Backstory- Violet is from West Virginia and lived in a small town of only 2,000 people. Shepherdstown is the oldest town in West Virginia. The first settlement was recorded in 1730. Thomas Shepherd obtained a land grant in 1734 and was soon followed by other settlers. The town was originally named Mecklenburg in 1762, but then later changed to Shepherdstown in honor of its founder. Many of the first settlers were German and the town had a German School in the community as early as 1762. The main street in Shepherdstown is still to this day called German Street. Despite itβs German history Violet and her family are old stock Scots.
Her family lived on a decently sized farm on the outskirts of town. There her father Edward McElroy worked on growing crops. He mainly focused on grains above ground veggies like lettuce and corn. While he grew food Violetβs mother Lily McElroy kept watch of their animals. The animals Lily collected were all surrendered farm animals. Pigs about go be butchered, cows who canβt have anymore calves, abused emus, you name it. Much like Violet, Lily had a huge heart and couldnβt see these animals anything but spoiled rotten. Violet has an older brother, 15 years her senior who does anything and everything to help his parents run the farm. In due time it would be his anyhow.
What her brother Arthur didnβt know was just how quickly that would become a reality. As Violet was merely 5 years old and Arthur 20 their parents died in a car crash. They were coming home from a town hall and were sadly ran into by a drunk driver, killing the two instantly. Because of this Arthur got saddled early in life with fatherhood. He couldnβt have Violet go into foster care so the young man had to learn how to become a father and mother practically over night.
The accident did a number on young Violet. She couldnβt understand why her parents left her. Being so small Violet just assumed they left instead of dying. It was easier for her little mind to understand, but it was still difficult to understand that sheβd never see her parents again. Running the farm all by himself proved extremely difficult and Arthur had to hire farm hands just to make ends meet. At 6 Violet was put in charge of animals double, even triple her size. However it seemed as if no one had to worry. They listened to her and did as she instructed, even the old bull. Violet would tell them to eat, they ate. Sheβd say βgo to bedβ and they would.
Being busy with school and work from such a young age left Violet very little time to socialize. With that and being from a tiny town with few kids, Violetβs social skills never really formed. Being around groups of people terrified her well into her twenties. The blonde would much rather hang out with her donkey, Winston. In her teens Violet got a job at her local bakery to save up some money for the family which did help her at least learn to carry a conversation. The old ladies loved her and would often come in to discuss gardening or recipes.
Despite all the hardship God threw her way Violet enjoyed her quiet little life where everyday was the same. That was until news of some strange virus began circling around. People losing their minds, trying to bite others, not being able to talk. It all sounded like something out of a movie and Violet felt like the news was making things bigger than they were. That was until one Saturday afternoon one of the farm hands came into the barn actingβ¦ bizarre. He wouldnβt answer to his name anf he kept scratching at his neck rather viciously. Violet, feeling like something was off, grabbed a wood cutting ax and held it by her side while she brushed one of the horses.
Without warning the hand screamed and charged right at her. Violet was quicker than him though and held the ac up to block him from biting her. She shouted for Arthur which alerted him. The older man grabbed his shotgun and ran to the barn where he saw Violet sitting on the hands chest, hacking. She looked terrified. Arthur ran up and scooped his little sister in his arms.
It was then that Arthur made the executive decision to flee. Violet went kicking and screaming, not wanting to lose her animals. They couldnβt just be abandoned. Arthur made sure he cut all of the animals loose, giving them a chance of survival. With only two small bags backed Arthur and Violet drove from their quaint farm. They drove until the roads became congested. There was a military check point where people were being evaluated and indiscriminately taken from their cars. When they approached the check in a soldier gave Violet a look over and yanked her out of the car.
She kicked and screamed while Arthur pulled his 9mm out. He aimed for the officer but the man simply shot at Arthur, hitting him in the shoulder. The last thing Violet remembers was the bang and her vision went dark. When she woke up the blonde was in a cell with others in what seemed like a windowless underground bunker. Little did Violet know that she was randomly picked to be a test subject for a potential vaccine.
