"I am quite aware, my Lady. One must be of high standing or have a favourable reputation to ever step foot upon these polished floors." Sleipnir did not think Amelia belonged to the former, so it had to be the latter. She likely had quite the reputation as a skilled performer.

"His Majesty unfortunately had more important business to attend to," he agreed, feigning sadness over this fact. Barnabas would not have bothered to show up even if he hadn't been busy. Why, his Liege rarely found anything exciting these days.

An unknown Eikon would surely change that.

"My Liege wished to show appreciation towards our dear host, which is why I am here. I am most honoured to attend in his stead," not a lie, though it was said more for the sake of keeping up appearances.

Finding himself bored with the current pace of things, Sleipnir decided to... provoke a reaction.

There was no doubt that he was attempting to do so with his comments. She felt a chill up her spine and a lump formed in her throat.

Keep it together, Amelia!

"'Tis a shame that his majesty could not grace us with his presence," she said, feigning disappointment. "However, I suppose it is understandable given the circumstances. All nations are involved in some sort of conflict, and 'tis no easy feat staying the Empire's forces with Bahamut on the front lines."

A feeble attempt to smooth some feathers, surely, but if she could remain on the commander's good side, she prayed that he wouldn't see her as a threat.

Not that it mattered in the end - it was him she needed to worry about more.

The bard tilted her head slightly, perking an eyebrow. "Indeed, it would cause quite a ruckus," she replied, choosing her words carefully while focusing her eyes on him. "Just imagine the scandal... An unmarked bearer present at such an event would no doubt be troublesome for all involved."

She wasn't about to ruin her carefully curated reputation on the whim of Odin's servant, but if it had to be done to protect herself, then so be it.

He offered a bow, though he did not bend down fully. The only one he would give a proper bow was his Liege. Even so, it would not do not to offer a courtesy.

In some cases he would find it necessary to hide his position, but in other cases his connection to Waloed could offer valuable insight into who he was talking with. Most people knew of Barnabas' fearsome reputation, but most also knew that they had nothing to fear from the King unless they were in direct opposition to him.

If she showed any hint of fear or wariness, Sleipnir would make sure to take notice.

That would explain the ping of aether... He is one of Odin's servants.

"You honor me with your presence, Lord Commander," she said, offering a curtsey in return as was formal. "Amelia Bartley, at your service."

One of the perks of people tending to look the other way when they see her was that she was able to watching and learn the proper etiquette of high society - what titles to use, how low to bow, and so on. It only made it all the more easier to blend in, especially when they have no idea of her true origin.

She took a moment to sip her drink in order to regain her composure.

"I often perform at many events, my lord, but there is always something so quaint about lavish balls such as these. Not just anyone receives an invitation, you know."

Quaint, indeed, for there was no shortage of juicy gossip and scandalous secrets just waiting to be plucked from the crowd.
