derek’s eyes stare at the drink slid over to him, and he’s not sure how to reply to that immediately. he considers not even taking it, and walking away, but maybe his exha-ustion is just that obvious -- because he doesn’t feel like moving.

Scott blinks in surprise when Derek comes closer only to suggest leaving altogether. Considering it, it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea; he’s not sure where to go from here, or how he truly feels about Derek. Minutes ago, he would’ve known–or assumed he knew–but now things are kind of confusing. Maybe he should take some time to really think about it.

“I’m definitely okay with it,” he replies first, because it’s true. He does know that much; he knows he would never judge anyone for how they feel about him, whether it’s love or hate, not at this stage of his life. “I don’t…know why I would need you to go.”

“I just don’t want to make you uncomfortable,” he replies softly, and doesn’t make another move to get any closer to Scott -- not yet, anyway. Derek’s aware of boundaries, and he’s feeling vulnerable enough himself that he doesn’t want to ruin anything -- especially not with Scott. He’s too important to do anything much more reckless.

Well, that was. . .unexpected, to say the very least. Normally he’d be upset, or defensive, but after a moment of stiffness when Steve pulled away he kind of. . .deflated. Admitting he needed anything wasn’t quite in his personality, but it could have come from someone a lot worse. Derek let out a breath and shrugged.  

“ I’m fine, but uh -- thanks. For that. ”

They’re not particularly touchy-feely as a family anymore. There aren’t really any hugs, many pats on the back, or shows of affection. Not that they dislike each other, but that they’ve been through SO MUCH that they both have their defensive qualities. Sometimes being touched is just. . .more than they can handle. Derek respects that, and so does Cora.

Except there must be something obvious on his face, or his eyes, when Cora sees him for the first time in a few weeks -- she’s back from South America for a visit, justspecifically for him. They’re barely in the room together five minutes before her armsare wrapped around him, and he lets out a soft breath, leaning right into his youngersister’s frame.

If anyone’s allowed to touch or hug him like this, it’s her.

“That’s still…something I never really thought I’d hear you say, but I can’t say I’m not glad. That you’re back. You know? Not just ‘cause you, uh, helped save my life and everything, either, just ‘cause…having you around is nice.”

Scott is really not sure how to deal with this. Not a lot of people have admitted things like this to him, and even if they had, hearing it from Derek Hale seems like it should be some kind of trick–but Derek would never do that.

So he’s a little shy when he says, “um. I’m glad you…wanted me to know.” 

Wow, that sure is genius.

It’s endearing, the shyness that Scott’s showing, and it makes Derek’s affection grow - though he’s still trying to keep it low key, just so that he doesn’t make the alpha uncomfortable. That’s the last thing he wants, all things considered. 

He does take a step closer to him, but pauses after that.

         “ not really. everything else is better than this place.”
