It was a moment. A second. But you didn't hesitate. If you've learned something from the countless missions you've been on, it's that your.. reckless bravery as the ghouls liked to call it, came in handy. This time around, it ended up saving his life.
You open your eyes, hours later, in Darkwick's hospital wing, only to be met face to face with his frown.
"I would appreciate it if you stopped throwing your life on the line. It is most troublesome," Ritsu sighs, grabbing himself a stool before sitting down by your bed.
"It's not like I'm doing it on purpose," you let out a small laugh. The ghoul doesn't look amused.
"I have to say I'm staring to doubt it," he sighs before pulling something out of the briefcase he always carries.
"This will ensure you will remain safe in the future," he says, handing you a small stack of documents.
"What's.. that?"
"A contract. I need your signature here and.. here."
You frown slightly at his vague explanation. Slowly, you read through the contents.
"Ritsu," you chuckle, "I can't sign this. The missions naturally come with risks. You should know that."
"Is staying away from anomalies within a safe hundered meters radius as mentioned in the contract really above your abilities?" The ghoul gives you a skeptical look.
"I don't want to just watch you fight though. I want to help too," you argued.
Ritsu shifted in his seat. "And I don't want anything bad to happen to you."
Silence fell over the room as your eyes widen slightly. The ghoul clears his throat.
"You are a... valuable asset for us ghouls, I mean. It is in our interest to protect you. But I will let you think this through."
The ghoul then stands, wishing you a speedy recovery before mumbling something about work and leaving. Looking terribly troubled as he did so.
"You're awake... that's a relief. You scared us.." Subaru's gaze is full of worry as he sits by your side.
You feel him hold your hand, and he lets go as soon as you notice it.
"O-Oh, I'm sorry!" he quickly apologizes, "I-I was just really worried about you and-"
"Hey, calm down. It's fine," you offer him a reassuring smile. "It's nice to know I'm not alone."
The ghoul nods, blushing slightly, before his expression shifts back into worry again.
"What you did back there.. I-I appreciate it I really do.. but please don't do it ever again. It was incredibly dangerous."
"You and the others always save me," you argue.
Subaru lets out a small sigh. "It is part of our duty to do so. And we are ghouls. You are an irreplaceable part of our team and without you it's just-"
He stops when his voices trembles slightly, trying to regain his composure. Your heart almost breaks at the sight.
"We.. I don't want to lose you," he allows himself a sliver of honesty, taking your hand again, "so please, let me protect you from now on. I-I want to be someone you can rely on.. even though I know I don't deserve it..."
"Subaru.."
"Please," he continues, "I know it's selfish of me, but please promise me you won't do this again."
You're torn. You want to be safe, protected. It's not like you really do want to die. But you want the same for him. You want him safe as well.
"I'll.. think about it," you say in the end, and he smiles.
For now, the hope alone is enough to calm his racing heart.

People pretending societal disgust with students and professionals relying on AI like a crutch is some sort of Luddite pearl-clutching against new technology completely dismiss how seriously institutions and the general public used to treat traditional forms of academic dishonesty like plagiarism and cheating. It used to be career-ending. Then-Senator Biden lost-out on his first run for the presidency largely because of a plagiarism scandal and he was neither the first or last to suffer consequences for similar dishonesty.
LLM are, by definition, plagiarism machines. The automation does not afford the user the plausible deniability of โoh, I did not know I was copyingโ because copying is all these AI systems do. Even relying on LLMs trained exclusively on content knowingly and willingly uploaded by the original authors (which do not exist anyway) is no better because the end user is still trying to pass-off someone elseโs work as their own to cover-up for their lack of original effort, insight, or creativity.
There is no acceptable reason to use generative AI for leisure, academic, or professional pursuitsโthe first is stupid, the second is dishonest, the third is dangerous.
