          she tries to keep her voice level as she speaks to him — tries to embody the utmost dignity, but it’s a hard task to complete when her cheek is nestled against the softest fur she’s ever had the honour of feeling. her arms are buried within the fluff. her fingers are buried within the fluff. she has half a mind to bury her entire face in it, too.

          ❝ you are very soft, ❞ she informs him, voice warm and wobbly with delight. she says it again, like she doesn’t tell him every single day, like she doesn’t whisper it in awe every time she sinks a hand into his fur: ❝ oh, you are very soft! ❞

    oh, he shouldn’t. he shouldn’t!

    but as much as he stands with dignity in front of the queen -- no matter how she presents herself -- his tail, which has come to rest on the dirt path behind them, twitches.

    and then, swishes.

        Oh, of course. The boy does not know who he is just yet. But Ganondorf knows him well enough, and in those sharp blue eyes he can see him. A time long past, another life while Ganondorf remains the same. Growing stronger and stronger before the Hero could even be reborn.

        The threat does not go unanswered. Ganondorf bares his own teeth in a snarl, eyes gleaming. He keeps a good distance between them, knowing better than to provoke a— wild beast. Since that is all the boy really is right now, isn’t he? How funny. Maybe they are more alike this time around than he thought.

        “Be smart, child,” he warns. “You are in no state to fight me yet, unless you’re willing to become a very handsome rug.”

      Even with the space between them, Link has to crane his head up. The man’s eyes are alight with something as feral as the beast appears -- and he isn’t a spirit. That alone says something.

     the younger ganondorf has a light in his eyes that isn’t driven by power. the wolf doesn’t sit, but instead bows his head, shoving his face into the scritches. a big a wolf as he, it takes little effort to unbalance the gerudo, knock him on his back, give him a long friendly lick.

     do you have any idea, any idea at all, what you have cost me?

    the words haunt his memories. his dreams.

     in the morning, they will collect their belongings and risk their lives. but for now -- the fire crackles beside them. but for now -- the sand is warm and cooling rapidly under their campsite. but for now -- in the night sky, stars twinkle down at them like fairies.

     he doesn’t know what it cost. 

     but as link turns a tight circle and curls himself up next to power’s newest ancestor, he knows:
