my knowledge of zestiria lore + characterization of edna are based off the japanese version of the video game; that is my true canon since i don't like her characterization from the game's english localization. as such, my edna's personality might differ from what you are familiar with if you only played zestiria with english voices. if you are curious as to why i despise the english localization so much, i have this post here that you can read.
i am not a fan of its version of the story, so you won't be seeing me roleplay the anime adaptation on this blog either. that said, you do not need to know about the series to roleplay with me if you are not a tales or zestiria blog. i am happy to answer any questions you may have about zestiria lore! i don't play it as often as i do with zestiria, but i can also help answer questions about berseria since it's the prequel to zestiria.
however, due to edna's nature as a seraph, i do not follow first. the bare minimum that i require you to know is that she is a seraph. a seraph, by default, is not visible to ordinary humans unless you have high resonance ( natural affinity you're born with to let you perceive seraphim ). for practicality's sake, anyone i roleplay with can see her under an excuse of your muse a) mysteriously having high resonance, or b) not being 100% human——but please keep this in mind before following my blog because this will still affect our interactions overall, such as background human characters not being able to see her. by following this blog, i will assume you have read my rules, my bio page, and this pinned post. thank you very much! \(^ヮ^)/ 💛🌼

Today is National Brothers Day, and so, she is quietly sitting next to his grave again, staring at her boots.
He had wanted to toss them away——something about them being too frayed and tattered——but she had stubbornly insisted to take them instead; to claim them for herself, to give them a new purpose and home. They’re too big on you, he had sighed, then even adjusted them to fit her feet / that had been the first time she felt connected to him: the first time she tried on his big tattered boots. Onii-chan thought they looked weird on her, but he also never endeavored to stop her from wearing them, so it was a battle with a foregone conclusion from the start. Edna thinks he was being dumb, because how could he think it was 'weird' of his own sister to want a piece of him with her for whenever he goes off on one of his long trips? Now, he will never come back——but that's okay. These boots will remain with her forever and forever: these boots that Onii-chan thought looked weird on her, these boots that are reminders of him / and also the old glove he let her have, the hairband, the green ribbon, the pendant on her neck: many little pieces of his existence, all worn on her.
Happy Brothers Day, Onii-chan, she thinks, and she smiles a little, wiping away a tear. He always did say she was a crybaby, and it's no wonder why she hates sentimentality——but he knew her best and she was never good at hiding things whenever it involved him anyway. What matters the most right now is that they’re together again. Forever, this time.

When morning came, Mikleo stirred a little from his spot. However it was the lick from Pupbo and whining that got the water seraph to open his eyes. Rubbing his eyes with the back of his hand, Mikleo glanced around and saw that no one else was up. Except when he noticed Edna was missing.
Standing up, a stretch he then bent down to pick up Pupbo. Hearing some sounds from the kitchen it meant the owner was awake. But besides that, nothing else stirred. Looking Pupbo in the face he sighed. "Do you think I look presentable? Though I don't know why I would need to. It's just a silly dance."
That just got a confused head tilt from Pupbo at first before he barked. "Shh, shh. Okay lets go find Edna." Putting Pupbo down, they quietly slipped out and off they went. After walking around for abit, Mikleo was about to give up on finding Edna when Pupbo ran ahead barking happily. Quick to follow they soon came upon her and of course, some normin. "Here you are. So they." He pointed at the normin. "Are going to teach me to dance, the normin dance. This is only to stay between you and I got it. And Pupbo."
The normins, much to her pleasure, all happily agreed to play along with her plan when she explained the plan. The normin dance actually does not exist, merely being a joke Edna enjoys pulling out for the gullible people ( Meebo ), but the normins were all amused and felt happy enough to contribute anyway. They would make up the dance choreography while she’d make up a song for it——because you totally can’t have a dance worshiping normins without a cute song.
A little after when the sun starts rising up, she hears familiar barking noises while she’s coaching the normins back at where they first found Pupbo, behind the sanctuary. The normins all grin at Meebo when he arrives, happily vowing to never tell a soul upon his condition. ❝ I won’t tell anyone either, ❞ Edna adds, eyes twinkling. Heheheheh.
