how much use are you expecting to get from Fort Strong?
I’m not actually sure. I guess it depends on how well it plays as a board when it’s finally done. I think it will also make a good display piece.
That said, it’s one of those projects where I’m trying to push myself as hard as possible to find out just what I can do and learn a bunch of new techniques, so for that alone it will be worth it.

Progress update on the Fort Strong build. Laying down the wooden floors which go through most of the rooms and halls. It’s a little slow going but I’m really loving the effect.
Back to the Commonwealth...
So in last night’s explorations of the Commonwealth Wastelands…
I forgot to update on here after the last play session where I stumbled across a Brotherhood of Steel Paladin fighting off waves of Feral Ghouls and came to his aide. My characters thinking being that this guy has massive armour and I want to be on his side rather than against him. I ran a few errands for him and his team before going on a joint op to the Arc-Jet facility where I ran into synths for the first time. I am not a fan of those creepy buggers! We killed so many and I looted so many that I quickly became over burdened with guns and junk and then found out that Dogmeat also has an encumbrance limit… I dropped as little as I could and then headed back to Sanctuary. I scrapped and upgraded as many guns as I could. I have a sweet 10mm now called Delilah, a decent hunting rifle that I’m a better shot with than VATS would lead me to believe and a double barrel shotgun called Rachel that are my three main guns, I need to find a back-up big gun that I can pull out against things like Super Mutants or the Stunted Yao Gui that I’ve started to run into… I’d have thought a 80+ damage shotgun would be enough but nope… Ammo though seems to be a real thing in this game! I need to drop some more points into the ammo scavenging perk as I’m constantly running short for my main guns!
It seems that I finished my last run by returning to the Brotherhood at the Cambridge and joining up with them.
Anyway, last night. I load up my last save and I’m in the Cambridge Police Station. I head out towards Graygarden where I met Supervisor White. I don’t know if this is a thing in the game that impacts NPC interactions but my character always makes sure they holsters their weapon when they are meeting new people. I don’t tend to shoot first unless they are obviously hostile towards me. After chatting to Supervisor White I headed to the Weston Water treatment plant and tidy that up and get that up and running again. I ran into a Legendary Super Mutant outside and a Legendary Mirelurk on the inside. Also I got my hands on my first Rocket Launcher… I did not know they had those in this game! I couldn’t wait to see what mods I could add to that back at Sanctuary! I report back to Graygarden and that’s the third settlement that has signed up with me and my crew. So I report back to Preston in Sanctuary and take up the mission to retake the Castle… Where’s that on the map…? Wow that’s a really long way away from anywhere I’ve explored so far… Ah well, I’ll do some wandering and get over there eventually… To that end I guess I should actually head to Diamond City finally. I find some more settlers who ask me to take out some raiders and stumble across Vault 81. But I was determined to get to Diamond City so I passed them by for now and I’ll return later. Shortly after finding Vault 81 I finally start to approach Boston…
It turns out, in Fallout 4 at least, I do not like Boston or the approach to Diamond City… After all that time in the wide open plains of the Commonwealth the buildings and alleys were too much. I felt claustrophobic and paranoid, what was I going to run into around the next corner. Enemies were getting tougher and my guns seemed to be getting less effective. I somehow ended up inside Parkview Apartment block found it to be filled with raiders and supermutants who were fighting each other and me. I eventually made it to the roof where there were 6 super mutants, a gun turret and a legendary super mutant… I am low on ammo at this point… A few well-placed frag grenades and some sweet head shots, not to mention a couple of deaths and reloads, saw me through that encounter. I dropped back to street level, made a bee line for Diamond City, met Piper found Nick Valentines agency and had a quick wander around. I got lost and a bit overwhelmed, I don’t like Diamond City… I like the outdoors and the wilds… Accepting the quest to track down Nick levelled me up to lv14. I dropped a perk point in strength so that I could carry more junk and/or a bigger gun. Hit save and logged off for the night. I’ll head off to find Nick eventually but I’m going to explore the wilds around Diamond City for a bit. Maybe work my way over towards the castle. I might drop some time into tracking down some more bobble heads but I’m loath to start using a map, preferring instead to just wander around and find things for myself.
Any recommendations for must have go to guns for taking down Super Mutants and the bigger nasties in the wilds? Oh and I also don’t like what this game has done to power armour. I never use the suits I’ve found. It’s the old problem of saving a powerful item for that one time you’ll really need it…
I’ll update you on the Lone Survivors journey next time I get into the game.

