I shoot because I can

I had the recent fortune to travel around Europe while studying over a course of 5 months. Stepping out of my comfort zone has broadened my perspectives; it truly is a big world out there. Despite the thrill and excitement, the constant travelling does get tiring, and at times one cannot help but miss the mundane joy of staying put on a sofa with Netflix mindlessly playing on the tele; “home”.

Home: a simple idea that we are all familiar with, yet bears a different meaning from person to person. It is amazing how we continue to find solace in places so foreign, yet feel lost in places we should be so accustomed to.  This photo series is a collection of photos from my travels, but also an interpretation on the idea of “home”.

Rochor Centre is an iconic group of HDB buildings found in Singapore, that was slated to make way for the development of a new highway. Its numerous residents, many of which have been living there for years, have since vacated, leaving behind an empty shell of its former glory.

As the hustle and bustle faded, and hipsters bid one last goodbye to the colourful buildings that made for great Instagram posts, I too sought to explore the area before it became yet another page in our history textbooks.

As I walked along the empty corridors, littered with unwanted belongings, I imagined what the estate would have been like in its prime; boisterous children running around wildly, as aunties sat together for their afternoon gossip. It was strange to think that once upon a time, this area had been so lively; it was also regretful, that we would never be able to fully comprehend the entire history of this place.