She instructs the normins to line up, then gestures at the center empty spot in between two normins, telling Meebo, ❝ You can stand there and then copy what they do. I even have a song prepared, but we can go without it this time. Only Pupbo is going to watch, so just time yourself, got it? Start! ❞
...Strange, Lady Edna doesn't sound worried at all about this. He figured she'd at least be a bit upset there was some weirdo camping out on her front door. But in a way it's a relief-- if she's not upset, then whoever or whatever it was hadn't bothered her. That meant his only concern is finding proof the problem's slain or slunk back into its hole.
Such is a Kresnik's work...
'It was folks from the inns I volunteer at.' Yes, plural. Rumors are okay as town gossip, but once they spread? They get twisted more and more till problems do arise. Thus, he's here. 'If it were just "Eek, floating bones!" I'd think it was just a prank. But I heard over and over a green gremlin was controlling them and it's better safe than sorry.'
'After all, if it wasn't hokey and you were in danger? You can't ask for help! (ᗒᗩᗕ) I had to be sure.' Cause yes, his duty's important. But a friend's safety is sacred and never to be dismissed cause it's a little inconvenient to check. 'Glad you're okay at least. (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶) Though sounds like the goblin'll be a hard find...' Again, such is his duty...
He volunteers at an inn? She has no time to demonstrate her mild surprise in favor of the exasperation she is starting to feel. His concern does make her feel a little guilty. Just a little. Onii-chan’s brows were always furrowed whenever she came home late, hence why Edna always told Sorey beforehand if she wandered somewhere alone during the journey, so it’s not like she doesn’t understand Ludger’s concern.
But still. She’s the earth seraph who helped Shepherd Sorey stop Lord of Calamity Kittybeard. It’ll take more than a ‘green gremlin’ to put her in any real danger. Actually, she is quite offended he thinks she’d go down that easily, so he deserves some mild retribution for it.
❝ A green gremlin? ❞ Would Ion find that amusing? Or would he feel offended that all of his work was only good enough to warrant nothing else more terrifyingly, ominous-sounding? ❝ I know there used to be giant ogres roaming around here when the malevolence was still rampant, but I don’t remember any gremlins. ❞
Well, she does know some ‘green goblins.’ Sorey had this really weird fascination with their goblin carts that Meebo never found amusing. She remembers Meebo complaining every single time they encountered a goblin. ❝ Hm … I used to see green goblins all the time when I was going with Sorey to the Wind Trial at the gorge. Who knows. Maybe some of them migrated here and started learning necromancy. They like riding their carts everywhere and being elusive, so I guess you have your work cut out for you. ❞
After a week after Edna's prank time with Ion, Ludger has since come to pay a visit yet again. Although unlike his usual visits, he's ditched the travel pack for nothing except his twin swords, a notepad, and a couple tomato cream puffs for snacks. And his expression is a stark departure from his uncompromising ray of sunshine attitude.
When Ludger reaches Lady Edna's side, he begins twirling his pen as he debates how to phrase the news. After a few moments, he decides to confront things head on.
'Lady Edna, I don't mean to worry you, but there's been rumors lately a necromancer hellion is haunting your home. Have you seen it at all? I'll take care of it so it doesn't bother you. Kresnik Family honor.'
From how solemn and grim he looks, she had been under an impression that he had witnessed something deeply tragic——but when she reads the notepad this time, she pauses; blinks and wonders how successful the prank was if even someone from the Kresnik Clan knows about it. Ion definitely went wild with the whole performance, but Edna didn’t know it had that much of an impact …
Then again, she thinks, humans will be humans.
And now that Ion had his fun, it’s Edna’s turn.
