tl;dr: telling us offscreen that mel is ace or langdon is happily married is not the representation they seem to think it is, but them getting together would be!!!

the specific ways that the pitt cast talks about/seems resistant to kingdon makes me feel like they aren't thinking deeply about what representation actually means on a show with the format of the pitt. we are only getting teeny tiny snippets of their lives, albeit snippets that are obviously presented very intentionally so we can make inferences about larger things. i think @avocado-moon is the one who said it almost makes it like they're character sketches instead of full characters because so many things are left up to us to fill in (eg different interpretations of the birkin bag line from @queenofattolia).

it's true that those details can be presented in passing and still have a big impact (santos's scars come to mind), but what makes this show so strong is the actual relationships it shows on the freaking screen. the langdon/robby breakdown in s1 lands the way it does because it built within the show across the season—we weren't just told in passing that robby and langdon were close or something, we got so many hints/interactions to show it. or instead of just having abbott's letter left at the beginning of the shift, we actually see robby and abbott talking on the roof, which makes the later roof convo hit. for robby, at least, the most important relationships get meaningful screentime, and we see them grow/change/break within the season / from one season to the next. the annoyance many people (or so i see on here) felt about the shoehorning of duke for such big emotional moments this season illustrates this perfectly - why bring him in to develop our understanding of robby's headspace instead of having the complex relationships already existing on the show draw that out? it's so much less satisfying for a new character to do that!!

within that constraint, it is SO UNSATISFYING for us to see mel—who, on our screens, has been shown as soooo isolated over the course of two seasons/ten months—and langdon—whose character sketch has soooo many hints of this breaking/unhappy marriage—have their meaningful character arcs rely on things that are the passing details instead of what we see on our screen. like "langdon fixing his marriage shows that addiction doesn't mean divorce etc" - we don't know abby!!! why would i care that he's "fixed" things, completely off screen, with someone we don't know! or "mel is ace/aro and doesn't even think about romance" - as an ace person who desperately wants meaningful ace representation in media, this ain't it!!!! we can say that almost every single character on the pitt is ace and it won't affect canon, because the pitt is not a show where characters' sexualities are explored in detail! like i love that garcia and santos are queer, but we don't actually know (as far i understand) how they identify or anything about how that's affected their lives up 'til now - that's left for us to fill in off screen, but we can do that because they have an on-screen relationship. i love mel so dearly, and i will be sooo disappointed if they decide to commit to the ace/aro bit (which, btw, it really feels like some people involved are saying ace when they mean aro?) because it won't actually affect her on-story screen in the same kind of meaningful way that these weirdos being openly together would. because if they actually get together, we get to see that!!! we get to see them being happy! we get to see why langdon is happier now! we get to know that mel is being seen and accepted! and, as others have said, we don't get to see nerdy ND women get the hot guy often. that would be meaningful representation.

But as she stared at the diamond, an ache settled deep into her stomach. It wasn't all jealousy. It was a sense of displacement. For years, Mel had quietly convinced herself that she was doing fine, that her solitary and carefully curated life was what success looked like for her.

Mel jumped at the sound of the loud voice. A boy was standing just to her right, a giant grin on his face, and—was he talking to her? She stared at him, at his sweaty, floppy hair; at his lime-green t-shirt that read East McDowell Middle School in blocky white letters; at the weird dent in his chin. He was clearly a couple of years older than her, old enough that she was surprised he was talking to a girl at all, much less her.