The trick with guns is to specialise in one type and diversify in ammo types. The three main gun types being pistols, automatic rifles and semi-automatic rifles. Pick one or two of those perks to put the points into then make sure you have two or three of that type of weapon on you that use different ammo types. Semi-automatics are a solid choice because you can have a shotgun up close, sniper rifle for long range and a laser rifle as an all rounder. A pistol is light enough to have as a backup and for killing the likes of radroaches which aren’t worth wasting your better ammo on.
As far as power armour is concerned you will quite quickly end up with an abundance of power cores and each one lasts a pretty decent length of time if you’re not sprinting everywhere, so don’t feel like you have to hold out on using it.

okay how long did it take you to do this and what’re the materials like cost wise because I’m Loving It
It’s made from foamboard which is cheap, sturdy and very easy to work with. It’s often used by artists as mounting board so it should be easy to find in art and craft shops. I got four 5mm thick A2 sheets for about £12 which I used to build up the base, and 15 3mm thick A3 sheets for £10 on ebay which I am using for the walls. So far I’ve only put a few hours into the build.

Here is where I’m up to tonight with the Fort Strong build. I have the floor level raised up a bit and have got the main walls for the lobby and one wing of the building in place. The plaster walls are easy but texturing the brick walls slows those parts down a bit. The other wing could very well take a couple of nights because it has a lot more exposed brick.
In related news, this project was well timed because Modiphius announced a terrain building competition while I was in the planning and research stage. There are categories for single terrain pieces and full boards, and I think this would qualify for the latter. The prize for the full board is $500 to spend on their stuff, and the deadline is the end of the year. If ever I need a little bit of motivation to keep on building, that will surely do the trick!
Terrain pro-tip: For a brick effect, use a brick-stamping tool on foam. This tool is simply a brush with the bristles removed, and the ferrule bent into a rectangle with a small pair of pliers. Doesn’t need to be a perfect rectangle, in fact it probably looks better if it’s not.
In my case, I’m using it on foamboard with one of the card layers peeled off.
It’s taken a couple of days of research and planning, but I’ve finally broken ground on the Fort Strong Armoury terrain build. The location mainly features in the Brotherhood of Steel quest Show No Mercy, pitting them against the Super Mutants. A fitting piece for the game of Fallout Wasteland Warfare’s current state as these are the two most filled out factions at present.
Having access to the modding tools makes this project considerably easier. Bethesda works to a consistent scale with all their in-game assets so it becomes quite simple to convert that into measurements for the tabletop game. I’ve done this already on a small scale with some scatter terrain, and as you can see above I have managed to plot the basic layout of the ground floor of the armoury.
The only slight hitch is that Bethesda does not use a consistent scale with their interior and exterior areas - every building with a separate interior is basically the TARDIS. In this case the inside is about 1.3-ish times as large as the outside so it won’t be too noticeable.
The next step for me is to start the “landscaping”, so to speak. There are some slight variations in the floor level on the ground floor (such as the lobby and the auditorium. Along with that I will be getting the basic layout of the walls in place.
I went up to see my folks today and my brother and I battered through the five tutorial scenarios for Fallout: Wasteland Warfare. I played Super Mutants and he played Survivors.
I short, it was a tremendous amount of fun. Each scenario adds another layer to the game so it starts of pretty simple but by the end it’s full of that quirky Fallouty chaos.
One thing I particularly liked was how creative the tutorial objectives were. I think it was only two of the five where we both had the same objective and neither of those were kill everything. In fact a slight misunderstanding of the creature card rules led to a Deathclaw being on the table in scenario 3 (I missed the small creature deck and thought it referred to picking a random creature unit card - only creature in the starter is the Deathclaw). It ended up tearing through most of the Survivors meaning that there were too few of them left alive for me to capture enough to win, but the remnants just managed to squeeze out a win on their own objective.
The last mission was also an absolute riot. Both sides get all the toys and have to race across the board, closely followed by the Deathclaw. There’s a few objective pieces scatter around that let you push the Deathclaw a short distance in certain directions, but come it’s activation it will chase down (and generally destroy) the nearest unit. Unfortunately it tore through my lines that time and gave my brother the victory (seriously, it basically took on my entire force solo), but I’m just happy my leader managed to survive the last two turns of the game in close combat with the beast.
Aside from that, the deadliest model in the starter set has to be Dogmeat. Especially on the charge.
So looking ahead, I want to put together a set of terrain for Fort Strong, starting with the ruined houses and then doing the fort itself as two parts - the main building with a ruined interior, then the basement level as a kind of modular dungeon set.
Once that’s done and my starter models are painted I’ll be looking to expand with a Brotherhood of Steel core box, a Creatures core box and the Minutemen Posse, to add some extra faction options. Then expand with the extras bit by bit. I imagine the second wave of releases will be with us by the time I get all that done.
I’ve had a productive few days here. Put together some scatter terrain for Fallout Wasteland Warfare, and also made a few Nuke Cola caps. I’m very happy with how they came out.
The tricky part now is deciding where to start with larger terrain pieces for the game. I kind of want to do terrain in stages themed around the various factions. Since Botherhood of Steel, Super Mutants and Survivors are the main three in the range so far, I’m leaning towards maybe doing Fort Strong as a starter.