❝ Really? Who did you hear this from? Other humans outside of your clan don’t even know about hellions, ❞ she casually replies, her umbrella opened and held up. She lazily twirls it by the handle, maintaining nonchalance. ❝ I live here, so of course I’d know about it——but I don’t. However, if you’re so sure there might be one, then you’re free to take a look around, Lurin. It’s not often I see you with your Serious Mode on, after all. ❞
Lady Edna's advice pulls no punches, striking a weak point. All this big brother can do about it is sigh and come clean, "I suppose that's my problem-- the things I'm good for don't help with chores. But the big brother in me will never stop yearning to take care of everything. So while I know I should give up for good... I can't promise anything."
Is it a bad habit? Yes. Will many sheets be torn and plates destroyed in his efforts? Most certainly. And yet no amount of logic has changed his feelings after so many years. All to chase the vain hope that somehow, someday, he'll finally get it right. Although if Ludger ever told him to stop trying? He'd be a bad brother to ignore his wishes.
But so far, he hasn't yet. And Ludger's brief yet nonetheless warm look tells him he's not planning to.
"One layer would be cake, then pudding on top of the cake, and ice cream on top of the pudding. That way, hellions of any texture bias has a pick waiting for them," See, his joke still has some fight in it! And speaking of fight.... "As for who'd make them, I know another good chef who's not especially busy. He's rather touchy about strangers knowing his name, so that's all I can say." Any more might summon an angry Victor from under a rock.
His cockiness doesn't hold up long as his reaction is met with harsh, harsh punishment: a lecture, and a whopping -100 points. Which meant either he's at -10 points, or even worse, -90 points if his performance wasn't weighted to 90/100. All because he slipped and a joke seriously...
"I... suppose I can't complain for failing to recognize such an obvious joke...." Julius attempts to accept his defeat gracefully, yet he can't swallow the shame burning on his face. Meanwhile his mind is working overtime to piece together how he fixes this without acquiring more negatives.
Arguing? Terrible idea.
A joke? Risky given his ability to step on delicate subjects.
Begging for forgiveness? Can't ruin Ludger's image of him.
That left the final option: a simple, direct question. It should be fine. Surely.
"Is there no way I can regain my points to put myself back in the positive numbers? Leaving things on such a negative foot feels like bad manners."
‘Things he’s good for don’t help with chores’? She’s not even going to venture further, knowing that he is quite the enigma.
❝ I’ve never such courteous service towards hellions before, ❞ she flatly remarks, still unimpressed. As if the hellions would actually care, but she’s pretty sure he knows that too. ❝ Why would he get touchy over that? ❞ That person sounds like another weirdo. In fact, the entire Kresnik Clan seems eccentric, to put it lightly. Not really in a bad way; she acknowledges the sense of humor, even if some of them are a little slow on the uptake.
Case in point: ❝ Mhm. Yes, you should repent for it. Failure to distinguish jokes is a transgression upon the laws of comedy. ❞
Ordinarily, the role of the funny person is her while the tsukkomi role belongs to Meebo, and Dezel on occasions back when he was still around——but when she’s with Lailah, the roles reverse and Edna is forced to maintain balance in the comedy realm by being the reluctant tsukkomi. She is unsure of which role to perform with Julippy, honestly. The manservant bit just now proves that he makes a terrible tsukkomi to her boke, and a successful comedy routine cannot function with two boke people. Tsk.
When he asks how to regain his points, she squints at him and ponders. Given his attitude thus far, he could very easily spin some sort of joke out of this to try saving face, but it seems that he’s playing safe this time. At least the concept of bad manners is not lost on him. ❝ You can start by working on your comedy skills. Try coming up with a routine that will impress me with your comedic timing. Feel free to partner up with Lurin if you want. ❞
She was originally going to get him to make another dessert, but decidedly changes it. If his crime has broken the laws of comedy, then he ought to mend it. How he was able to easily keep up the complex Big Brother Code gag but fail with the simple manservant bit is beyond her.
Mikleo THANKS whatever deity is willing to listen that Edna's proficiency with the sharper, much more THREATENING version of his OWN element is limited only to that gaze of hers. He freezes in place and shivers something FIERCE, sure to have shattered to pieces had he been nudged over and left to fall.
