ramblin’ blues - a tlou au fic by ehefic
Dina wet her lips and looked away, then pinned Ellie with those eyes again.
“Can… can I come with you?”
10/? chapters; Dina/Ellie roadtrip au
Ellie spent all winter in the truck on her own, eating up road, putting distance between her and the danger nipping at her heels. Then, in a dusty corner of New Mexico, fate turned her check engine light on and she met Dina.
Dina wet her lips and looked away, then pinned Ellie with those eyes again.
“Can… can I come with you?”
Ramblin’ Blues -- Complete -- 17 Chapters
It was a good day for it, the sky clear and blue, the sun highlighting the deep green of the trees, the froth of the waterfall so white it almost hurt to look at.
“Never gets old,” Dina said softly from beside her.
-- Ramblin’ Blues, Chapter 14
“Honestly, I’d kind of given up on stuff like this,” she said softly. “I was starting to think it was impossible just to leave Eugene’s. I already gave up on…”
She trailed off and gestured at the open plains.
“Waterfalls?” Ellie offered.
Dina blinked at her, then smiled. “Yeah. Waterfalls.”
-- Ramblin’ Blues, Chapter 13

no one asked for this but i rendered it out more anyway (until i was like, “…why am i doing this?”) still. it looks nice
Dina looked at her. “Do you think we still would’ve gotten together, if we met… earlier? Some other way?”
Ellie slid her eyes over. “I dunno. Have we gotten together, now?”
“I kind of thought you said we did.”
-- Ramblin’ Blues, chapter 12
if you want your female characters to both have agency in the story and be complex human individuals then sometimes bad things have to be their fault
There’s a baby.
Her shoes are still damp with salt water, the soles filled with grit and sand. Her mangled hand, twisted hastily up in the hem of her shirt, held tight against her body—it’s still bleeding. Won’t stop. Her whole arm shakes.
But she’s not worried about that right now. She’s worried about the baby. The one she can hear crying, somewhere in the distance. She keeps pushing forward, one foot after the other, but the sound never gets closer.
“I’ll get him,” She mumbles into the hot California afternoon, through lips so chapped she can hardly feel them, “It’s my turn.”
“It’s okay,” Dina says, and she puts a hand on Ellie’s seizing, injured arm, “Go back to sleep. You had a hard day. Get some rest.”
“No,” Ellie barks it out in a rough, dry voice, “I’m fine. Let me get him.”
“Your hand is infected,” Dina says, keeping pace beside her, “It’s fucked up.”
“It’s fine,” Ellie says, and she can’t look right at Dina, because the sun is searing her eyes but if she looks away, if she tries to really see the woman, she’s going to have to admit that she’s not real. That Dina’s not there. That she’s alone.
And losing her fucking mind.
“This is bad, Ellie,” Dina says gently, and she sounds too young, like she did when Ellie first got to Jackson, when she was just a pushy show off who used to annoy Ellie—until she didn’t. Until, slowly, inch by inch—Ellie couldn’t live without her.
“Been through worse,” Ellie rasps.
But her arm has stopped hurting, and instead of being relieved, it only makes her more afraid.
“I don’t know,” Dina says it quietly, “This is really bad, Ellie.”
The toe of Ellie’s shoe catches in a rift of the asphalt and she stumbles, knees jamming against the hot street, and she just really, really wants to lay down for a minute.
Someone is screaming, from far away, so far away—from underwater. Just a sound of bubbles bursting against the surface of the waves and it’s her, Abby, screaming for mercy, for clemency, for life. But all Ellie wants to do is hold her under.
“Why?” Dina asks, sitting cross-legged on the asphalt next to her, “Why’d you let her go?”
Ellie can’t feel her arm. She’s so cold, all in an instant. She sits back against her heels, looks out along the long, barren stretch of road toward home, tries to find the words to explain. Her throat feels too tight.
“I don’t wanna lose you,” She says, just a ragged, barren whisper.
There’s quiet, nothing but the sound of a dry breeze in the palm leaves, and the distant, sleepy cry of that baby. Ellie’s head hurts. Everything hurts.
“Good,” Dina says.
Good.
And it’s not much.
But it’s enough.
Ellie drags herself to her feet.
each time ellie asks her to help with the door dina does it with out much fight. each time dina opens a door she finds ellie, darker and darker still. hands quaking covered in blood. eyes haunted by ghosts only she can see. each time dina opens the door she finds ellie a stranger, a former shell. each time she lets her in. it’s when ellie walks through the door of her own accord with out dina’s help that dina finally lets her go. has to because she can’t keep opening doors without hurting herself.

River North was all about street art. They quickly discovered that most of the murals were tucked in the system of alleyways, each one harboring secret worlds of color full of stories bleeding one into another. Some were separated by rusted back doors or gated dumpsters; others rubbed elbows closely with their neighbors, distinguishable only by differences of style and composition, a loud chorus of many voices.
“This is so fucking cool,” Ellie said eventually, finally finding her voice after a full block gaping in silence.
When she turned, Dina had Ellie’s old phone, clearly taking a photo of Ellie and the murals behind her. Ellie lifted a hand to block her face. “Hey!”
From the edge of the universe ✅
It’s over, it’s done.
That’s right folks. As of today, From the edge of the universe is officially complete!
I am a product of my generation, and I say that shamelessly. So, I can think of no better way to capture the experience of writing this fic than with some sweet, sweet memes.
Behold: the From the edge of the universe alignment chart
I am also a big ol’ nerd, so I couldn’t resist graphing the word count for each chapter. Judging by the blowout for the last two chapters, I didn’t want this experience to end either. Anyone remember the days when I thought this would be a 30k fic? hahahahahaahahahahahaha
ANYWAY
If you’ve been following the story with me until this point (which btw, I honestly cannot thank you enough), the final chapter is here.
Or, if you’re one of those folks that filters Ao3 by completed works only — totally understandable, I know the heartbreak of reading unfinished fics all too well — you can now confidently start from the beginning and enjoy!
got a comment on ramblin’ blues asking why i decided to erase dina’s bisexuality? then they deleted it before i could respond?
hopefully they realized their mistake, but just to be clear, dina is very much still portrayed as bi in ramblin’ blues. she explicitly has mostly had involvements with men except for one other girl and then ellie.
me, closing document: this is awful and pointless
random commenter on ao3: this made me smile (:
me, opening document: guess i’ll write 50k more

Dina + ponytail
You know what I love about this?
Not just Ellie beaming at Dina
Dina staring at Ellie dazed and slack-jawed after their kiss. Definitely a life-altering kiss by Dina’s standards!
