Yes, Kinnporsche is BL and yes, BL is a genre traditionally written for the straight female gaze, but there are some very authentic queer moments in Kinnporsche. In episode 8, Porsche is going through a queer milestone - his very first romantic relationship with someone of his own sex, with all the goofy, cringey weirdness all that implies. This episode really speaks to that experience which, for many queer folk like Porsche, often comes later in life because...well, so many reasons why...
Porsche's uncertainty about his first same sex relationship, his very first date, the navigation of his feelings of first love, how "out" he wants to be about it - it's all presented through a very queer lens and it's so refreshing to see. It speaks to those of us who have experienced queer romantic relationships in the same manner. The intimacy, the excitement, the teenagers-sneaking-around energy - that is such a real feeling that many queer folks can identify with.
So if you just don't get why episode 8 matters, miss the importance of Porsche learning to be in a relationship with a man, or simply struggle to see its relevance in the context of the larger story (episode 8 is an actual romance plot beat that regular consumers of the genre will recognize - but that's for another post), maybe it's because this aspect isn't for you. And straight audiences really need to start being okay with things not always being for them, especially in a show about GAY mafia boys who are in love with each other. In this context, it's important to recognize that there will be experiences that are not directly related to yours. That doesn't mean it's not relevant to someone. It's an Easter egg for queer folks in the room and I am loving everything about it.

I just noticed that Kinns pants are around his ankles. How did that man not fall on his ass? With Porsche in his arms (and Porsche’s pants around his thighs so he can't get a solid grip around Kinn’s waist) and the fact that Porsche is solid, Kinn has to shuffle all the way to the bed to avoid tripping on his own pants. And he does. Clearly they've practiced this. Possibly many times
This is... not exactly a Lines of Power post? It's more like a bonus "sparkles of power" post.
I noticed from the start that KinnPorsche often has visual moments with what I've been calling "star fields," even though I'm using it to include any sparkly lights.
Do I think they have meaning and significance? Maybe, maybe not. They seem to appear in a variety of situations, some extremely significant and some less so. To me, it seems too consistent and noticeable to be completely accidental.
For this post, I'm not going to break anything down -- I'll just share my discovery. Make of it what you will!

LET’S TALK ABOUT PORSCHE WANTING TO QUIT SMOKING NOW THAT HE AND KINN ARE TOGETHER. NO LET’S FUCKING TALK ABOUT IT COME ON. Porsche has only ever lived to provide for Porschay. His own mother said ‘You can’t die until he graduates college.’ Porsche sees himself as expendable. As long as he can provide for Porschay, his life is worth something. That’s why he takes the bodyguard job in the first place, sacrificing his morals. He puts himself into dangerous situations in street fights to win money and doesn’t care if he gets hurt. He smokes and drinks because he doesn’t care about his long-term health. I doubt he even expects to live past 30, so why should he bother? But now Porsche has something else to live for. Something to look forward to. Something to stay alive for. Other than the usefulness that he offers. He is starting to see himself not as a tool anymore. Starting to see his worth outside of what he can do for Porschay. And he has decided that he wants to live to see that. He wants to be alive and healthy for as long as he can if it means he can have this with kinn. I doubt he has ever felt true complete happiness since his parents died. But i think he’s now starting to recognise it, being so unrecognisable. He is starting to value his life. He chooses to live.

Without further ado, I shall address the lines of power, staging, and framing in Episode 8 of KinnPorsche... actually, I'm gonna take it easy because it was a very chill episode without too much wild, crazy line business.
Look, if you didn't already realize in the first 10 minutes that this episode is pure comedy, this shot should seal the deal. A head popping out at a random angle from a doorway is peak comedy, a pure classic staging art.
Porsche, why so cute? 😳
You guys. You guys. This looks like just a normal, cute shot on their date, right? Right?
WRONG. You've been FOOLED.
Look in the background. It's a mirror, another damn mirror!
Kinn is perfectly framed in the mirror, his other self haunting their date in a much more subtle way than Tawan did. This is a clever reminder that even though things seem sweet and fluffy now, they still have Kinn's alter ego and other life to contend with (and integrate?) if they want to be happy in the long run.