" Jeeze, I g-get it! Alright! " It feels like a scolding from Gramps, just WITHOUT the painful round of smacks to the head with a wooden cane--- Edna's trusty parasol, though, is a close second when it comes to how LITTLE he enjoys being assaulted with it, but he's fortunate enough he hadn't tested her nerves enough to lead her to BRANDISH it... yet.
--- or, she can just substitute it for a punishment that would hurt his PRIDE more than his actual body. Frighteningly strategic, bratty, mean, scary, no good--- " You cannot be serious. NEITHER of those options is an appropriate form of RETRIBUTION for the offense! I'm NOT doing it! "
His swivels on his heel, turns his back to her, and folds his arms resolutely over his chest. That'll show her.
Seriously? She squints when he actually turns around, his back to her, his arms crossed, as if he is done with the world ( her, she knows ). He really is such a boy … A boy throwing some sort of tantrum and being a stick in the mud.
Edna shakes her head, knowing that things will only escalate from her annoyed mood and his … whatever tantrum he’s doing. She meant to simply to mess around with him as usual, but those words he described her with earlier destroyed all semblance of harmless joking for her. If he wants to be such a stick in the mud, then she’ll let him get stuck in the mud forever. Maybe she’ll just go find Lailah or Rose to kill time with since some boys here are clearly still boys: insensitive and always putting their foot where their mouths are——
She is already walking to the door, calmly opening her umbrella. ❝ All right, fine. Seeing how Meebo is clearly so offended, Lady Edna will just invest her time into something else. ❞

˗ˏˋ ♰ ˎˊ˗ She's thankful that Edna didn't seem to mind or question her inabilities. She was used to the mere mention of em resulting in cancelation or any number of hurtful remarks. ❝There is a teacup ride that you can spin to go as fast as ya want, I always ride that one to see if I can make it go zoom!❞ and if that wasn't fun they could win a bunch of prizes and see lots of pretty sights.
From the way Mana perks up a little more genuinely, Edna gets the feeling that her lost sense of taste might’ve been a sensitive topic. Well, it’s honestly not in her place to ask about it, nor is she a meddler ( that’s Sorey’s job ), so Mana will talk about it if she wants to. Edna is more of a listener. ❝ Hm, okay. I’ll humor you. I prefer something fast anyway, so you can spin it all you want when we get there. I just want to see how fast we can ‘zoom.’ ❞ Not to mention, what does a giant teacup ride even look like? She has never seen one ...
at edna's mention about her big brother's weird taste in picking up gifts, a snort bubbled from her throat. she could remember when eizen had a rough time writing a letter and begrudgingly asked the daemon some help with words. boys were always shy and unsure about how they should convey their emotions. ❝ you know how men are. always full of pride and stubborn. ❞ her finger tapped her chin, reminiscing the time eizen insisted to go through some ruins for two whole days just to find the perfect gift. ❝ i think it was around loegres. your brother dragged us along to find some treasures, and we had to save him from stepping into traps. ❞
that, she can wholly agree with. the snort from velvet implies that she must’ve had her own fair shares of men trouble; certainly a topic fellow women would undoubtedly find kinship over. ❝ loegres … that’s pretty far away from here. you must’ve traveled everywhere by now. ❞ seeing the vast, vast world: an experience that she could probably never go through herself, but edna knows just how much onii-chan loves being free, going by his own creed, whatever that may be. perhaps his place in the world was meant to be out there instead of with her all along. now it’s her turn to snort, shaking her head. her dummy brother falling for traps. typical. ❝ does he know you’re here, by the way? don’t tell him you met me. i know he’s just going to worry again. well, he does that already, but you’d have to be the one to deal with it. ❞
Hellions. It was a first for him hearing of such beasts, but that would explain why he always felt such power when he visited. Was it radiating from hellions as she just mentioned. Ion certainly was learning new things each time he came for 'tea time' with Edna.
