backstory:
Ebon Delaney has lived many lives in his 42 years. By age 12, he'd lived in 7 different states due to his mom's inability to form a meaningful and long lasting relationship. Each break up she went through, she packed them up and moved someplace new. She'd find a new boyfriend, and the cycle would repeat itself. Over and over. The constant moving made it hard for Ebon to make friends, so he stopped trying after a while. He didn't have a best friend until 13, when a prolonged stay in Texas made it possible. For the first time, his mom was in a happy and healthy relationship, Ebon and his sister were making friends in school, and they were making plans for the future. Naturally, things didn't work out.
When his mom announced they would be moving again, Ebon ran away to his best friend's house and broke down. His friend's mom overheard, and offered to let Ebon stay with them to finish out the last semester of school. His mom agreed, and one semester turned into a summer, and then into the rest of high school. By the time he graduated, Ebon had been going to the same school for four straight years.
As a teenager, Ebon and his friend started dabbling in the rodeo. Goat tying and breakaway roping turning into bull riding professionally by 18. As a bull rider, he started traveling the world, seeing places he never thought he would. Ebon used to hate all the moving around, but this time it was doing something he loved. By 22, he was ranking in the top 10, and had found the girl of his dreams to marry. Life on the road was great, but whenever they were alone the girl of his dreams turned into one from a nightmare.
For the five years of their marriage, his wife was abusive. They'd start fighting, and she'd start throwing shit. She didn't just throw things around or at the wall, but directly at Ebon with the aim to hit him. He knew he wasn’t a saint, he often picked fights with her when he was having a particularly bad day. But he’d never raised a hand to her in anger. The end of their marriage came in the form of an old-fashioned glass hitting him in the temple, a concussion and 10 stitches. He was no stranger to concussions due to his sport, but this one hit differently. Ebon realized he needed a change. A new life.
He was newly 28 and on to life number 3. Ebon moved to Colorado and started working as a logger. He was no stranger to dangerous jobs. For 3 years he worked hard and lived simple. Trying to save money while he figured out what he wanted to do next. Ebon had never had many dreams, but there had to be something that brought joy into his life. Being alive had to be more than just breathing. Two days after his 31st birthday, Ebon fell out of a tree and broke his back. The man who had been on the go since he was just a boy, was now confined to a bed for months on end. When he was healed, he required even more months of rehab, needing to relearn even the most basic things. His entire thirty first year was spent recovering, and figuring out where he went next.
His 32nd year brought on the desire to learn about the father he’d never known. Ebon’s “sperm donor” (as his mother not so fondly referred to him as) had been one of the many men on his mother’s roster. The way she told it, they’d been happy for a while and she thought they would last but his father left town before Ebon even took his first breath. While still in contact with his mother, Ebon’s idea of her had shifted dramatically since childhood. He no longer believed what she said about his father. Sure, maybe the man had left but… had he even known she was pregnant in the first place? So, Ebon began to look into his ancestry.
Life number 4 began in Lebanon. It took over a year for Ebon to find actual family members, but he did it. And it was a no-brainer to fly across the world to meet them, hoping that they would point him in the direction of his father. When he arrived and finally met another family member besides his mother, he learned that his father had passed away years before. While devastating news to hear, Ebon didn’t let it stop him from getting to know the family members he could. They told him everything there was to know about his father, and helped him feel close to the man for the first time in his life. Ebon spent 2 years there before finally moving back to the states where he legally changed his name to Ebon Delaney-Saab to reflect his newfound history.
He's 37 and back in Texas for the first time in nearly a decade, Ebon got a job as a carpenter, specifically building furniture. He’d always been good with his hands so when his old friend from high school, who had once offered him the chance to settle, needed help in his shop Ebon stepped up. He didn’t stop building out his family tree, but he needed to build his bank account back up and figure out what came next in life.
A few years after moving back to Texas, Ebon got in contact with a 3rd cousin living in Pinehaven, Washington. He was ready for a change so he packed up his bags and headed north. He was able to get a job at Hank’s Hardware and a carpenter for hire around town. He and his cousin are slowly getting to know each other and piece together the parts of their lives the other was missing. Ebon doesn’t know how long he’ll stick around, but he’s never lived a small town life before, so he’ll give it a shot.

Ebon was standing to the side of a 20x20 inflatable square with a mechanical bull stationed in the middle of it. He'd been watching for the past twenty minutes and contemplating whether or not he should give it a go. It had been years since he'd been on the back of a real bull and even longer since he'd gotten onto a fake one just for fun. Ebon's back wasn't the same as it was when he was in his 20s both because of age and because he'd never fully healed since he broke it in his early 30s. But... part of him just wanted to say screw it and climb on the machine. Just to see if he still had it.
Shifting back slightly, Ebon tested the tightness of his back. When he turned to stretch to the left he noticed someone else standing there, watching the teenage boy that was currently getting thrashed around. "Going up?" He asked, nodding towards the bull. Ebon's back was tight, but at this point he didn't know if that was going to stop him. "If I do, will ya call an ambulance if I start yellin' once I go flyin'?" He was only half joking.
