Hello, was thinking of making a webtoon and I was wondering if you had any tips for comic creators?
uhfnjd heres some off the top of my head:
- use the process thats easiest for you! i know csp has a lot of comic page settings/presets but tbh for me (right now anyway) its way too complicated and too much work..,.its easier to just use the grid and box tool instead of creating panels with all these layers and uhfjdf no thanks
- not every panel needs backgrounds!! 1 actual background every 4-5 panels (or one per page if youre doing pages) is enough!! just to remind the reader where they are!! otherwise use patterns/colors/etc
- look at other webcomics to see how they handle certain situations!! like if youre wondering “hmm is it weird to use x here? / can i get away with x?” just go look at other comics to see if they do the same!!
- try to make diverse panels!! its okay to do a bunch of face shots, but ive read comics before where literally every panel is just a face shot and its meh LMFAO! try to use different angles, scenes, etc. one of my favorite things to use in panels to break the monoteny is 1) panels with NOTHING but speech bubble(s), 2) panels that show an element of a scene (like outside the window, the sky, the scenery, etc), 3) off-center whatever it is. cut off their face by half the panel. frame it cinematically. 4) weird framing like just the very top of their hair or something
- dont be afraid to make your style look silly/dumb. chibify your characters in funny scenes. make them low-res. not every panel needs to be the mona lisa (in fact you should save all your effort for the high-impact panels)
- on that same note, dont waste time on bad panels!! ive had that feeling before where i wanted a certain panel to look good but it just DOESNT for some reason?? either 1) erase the whole panel, do other things, and return to it a day or two days later to try again, or 2) just leave it. let it be ugly. odds are its not even that ugly, its that your style is honing. i GUARANTEE it looks just as fine as your other panels to your readers (plus theyre gonna spend 2 seconds on it reading the speech bubble and then move on)
- (this is very specific to me, but) backgrounds dont nessecarily need to be super detailed. obvious if the background is the focus of the panel and youre trying to communicate something with it, it should be clear, but otherwise you can get away with just the impression of a street/shop/room/etc!! again, dont waste too much time on things people will spend 2 seconds on!! as long as their brain sees it and goes “room,” youre fine!!
- its ok to choose a style for your comic that makes your life easier. obviously i would LOVE TCWG to be in full color but its just way too much work for me, between colors, shading and backgrounds (especially since its harder to use plain/pattern backgrounds in color comics), so i purposely chose a comic style where i rarely have to shade, and only use the gray spectrum and lots of plain white!!
- make sure you pace yourself!! a lot of my tips are things to streamline the process/make things faster or easier bc i would hate to spend so much time and effort on an episode, and once its finished people are just clamoring for the next one already!! which is sort of the bane of comic creating. i would prefer loosely connected one-shots as opposed to an ongoing storyline, because after finishing a one-shot im like “yeah!! people can enjoy this wholely and i can rest!!” vs. posting a 2-3 parter and after finishing one im like “damn i gotta do the next one soon so we all can sleep easier” and its a lil tiring LOL!!!!! ofc people rarely harass me for the next episode, but it does have a lil pressure when you leave a cliffhanger for over a month LMFAO!! 😭😭😭