"Oh believe me, I will have such fun. And it would cure his own boredum. After all when was he last time he struck fear into the hearts of stupid humans. A long time he would wager. Since to most he simply looks like a sweet innocent young man, however that was just a false mask which concealed something more darker.
Continuing on his way down the path, Ion soon came upon a good pile of bones. "These will do. Oh and by all means you are more than welcome to take on a secondary role. We'll give them a show they will not forget. Now, let us begin." Holding a hand out, his eyes closing and a glow beginning to surround his body. Ion began the spell to make the bones awaken.
Once he was done, Ion staggered a little but he was pleased with the results. "There. I think I used a little much, but this will suffice. Now we just need some humans to come."
Heh. She likes Ion. He knows how to have fun in a way that wouldn’t bore her with geeky talk over ruins, which was the norm she had to put up with. Edna watches him work, seeing him glow as he casts some sort of arte on the pile of bones. She watches the bones rattle and jangle, mildly impressed. Yeah, a random human might get spooked by this.
❝ It’s rare of them to come, but when they do, they’re usually here to place their offerings on the shrine and pray. Surely you must’ve passed by a shrine on the way up here. ❞ It’s definitely hard to miss since there’s only one path leading up to where she is. This mountain is the largest one in the area, but there actually aren’t that many pathways on it either. Some eroded away when the land naturally shifted and changed, making it quite barren.
She turns around to lead him to the shrine, expecting him to follow. ❝ We could wait for them there. Just don’t get bored from waiting. This isn’t exactly a place where humans are excited to go to, you know. ❞
Due to its association with seraphim, the shrine on this mountain eventually became a substitute grave for those who perished in the war between Hyland and Rolance a while back and couldn’t be properly buried. People believed the seraphim would ‘bless’ those people and blah, blah, blah. She won’t bore Ion with those details.
As much as Ludger'd like to argue Lady Edna's view on Wind Seraphim... he can see her point. The few Wind Seraphim he's known always had some quirk to them. Muzét just magnifies the weirdness into an art form. So... sorry Wind Seraphim of the world, but he's going to nod along.
--Although part of that might be the sleepiness hitting as he's trying to keep his head upright. Which his body's quick to agree when another yawn escapes his mouth. Good thing he got Lady Edna's blessing to go to bed because he'd last maybe another hour tops.
A full night's worth of sleep, here he comes!
The cave Lady Edna guides him to is as she promised: roofed and completely hellion-free. There's enough smooth patches that he should be able to dust away any pointy pebbles for a mostly comfortable sleeping experience. And residing in the home of a powerful Seraph like Edna, he's confident he doesn't need to sleep with one eye open lest he be a corpse in the morning.
'I can work with this. Thanks again for letting me stay!' Ludger is sure to bow as he presents his message.
Now for getting to bed. From his always faithful travel bag comes out a fluffy mat sewn by his own hands. Tiny pebbles are swatted away so he can lie it as flat as possible with no risk of surprise pokes. Next out comes a nice blanket he usually used for picnics, but it doubles as a top layer. And as for the pillow? His bag is packed so if he lays down on the bottom left corner, it's cushy enough without ruining anything.
And thus, once he's snug as a bug, Day 2 of his Shepherd's Seraphim Appreciation Tour ends. . . .
At about the midpoint of sunrise, Ludger finds himself still in one piece as he awakens. Despite the rough terrain underneath, his body had no issues unwinding for the night. And thus his energy levels for the day were near if not 100% full and ready to find the wandering Lord Mikleo and Lord Zavied! Though before he leaves, he did want to ask Lady Edna one thing. Is she--
Oh, she's actually right outside! A personal send off from a nice lady and the world co-savior is a flattery he doesn't deserve. And also one he'll treasure for years to come.
'Flattered you'd come to see me off. (。≖ˇ∀ˇ≖。) Makes me feel important.' The little face he drew at the end matches his own perfectly, blush and all. 'Did want to ask before I left: would you mind if I visited you again in the future? Maybe with Nii-san if he wants to say hi too? However you answer, it was nonetheless wonderful meeting and spending time with you!'
