A LETTER TO MY ANGELS WHO NEVER FAILED TO CHEER ME UP

9 years ago, 9 talented individuals assembled to become a part of a team who will soon conquer the hearts of everyone in the world. Girl groups weren’t a thing way back then -- but they never gave up and years later, they had multiple wins on music shows, brought home the biggest of awards in year-end ceremonies, released hits after hits, and crowned as the Nation’s girl group. Who would have thought that these young ladies would have been one of the girl groups young ones nowadays look up to?

I wasn’t there with you during your debut stage. I wasn’t there with you when you were all downgraded by some people who thought you wouldn’t make it. I wasn’t there with you when you were all hated for simply being girls who wanted to achieve their dreams. I wasn’t there with you when fandoms turned their lightsticks off because they simply don’t like you (trust me, this still makes me angry). I wasn’t there with you when you had your first music show win. I wasn’t there with when you all cried because you made a breakthrough in the history of girl groups by taking home the big awards that were usually awarded to boy groups.

But I am here with you.

I am here with you despite the new era of girl groups debuting here and there. I am here with you when everyone’s looking up at the stars in the galaxy that are so close but still so far. I am here with you despite the fact that people called you “traitors”, “liars”, and so much more simply because a member left on her own will. I am here with you as you continue to prove everyone that despite being a decade-old group, you’re still one of the brightest stars out there. I am here with you as I watch you all turn into beautiful ladies and be the person who you have always wanted to be.

I’m thankful that I existed in the same lifetime as you. I may not have been a fan from the very beginning, but as I watch you all as the years pass by, I feel like I’ve always known you. You are the closest thing to what they call home. You make me smile when I don’t feel like doing so, you make me laugh because of your silly antics, and you make me feel like the happiest girl alive just because of your simple existence.

I’m sorry that you have to be hated for loving what you are doing. It’s not your fault that jealousy takes over the heart of those people simply because they want you to go down the drain and let their “faves” step on you. I’m sorry that you are all called “traitors” for “apparently kicking a member out through voting”. Really, that’s the most childish of all reasons. We know that she’s happy on her own now and SNSD will always have a special place in her heart. And she is and will always be a special person for you. I’m sorry that you have to be bashed for keeping quiet about this matter. You are not obliged to explain to those close-minded people because SONEs know that the years you spent with her weren’t a lie. I’m sorry that you’re hated because of having 8 members instead of the usual 9 and still continuing under the name of SNSD. You’re still SNSD, and you will always be SNSD no matter what.

It’s alright, girls. It’s alright if you want to have years of a break before releasing another album (but please don’t take too long, we always miss you). We understand that you now have something you really want: may it be being an actress, a solo singer, a model, or whatever you’re good at doing and you may not always be together as a group. We’ll support you no matter what happens. It’s alright to be not to be alright. We may not know when you are feeling upset but we are aware that you may have those kinds of episodes. You’re still a human being, just bearing the weight of being Asia’s favorite girl group. We know that it’s hard at times but always remember that there are SONEs cheering for you because you’ve touched our lives. We want to hold your hand too, just like how you hold ours.

Taeyeon, thank you for being the leader that they always needed. Please don’t mind those haters, they’re just jealous of you being successful because of your own hardwork. Jessica, thank you for being a part of SNSD. You may be on your own now, but always remember that SONEs are still looking after you. Be happy always! Sunny, my dear sunshine. Thank you for being the energy pill of the girls when they’re feeling down. You are one of the most mature out of the nine, and I’m really glad that you stand as their big sister. Tiffany, please continue to bring sunshine in everyone’s life. You’re not an attention-seeker, for Pete’s sake. You’re simply just friendly and lovely and that’s we love about you. Hyoyeon, thank you for the being the crazy one. You always make us laugh because of your straightforwardness and sarcastic remarks and gosh, I can’t imagine SNSD without your funny self. Yuri, you are a great person and I love the fact that you always keep yourself healthy. Continue being the wonderful girl as you are because we love you just like that. Sooyoung, another crazy girl, thank you for being one of the members who knows her way with words. You always said what was on your mind, and the words that come out of your mouth are magical. Yoona, you are important. You are more than just a pretty face because we’ve seen how big your heart is. Continue being a hardworker because all will pay off someday (but, I don’t know, maybe they’re all coming back to you now because you have all the good things in life), and Seohyun, our precious maknae, no matter how hard you protest, you will always be our favorite maknae. Thank you for being wise and nice girl because despite the crazy bunch, you’re the sanest.
