Queer people getting to be open and talk about their desire for sex is important in a world where queer people are prevented from being with the people they want
Asexual people getting to be open and talk about not wanting sex and never having sex is important in a world that tries constantly to sell sex to us as an inevitable activity
Disabled people fighting for the right to marry is important in a world that holds life-saving benefits hostage and prevents one from marrying
Women fighting for the right to divorce or to never marry is important in a world that pushes women into a subordinate role of "wife"
Ex-Religious people fighting for the right to leave a religion or not be forced to convert to a religion is important in a world that subjects everyone to predatory missionary work
Religious people fighting for the right to practice their religion and do so openly is important in a world that prioritized religions over one another--often Christianity but not always
And you could substitute many more things into this. Young people fight to not be infantilized by authority, but they also in some areas fight to not be adultified. Some people have to fight so hard for a variety of reasons to be able to grow out their hair. Some people have to fight so hard to be able to cut it. Some fight to be allowed to wear coverings, some fight to be allowed to wear nothing. Some fight to be left alone, some fight to get the care they need. Some fight to be able to leave, some fight to be able to stay.
None of these comparable fights are opposed to one another, because the fight isn't about the specific thing, it is all about the same thing: autonomy.
Someone's fight to wear a dress is someone's fight to wear pants is someone's fight to live alone is someone's fight to live with someone is someone's fight to be left alone by medical institutions is someone's fight to be able to medically alter their body.
It is the same fight. People who want the opposite for themselves that I want for me are my siblings. We want the exact same thing: the choice to be who we want, how we want, on our terms.
And I WANT that for everyone. I want people to be allowed to choose what I wouldn't, do what I wouldn't, because then I would be free to do what I want and need.

when you talk to ppl who say things like this it becomes abundantly clear that the difficulty they speak of in this situation often comes from a desire to hold onto the ideologies theyre supposed to be unlearning. which isnt really something you deserve empathy for lol
conversations of amatonormativity and consent overlap a lot and should be discussed side by side more frequently. because when you live in a society that teaches you that you’re supposed to want sex and romance, that you may want to say no in the moment but you shouldn’t say no forever, any statements about consent get muddied. you cannot at once preach that consent is vital and “you can always say no” and also insist that people should give sex and romance a try, even when they express disinterest, telling them “eventually you’ll find the right person.”

There's an interaction I had online a little while ago that I think about a lot. I shared (in a fairly "woke" space) that recent-ish meta study that showed that while we don't have a lot of actual usable data on the subject, everything we currently have on transfem athletes gives us no real reason to think they have an athletic advantage. and people were not happy with this. One person immediately went in talking about a time a professional men's soccer team beat a professional women's soccer team by a large margin. And this was generally accepted and supported; no one but me seemed able to notice how irrelevant that was. No one cared that in a conversation about transfems on estrogen they pulled out an isolated instance of cisgender men competing against cisgender women. No one cared that they ignored everything about the study I shared and instead just said "no amount of estrogen can account for that athletic difference" and backing that claim up with absolutely nothing. No one cared they said, and I quote, "[in high level athletics] trans women are a threat to cis women." They admitted to cherrypicking, saying that they could find as many examples of men beating women as they wanted. And this was considered (through the democracy of up/downvotes) to be better evidence and citation than the specific metanalysis I shared that covered 50+ studies.
After poking and prodding they acknowledged that hrt will remove the benefits of testosterone on muscle mass, but insisted that trans women have "larger more rugged skeletons" that give them an insurmountable athletic advantage in all sports. It's a pretty bog standard transmisogynistic claim, yes, but the amount of critical thought required to kill here was incredible. saying with your whole chest that all sports come down to how tall you are and how dense your bones are. choosing to ignore that cis women also can be tall and have dense bones, and will still be allowed to compete. When a cis women is big and strong, its Always because she is a good athlete. When a trans woman is big and strong, no matter how much medical transition she does it's Always because she was "born male."
just. yeah it's to be expected. no I was not really surprised by any of this. But it is an example of how much thinking people are willing to turn off in their minds to see trans women and our bodies as a) ultimately and immutably Male and b) inherently dangerous, even in allegedly progressive spaces. and you can't argue with it. you tell people "hrt meaningfully changes trans people's bodies and regardless there's way less difference between 'male' and 'female' bodies than you think" and they look at you like you've grown a second head and sister, they're on their second mission from king eurystheus

i was on the phone with my father earlier today talking about videogames (typical for conversation with my father), i was telling him about my lord of the rings online character who i imagine is a horse-thief from rohan and my father said “i imagine that is a very serious crime in rohan” with real concern in his voice

I mean people will see gender swapped player models and skip straight past just how blatantly misognistic the animations for women are and instead go "Haha whoa I need this fr!!!". Because no one sees women as human beings, let alone ones worth depicting in media as such.