Being a seraph, of course, Edna didn’t even sleep, preferring to stay up and watch over the mountain as usual. Being a proper hostess is part of it, but it’s merely natural for her to keep an eye on her beloved home, especially when there’s company today. Ludger has proven himself a dork and certified master chef, greatly lowering the possibility of him desecrating Rayfalke behind her back, and so, she allows him the luxury of a full night’s rest in peace.
She’s already waiting near the cave before dawn even rises, staring at the horizon where the sun meets land. It’s a quiet and gentle start for the day as she watches him come greet her——
Until she reads the first message on the notepad. ❝ Better remember that feeling, because it’s a privilege a human like you will rarely get, ❞ she flatly says, unamused. He even drew a weird little face on it. Dork.
Edna considers the next message. It would be quite impolite to deny him such a simple thing for all he’s done. She wonders how his visit with Lailah turned out, whether or not Lailah also had to share campfire stories or impart more terrible puns onto him. He might have a blast getting along with Grampveid and Meebo if he actually enjoyed that, so she hopes he will conveniently neglect to mention the shrimp fossil story should he ever somehow find Meebo. Meebo will certainly know it was her who brought it up, given that they were the only two seraphim members who were actually present to witness and participate in the discovery.
❝ Sure. Just don’t come empty-handed. ❞ ( She isn’t sure if the Nii-san in question will be as easily welcomed, though. ) The earnest gratitude makes her lower the umbrella just enough to shield her face, then she grumbles, ❝ All right, I saw you off, so get going already. If you’re too slow, then you’ll be an old man by the time you find Meebo and Zaveid, dummy. ❞
But most of all, she’s just glad he didn’t have any intentions to rob or desecrate this place. Maybe Onii-chan could’ve gotten along with him.
She won’t be walking him down the mountain, but when she turns her back to him, she adds, ❝ And thanks, I guess. For the marron glacé, I mean. Bye. ❞ If he pays attention while he’s descending the path, then he might notice that she’s standing close to the edge that lets her see him on his way back to the entrance. She won’t wave at him, but she’ll keep an eye on him until he’s officially gone out of sight.
i finished my zesty replay!!! i am still obsessed and stubbornly got all of my trophies 💛
anyway, i have compiled plenty of screenshots and meticulously translated a lot of the 'bitchy' edna dialogue that the EN localization makes her say, and placed them underneath the read more. this is a post to help establish the difference between how the EN localization's version of edna is portrayed versus the original JP version of edna, which is the true version of her that i write as. if there is anyone here who has never played z.estiria with JP audio, this is also a post to help you get a glimpse of how the original edna was written. i have spent the past few years going through the EN and JP game scripts and plucking out the most 'bitchiest' lines of dialogue that may have influenced western players to believe that edna is a 'heartless mean bitch,' and i have personally taken it upon myself to translate them more faithfully to the JP script.