War... war never changes.
Not dead, just not posting much!
I am however still working away on my new terrain collection. The latest addition is some clump foliage courtesy of Mel the Terrain Tutor’s tutorial. By the way, if you are at all interested in wargaming terrain you have to watch his videos. I’ve been in this hobby for 20 years and I’ve learned more from watching them than I have from all that time of dabbling in terrain. His D-Day board is absolutely breathtaking and by the end of that series you actually feel like you could make it - he is that good at explaining what he does.
Anyway, I’m really pleased with this first batch. I plan to change up the paint mix in future batches to get a bit of variety of shades on the go. From what I can tell the above would cost about 5 quid from a hobby supplier. The third picture shows what I’ve used from one block of foam to make that much foliage. I bought two of those foam blocks for 5 pounds. The savings from one block alone are easily going to cover the costs of the paint and even the blender.
Today in weird wargaming purchases: a blender and two yoga bricks.
Despite not posting much I have been working away in the background on my Chain of Command project. To the point where I actually have a few posts’ worth of stuff in various stages.
First is the set of drainage ditches. The first scenario in the campaign I’m building this all for calls for about 14-ish feet of the stuff cross-crossing the table. So I made about that much in straight pieces of various lengths, and then an assortment of corners and end pieces and stuff like that. There are three batches in various stages of completion as you can see. The final pic is the test piece I did a while ago, and the rest will look more or less like that when done.
Guess who clipped like a dozen sprues of munitorum terrain into a fuckload of bricks for scenic basing and terrain creation.
You don’t have to guess, actually, given the nature of this post.
My hand is a bit sore. :p
Pro tip if you ever need/want to do this again: get yourself a hand operated meat grinder like this:
You still need to trim the sprues into strips to feed them in, but it’s a lot quicker and easier to churn out the bricks. It also distresses them a bit so they have all kinds of chips and scratches and uneven ends.

I’ll tell you what though, it feels like fucking christmas
I did a bit less actual hobbying today because I figured I should probably find a better terrain workspace than my dining table.
My ex had wanted the above as a hobby desk of her own next to mine, but never ended up finishing it. So I threw it together as a dedicated terrain building area. I’m very pleased with it and now it allows me to build and texture and paint and dry things in far larger batches.
