Claude Levi-Strauss, “The Elementary Structures of Kinship”

There is too much to see now that everything is visible, increasing the depletion of privacy, and in turn self-awareness. When there are too many visual stimuli, one tends to “see” nothing anything at all. One may be “looking”, these former and latter descriptors are very different in defining how one makes any meaning or subjective critique of visual culture as a whole. Since we tend to just look, have we forgotten how to question the visible? See/look, hear/listen - passive vs active understanding.

What does “qualify as art” actually mean? The statement implies there are “qualities” that make something inherently art, or not. Isn’t the idea, and/or form, of art supposed to be open-ended and undefinable? Or are these the exact nebulous terms to make sense of this qualifying dialectic?