my biggest reason for why i've been doing this as a side project for so long is so that people who only played z.estiria with EN audio + EN subs can stop butchering the characterization of the one character i deeply, deeply love; i also do not want to roleplay with anyone who has this impression that edna is genuinely a 'heartless mean bitch,' so this post is to also help you guys understand this: edna is not the hateful girl that the EN localization paints her out to be. she is, in truth, quite a neutral character. the only thing she genuinely hates are humans, and not even then does JP edna express as much hatred as EN edna does. let's start:
going through the EN script a few times, it's clear to me that EN edna has a few 'loud' traits going on for her:
especially hateful of anything in general
tends to say the meanest variation of an adjective that the JP script never made her say
rude remarks that were never in the JP script either
speaking about sensitive topics ( i.e. "slitting my wrists" or "kill me" ) very flippantly
cusses even though being a lady is thematically important to JP edna's character development; JP edna never cusses except for an occasional 'shimatta,' which could be a mild 'dammit' for its EN equivalent
using 'earth-dwellers' for humans even though she doesn't actually call them anything else in japanese
here's a compilation of EN edna being particularly hateful and extra for no reason:
as you can see between the game's localization and my translations, along with the JP script dialogue i even included, JP edna is a lot more neutral in everything she says. i understand her personality is not exactly happy and cheerful, but she is not a bitch either. JP edna is grumpy. grumpy =/= bitchy. the compilation i provided pretty much gives you two different vibes when you read the EN subtitles versus what i translated. JP edna will say something is troublesome or a pain, but that's as far as she complains. EN edna, however, will say all these rude remarks as if everything you do in the game is a huge waste of her time. like i said, grumpy =/= bitchy, but the vibes are very different between the EN subtitles and my translations due to the way we word things + vocabulary choice. in this case, vocabulary choice is extremely important because it does impact the vibe of her character to the audience. ( i.e. EN edna saying "naive simpleton" versus JP edna saying "grown-up kid" when describing s.orey, or EN edna saying "foul human" versus JP edna merely saying "human" with no adjective included )
EN edna saying "is there a school you go to to get that dumb?" to s.orey upon their first meeting is not a 'clever' way of expressing her hatred for humans. JP edna in her introduction simply tells him, "geez. are you stupid?" with nothing else extra added in. it's blunt, simple, straight to the point, and neutral: that's how edna talks normally. yes, she hates humans, but she hates them as a whole. she doesn't have anyone specific to hate. she just hates humans altogether with no one in mind because to her, they're all greedy and selfish and breed malevolence. and sure, saying "geez. are you stupid?" might be a little mean too, but she has valid reason to do so. s.orey ( + m.ikleo and l.ailah ) were literally about to get attacked by dragon e.izen! of course she'd think it's stupid for people to walk right up to a dragon, especially her brother!!! with the way "is there a school you go to to get that dumb?" is being worded, it does express the similar exasperation she felt, but at a much more hostile level due to how it's being worded. as i've mentioned earlier, word choice + vocabulary choice here really matters because they set the vibe of edna's character.
one of her solo victory quotes stands out the most to me for being the one quote that truly summarizes the point of this entire post. in fact, i will reattach it here separately because it is too accurate towards my point:
as you can see, EN edna says 'hate' twice while the JP script doesn't even mention hate anywhere. this is what i mean when i say that the EN localization paints edna in a very hateful way, turning her into a girl whose sole purpose is to seemingly ruin everyone's day with her cynicism. edna can be cynical at times, but it's mainly towards humans, and given her backstory with e.izen, she has valid reasons to feel that way. EN edna, though, it's like she's just ... hateful for no reason most of the time?
i feel quite certain that b.amco was probably aiming for a 'blonde, mean girl' stereotype, considering that EN edna provided at least two iconic meme dialogues in the game. ( i.e. "i'm the loveliest lady who ever ladied," and the "normincarena" term ) / and given that the game came out in 2015, i wouldn't be surprised if someone in b.amco staff was projecting their edgy self onto edna by making her say things like "kill me" when SHE DIDN'T SAY THAT IN THE ORIGINAL JAPANESE SCRIPT!!!!!!!!!!!!! just because she hates humans, it doesn't mean she hates life. that piece of dialogue doesn't even make sense at the point of the timeline it was being presented in either. she says the "kill me" dialogue when everyone is at tintagel ruins, but i have already proved that edna already starts seeing everyone as her FRIENDS as early as their first time going to marlind, which is not even a quarter into the main story. edna's character was ALREADY CHANGING FOR THE BETTER BEFORE SHE GOT TO TINTAGEL RUINS, so making her say edgy emo things was an extremely poor way of neglecting her personal growth imo.
another thing that particularly stood out to me was how she regards s.ymonne. s.ymonne is one of the game's antagonists, but in the grand scheme of things, the true main villain is and will always be h.eldalf——however, neither h.eldalf or s.ymonne personally did anything particularly awful to edna to warrant true hatred or resentment from her. to her, they are just people in the way of s.orey's journey as the shepherd, and yet, the EN localization has somehow made her single out s.ymonne with the mean EN-exclusive nicknames:
as you can see above, edna has always consistently called s.ymonne by 'fushigi-chan' in every single instance in japanese. every. single. instance. i don't know where or how the fuck the EN localization team got this crazy idea that edna should specifically hate s.ymonne since s.ymonne has absolutely nothing to do with edna's personal character arc, so this is just one of the more blatant reasons why you should play/watch z.estiria in japanese. it butchers edna's relationship with everyone, including even the villains, apparently.
