Iâve great respect for the power of prayer to dislodge devils, but in this instance, Iâd prefer to use a hundred pounds or so of round stone shot, at close quarters.

âAll the most beautiful men become monks,â she said. 'Itâs an oecumenical law or something. I canât imagine how they keep up the breed. Whatâs wrong? Has Francis been rude? Then you must try to overlook it. I know you wouldnât think so, but he is thoroughly upset by Tom Erskineâs death; and when Francis is troubles he doesnât show it, he just goes and makes life wretched for somebody.â

âToday,â said Lymond, 'if you must know, I donât like living at all. But thatâs just immaturity boggling at the sad face of failure. Tomorrow Iâll be bright as a bedbug again.â

âI tell you, if there were a few more of you and you werenât so damned holy, you could kick out both the Marshal and the Spanish crew calling the tune, get the Calabrians on your side and let them reduce us to a heap of sand before we had to give in. And we wouldnât have to give in.â Jerott stopped. 'You tried on Malta to get Gabriel to revolt. He told you why he wouldnât, and Iâm telling you the same. It would be open revolt against the Order. It would mean the end of us. Iâve taken an oath to obey.â

Lawful good characters, always getting in the way of good plans.

I posted some good posts this morning you may want to check them out ;)
âFight ye in Godâs true battle, says the Qur'ân,â ended the General piously; and d'Aramon drily answered, 'The Christian Bible says much the same thing.â

You're going to love this book.
I finished Queenâs Play last night and oh my got that was brutal but so good! So emotional. Francis Crawford is Problematic Fave of my heart now, and shall i think not ever be shaken from his place there. A lot of it was very difficult, like the 1550 treatment of animals, and Robin Stewart, and to an extent the whole of the Thady Boy Ballagh ordeal. But it was all necessary, all needed for the story and not gratuitous, and not there to make you sneer at the brutality and stupidity of the past, but to show how even their brutality worked by certain rules which even Lymond could not avoid but only bend to his advantage when he could.
I appreciate how sheâs never trying to be âgrittyâ and ârealisticâ the way so many do these days. In face she shows as much of the beauty and the glory as the the violence and dissolution. The writing is lyrical, the scenery is vivid and lovely. Itâs not Everything Is Awful writing, a direction in which many adventuresome series full of intrigue frequently tend, to their dullness and detriment. Itâs a different style altogether, and it gives the narrative so much more life and context, makes the stakes that much higher.
And Francis Crawford. I canât even put it into words yet but. There is a man. There is a character. So deftly done and so complex. Itâs a wonder he isnât better known, i canât believe iâve just heard of Dunnettâs books in the last few months.Â

tfw you casually pick up The Ringed Castle and then two hours later you still havenât moved and everything hurts
Colored version. I really like the font of the Title so I decide to decorate it.
Oonagh O'Dwyer Queenâs Play version first appearance I forgo the dress referenceâŚitâs not even 15th centuriesâ.
All the while, rereading Queenâs play this time with the audiobook version really add to the experience. Lymondâs true voice and Thadyâs version is so fitting. And this time, I finally get the character of O'LiamRoe.
It was Richard. She smiled widely none the less [âŚ]

Itâs not the old storiesâŚ.that document. What a revelation, though I donât think Sybilla reasons is justified. Oh but how I love Dunnettâs allusion to the first time they met!

And we have ten knights to fight against that! The armies of Spain and Italy and all the Low Countries should be arriving unasked to stand here with us. My God, are we merchants, taking a keen risk for commerce, or rich men greedy for land for our sons, or blood-crazed soldiers killing for gold? Or are we preserving the soft white hides of the Emperorâs Christian subjects at the cost of our lives, for the love of Christ and our fellow-men?

i realize this is probably going to end very badly for me but in QP i got very invested in Oonagh OâDwyer, and in Francis/Oonagh in spite of everything and because of everything and⌠iâm a quarter or there abouts into Disorderly Knights and mostly this is just painful. I also realize fully that there are too many more books to this series for this to be part of the plan, plus talk about anvil dropped RE: Phillipa at the beginning of the book. But. itâs Unfair and i mostly just hope Oonagh survives and i feel certain she wonât and i donât want to see it happen. I was able to forgive her for Christian because it felt so inevitable but this. This does not.
Iâm honestly struggling to read this one and iâm not having the usual tortured fun with the Lymond Antics, Iâm just unhappy. And hate Gabriel/Graham/whoever the fuck a lot. All the knights really. I prefer to avoid militant christians even in fiction tbh :s
