Both of them sacrificed to give each other the good life but neither wanted that. Both of them wanted to be with each other. I know it's just making their sacrifices in vain but that's how Hino portrays how much they want to be with each other, specially Kaname. Normal human life means nothing if he cannot be with Yuki.

The ending makes no sense to some because it threw away Yuki's sacrifice, but that's not what he wants. He wants to be with Yuki. I think that's what Hino is trying to portray, the weight of their feelings and desire to be with one another.