she is especially nasty and straight-up antagonistic in the enemy book comments. i literally felt nothing but rage and frustration whenever i had to scroll through it to look up an enemy entry, because in my opinion, edna's character and personality are most butchered in the enemy book. the enemy book comments are not voiced at all, so if you have a copy of this game in the west, all you can read in the enemy book are her horrible EN comments, regardless if you play in EN or JP audio:
why does EN edna hate birds so much when she doesn't even say much about them in japanese? like, why is there a reason to explicitly make her express NONEXISTENT hatred for birds out of nowhere? probably to show the audience that she's a 'bitch' okay. do y'all get the gist yet of what EN localization is doing with her? 🥲💔🫠 imo, the worst offender in this list is her comment for scorpstar. in japanese, she says a very simple remark, but in english, she says it in the most obnoxious way possible, again, to be a bitch. she even says "it's not fun, stupid" EVEN THOUGH SHE DIDN'T SAY THAT IN JAPANESE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it's like the writers fucking forgot that edna is capable of kindness. e.izen, her own brother, specifically says that she's a crybaby with a strong heart, and that she's also empathetic:
思いやり can mean consideration, thoughtfulness, sympathy, compassion, feeling, kindness, understanding, regard, and kindheartedness. i decided to keep 'empathetic' for my own translation since 'empathetic' seems to encompass all of these words together into one.
they are all very positive traits that reveals the hidden kindness in edna, so it is very clear to me that e.izen knows she is a good person. he's the one character who knows her best canonically, he literally raised her; knowing what e.izen is like, i think some of his kindness and beliefs rubbed off on edna because he's also the biggest influence in her life. if he says that edna has it together even more than he does, then i trust his judgement. if even e.izen himself thinks she's more composed than he is, then that itself is already enough proof that there's more to her than what meets the eye: a heart of hidden kindness, kindness from a girl who is fueled by familial love.
this all leads up to me saying that my interpretation of edna will never be like how the EN localization portrays her. the core of edna's character has always been the theme of family imo / she loves her brother so much that it was all she had for a long, long time. i refuse to believe that someone who held onto love like that——held onto all of those memories and feelings, suffering by herself, sinking into loneliness deeper every day——for over 1000+ years would ever be the toxic and bitchy girl that the EN localization somehow created. it is blasphemy to me. i will never write that edna.
my edna is grumpy, empathetic, and kind in her own way. again, if you are someone who only played z.estiria with EN audio + EN subtitles, then my edna might be rather different from what you'd expect. i care about her feelings and want to explore them, so my edna will never endeavor to be mean for the sake of being mean. if she ever verbally says anything mean-sounding, then she has a reason for it. i want to write genuine connections, connections that feel real and are real. i just love edna a lot. she is genuinely, truly one of my most favorite fictional characters in the world for having all of these nuances to her character, and i want the best for her. there is only edna love under my roof, so thank you if you read this to the end 💛💛💛💛💛🌼🌼🌼🌼

this scene reiterates my point that e.izen needed to be out of the picture for edna to truly grow as a character. i love them very much, but for edna to stand out as a character on her own, to have individuality that is only for herself, she needed to be on her own. just as rose and s.orey said, it's okay for her to not feel the same as e.izen on her journey——because it's her journey. same world, different experiences: this is how you know that for someone who has lived for so long, she is still so new to the world, and with e.izen gone, she finally has the chance to see it.
she knew she was part of the reason why e.izen was suffering——her intentionally avoiding his death is what kept him alive, and the more he was alive, the more he lost his mind and became a full-fledged dragon who forgot even her 😔😢💔
