While out collecting resources, Maddie makes out the bustle of a pillager patrol through the trees. Knowing there's a village concerningly close by, and knowing that these pillagers always giver her trouble anyway, she goes ahead and stealthily picks off the patrol one by one with her bow.
Except for a familiar face.
Still curious about this guy, she decides to try to talk to him (after he's disarmed of course). Something that's never worked with any illager before -to the point that she'd given up a while ago- but this sharpshooter... Hell, why not?
She starts interrogating him, saying she recognizes him as the sharpshooter that took her out like 4 times from that one outpost. He, apparently full of surprises, he actually responds. Stiff, one word answers, or sometimes only shaking his head, but he DOES acknowledge her words. So since she's got THIS guy in a spot where he's listening to her, she makes a proposal.
He leaves the encounter changed. He once thought nothing in this world could take him out. That's not the case anymore. The only reason he's alive is because SHE decided so. And what's most confusing, she THANKED him for listening, after letting him go before he ran. On one hand, that being is infinitely more dangerous than he'd ever imagined. But on the other hand. He can't shake the uneasy feeling at what she said. It must be a trick, surely. For what though?
The next time she passes by an outpost, she sees him up top aiming. But the moment he realizes it's her, suddenly his head is rushing and he can't pull the trigger. Heartrate skyrocketing. The same paralyzing, icy panic when he was pinned, axe to his throat. And she waves at him.
And he suddenly feels like he’s got a target on his back, as if the grim reaper has his number. Nauseous and Afraid. For the first time in almost as long as he can remember as the implications set in.
Of course she mistakes this moment for him actually honoring the truce. He saw her! And he didn’t shoot!! Even if the other pillagers still tried, she supposed he has no control over anyone else. But she KNOWS he could hit her from that distance, and he didn't. With that, he's just become her new favorite person, unbeknownst to him. His life is about to be turned on its head.
