Final Major Project

This is me threading my final piece onto the board. I decided to use two of my audios of nature calls and choir. I really enjoyed threading the audios and it came out really well. 

This was preparing the boards for the exhibit. I wanted to get involved and help out as much as possible. This is because my final piece required a white board so I could start threading as soon as it was finished and allocated.

I loved using the projector as an experiment as it made my audios standout and also enlarged along a wall at college. I chose these photos as I really liked the audio along the stairway at college it made it more interesting. 

I took this when it was a 1/3 of the way through. This was a hand stitched audio. It came out better than my first two attempts. This is because I used a ruler and also put holes on either end of the audio line to make it easier to thread. Having finished it. The threaded audio looks good and the colours being black and green make it stand out. I was inspired by the artist Peter Crawley.

I decided too expand on my idea of parabolic reflectors but make it into a tin and string communicator. I used string and wire as the cord and I was surprised that the string worked better than the wire. This was an enjoyable experiment but I wish I made it neater. However, the foil was having a hard time sticking down to the card bowl shape and kept on coming off.

Using nylon guitar strings and nails in the wood to create my natural musical instrument. The strings looked good however it didn’t play. This was because of a number of factors, such as the tightness of the string and the the area I used wasn’t hollow. Therefore, you couldn’t hear the sound. This got me thinking of ways to improve the instrument, this lead to more experimenting and using different types of string and also different materials. 

The high tide organ was constructed in 2002. It is described as the “musical manifestation of the sea”. The sculpture was designed by Liam Curtin and John Gooding. It is a unique interpretation of Blackpool’s natural and manmade environments. The instrument is played by the sea at high tide through 8 pipes which are attached to the sea wall. These are connected to 18 organ pipes within the sculpture. The sea water at high tide pushes up air which causes the organ pipes to make a noise. The pitch is based on the harmonic series in B-flat. This interests me as there is no human intervention to produce the sound. 

Caten is a levitating sound sculpture made of 300 wires made in 2012. The wires are suspended from 2 ropes, which is connected to a slow rotating motor at either end. The structure performs a gentle, organic movements. The sculpture is placed in a 12th century gothic chapel in Caen. The low frequencies resonate beautifully in the space and emphasises the character of the place. 

I recorded my dad playing the classical guitar. I managed to put my phone inside the hole so I could show the strings vibrate from inside. Developing from my yarn installations of physical sound and using strings from cellos or guitars to actually create the sound. 

This installation was of the cafe audio. I used the canteen as it holds a similar atmosphere to a cafe, this is because its a social area where people go to eat food. I didn’t like this yarn piece as the colours where difficult to see. Also, I used the window but the day was too dull so the pictures came out worse then I thought. On the other hand, It was interesting seeing the colours together as it is what people thought of when listening to my audio. 

This yarn installation was of traffic noise. The audio that I used was a recording from my holiday in KL. I used 2 cars as I thought it was appropriate for the audio, also the people I questioned about the noise said they thought of roads and cars when listening. I love the colours in the photos and the photo on the left reminds me of power lines. I loved making this installation and using the cars. 

I created this yarn installation from the response of the bird tweet audio I have. This was interesting because while creating the installation I also was hearing different bird calls. I also love the way it is shaped like a giant megaphone. The only problem with this installation was the colours I used. The colours were very natural such as greens blues and browns, I would have loved for the yarn to stand out more and have a contrast from its surroundings. 

I loved the idea of using yarn to visually see sound. The artists who created this installation wanted people to physically see and feel the music without actually hearing music. This has inspired my work greatly on creating my own sound yarn installations. To create something similar but my own work, I used my audio clips and asked people what colours they thought of when listening and the shapes they associated the audios with. This allowed me to create installations from their own feelings.

Using Peter Crawley’s idea I created my own illustration. I also used one of the audios that I made from my projects primary research. I used the audio as a guide line to help keep the thread straight which was very difficult. I wish that the colour of thread was brighter so you can see it against the black of the audio.

I really liked artist Peter Crawley audio illustrations as they are sharp and neat against the paper that was used. I hopefully would like to create my own version of his work. It is a very different way of showing audios by using thread. His work is all hand stitched which is impressive as it looks so perfect. I would like to develop on the thread audios and place 2 audios on top of each other then stitch using different coloured threads.