Again, nothing serious here, but I just want to point out that the sweethearts are off center to better incorporate the pretty golden glow of the temple behind them into the shot.
You can also take this as slight foreshadowing of the religious element coming later in the episode.
The lines of power were a bit shy this episode, but for this scene, they came out in full force.
This is reminiscent of the Emperor Korn shot in Ep 05 (for good reason considering they're the same set), but this is so different and so romantic. The sparkles from the waterfall, the glowing lines of the pool, and the lower lines of the ceiling are all pointing to the central couple, giving them the focus and the power.
The lines say this is love, and love wins.
Steal every bit of happiness you can! (I'm not just saying that to Kinn and Porsche, btw.)
Lots of soft, wavey lines of light... I can't help but think that all the soft lines are helping to emphasize how much their relationship has softened.
Yet the shot also shows Porsche clutching at Kinn's face for dear life. I'm not over that, not in the slightest. The boy is holding on with all his might. He's gonna be fierce about it.
...he probably also needs some air.
Q: When is a line of power not a line of power?
A; When you really just need a divider.
I could try to say that the big thick wooden line in the middle symbolizes this or that, or it's about Porsche being sneaky and not just asking Kinn the questions he should ask... but sometimes a line really is just a line.
For this gag to work, the characters have to be divided and unable to see each other.
So? Not a line of power, imo. But the shot is still very nicely framed with dynamic composition.
Pretty, so damn pretty.
Great staging composition of the three cast members -- Porsche low, monk middle, Joe high.
Scenery is fantastic and engaging from foreground to background.
The angle of the sidewalk line on the left helps draw attention to the actors.
On top of it all, Porsche stands out in his black suit against the soft white, cream, and orange color palette.
If you didn't give this shot much thought during the show, take a minute to stare right now. Enjoy an aesthetic moment!

Okay but the reason why it’s so fucking ridiculous and delightful is that everybody is in a different show, but instead of that being a bad thing it’s actually the best thing ever.
Chay thinks he’s in a university romcom about meeting your celebrity crush, whereas Kim thinks he’s in a detective thriller about uncovering dark family secrets where he breaks into a guy’s room and finds a shrine dedicated to him, only because he’s so lonely and starved for affection (it runs in the family) that instead of finding it off-putting he thinks it’s adorable.
(To be clear, it is adorable, because it’s perfectly normal for a 17?/18?yo aspiring songwriter to have pictures of their favorite musician on their walls, and presumably a well-known musician knows that. It’s not perfectly normal for said favorite famous musician to send the kid out for noodles and pick their bedroom lock and sneak in looking for… what? Who knows? Secrets, presumably.)
Meanwhile, in another show entirely, Vegas is basically going through life rewriting all of his experiences as Hannibal fanfic, like “explicit, creator chose not to use archive warnings, chapter 76/?, tags: slow burn, torture, attempted non-con, killer fashion, murder suit, flirting through violence, if villain bad why sexy” just on constant repeat in his mind, and he’s always making author notes to himself about how to make the gay parts more intense. I don’t think Pete knows yet that he’s also been cast in that 200k-word dead-dove-don’t-eat Hannigram fanfic (if the previews are anything to go by) but our boy didn’t even flinch, much less look away, during the torture scene, so he’s likely more ready for it than he seems.
Most importantly, Kinn and Porsche are trying to get into the same story but they’re not quite there yet, and certainly neither of them is in The Godfather or Goodfellas or whatnot, nor will they ever be, because Porsche is in The Bodyguard (1992) but is somehow both Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston, whereas Kinn is painfully but genuinely realizing that he’s been stuck in one of those depressing modern novels where combined daddy and trust issues have nearly destroyed his ability to connect to people and turned him into a toxic basket-case of repression and maybe he should work on fixing that.
(Oh and finally, sir not appearing in this episode but: Tankhun is in a particularly chaotic early season of The Real World and actually does know it. He’s the only one who knows exactly what genre he is in because he chose it for himself.)
Is there a plot? I don’t care if there is a plot. Crime guys shoot crime guys with guns for… crime guy reasons. Isn’t that what kind of plot these shows always have, idk, it’s not important. Everybody is beautiful and gay and complicated and fucked up. We’re all going to horny jail. I want to know what happens next to all these men having intense emotional problems they try to solve with violence and handjobs! What a fun show.
