Hi! I assume you're here for the home evaluation?
[There's a shorter, rather anxious looking man standing in the doorway. He practically jumps when she opens the door.]
Eh- yes! Yes that would be what I'm here for. Edmund Barnes, DUMP CPS.
I can't help but notice that you've got some exquisite ward work around your apartment. Are you expecting a home invasion by any chance...?

Oh, that? (she tilts her head) No, my friend needed a place to practice something larger-scale after he'd warded his own place, and since I'm humanborn, I liked the idea of a bit of extra protection in this new life. Even though I've got a good handle on my magic and defense stuff now.
I'll tell him you think it's exquisite, I'm sure he'll be happy to hear that. (she smiles) You can come in.
(She steps aside to let him enter and look around)

Off, please. And yes, he's very talented! I've been trying to mimic his wards, but I can't quite manage it as accurately as I'd like. Too many weak points in mine.. oh well.
(She stays standing off to the side with her arms resting behind her back)
[He slips off his shoes. He's wearing socks with a silly pattern on them.]

[He takes a quick glance around the entry way and flips through his papers on his clipboard and checks a couple of items off.]
Would you like to give me the grand tour? I'll investigate a few things on my own later, but I would like to ease you into this inspection as best I can. New foster parents are often nervous about having a stranger look around their home.
(She presses her mouth shut to stop herself from laughing at the socks)
Oh, yeah! (She steps into the middle of the living room) So, as you can see to your left, there's the kitchen. I've got a baby gate in the entrance area there just in case I end up taking in a baby or toddler. The cabinets have got baby locks too, and there's caps on the oven controls to prevent them from being moved if a kid gets into the kitchen. It's an electric stove, not gas, luckily.
To your right is my room- (she walks over and opens the door) I've got a PC setup in there, my bed, and a closet.. not a whole lot, but the wiring is something I've done my best to safely contain, again in case of a younger kiddo being placed here. I'd be keeping this locked most of the time anyways if I had a small kid, really.
Obviously this here in front of you is the living room. I've put padding on the couch arms because for some reason it was just wood there before and that's not comfortable and can be bumped into.. There's a toybox in that corner and that's my cats' food bowl and dispenser there. And a highchair. I've got two cats, but one of them is in the process of possibly being taken in by a friend who's been wanting a cat. The other one is Fizz. He's sorta trained. Fizz! (A black and white cat comes running over, looking at Edmund and meowing curiously) He's a real tolerant kitty, so I think he'll go well with kids. The other cat just keeps to herself.
There's also the dining table next to the kitchen. Not much to say there?
On the wall opposite you, the right door is the bathroom and the left door is the kids room. I'm sure those ones'll need more examination since they're big necessities for the kids. I'll get to those in a second once you've gotten to process the rest of what I've said.
Those are all very good precautions to have taken. So far you're looking up to code.
[He bends down to get a closer look at the wiring and makes a couple of notes on the room set up.]

I've also noticed that you've capped your open electrical outlets which is very smart if we do place a younger child with you.

No, um, just a regular tuxedo cat. The other one's an american shorthair. At least, mostly. I haven't gotten them a genetics test or anything.
(Fizz sniffs his hand, then looks up at him again, seeming confused about who this new person is. He is very polite about it, though.)

I've got a training potty just in case, and one of those.. they make the toilet seat smaller, I forget the word. The shower and tub have got mats to prevent slipping, and I've got baby-safe soap and a small infant bath.. lots of baby stuff around, no idea where I'm going to put it all when I'm not fostering a baby..
There's a stool for reaching the sink and I've got some kid toothpaste and some spare toothbrushes and general toiletries. Plus child medication, like children's tylenol and benadryl just in case.
(She doesn't look too nervous, but that could just be her hiding it pretty well as she stands there awkwardly and watches his reaction)

You're very well prepared from what I can see so far. Do you have a designated space outside of a child's reach for the medication?

(She motions to the medicine cabinet) Top shelf of that is out of reach of anyone under 5'3 or 5'4, from what I can tell. I can put stuff on top of it if I end up with someone very abnormally tall for their age? How tall is "outside a child's reach"?
It's alright, nerves get to all of us, myself included.
Some foster guardians decide to put medication in a safe since not all shelves are unscalable and they want to avoid any potential falls, but your solution should be acceptable.
I mean. I could ward it? If.. if they want to make footholds in the drywall, I mean- that's- yeah, I'll probably hear 'em before they get to the top shelf. Unless they do a pull-up on the lower shelf.. in which case that is a very strong kid?
If that is what works for you, then by all means, please do. I'm merely asking questions to make sure that you've thought through how to keep the home safe for a child. So far you are doing quite well.

There's some old duotangs and binders on it, and a cute cat-themed reading lamp. There's a shelf on the back of the desk that has a lot of action figurines and vehicle toys, as well as some smaller plushies. An old-ish PC sits in the middle of the desk.)
I've got a computer in case I get a kid that's in highschool, since it'll probably make their schoolwork a lot easier. It's not hooked up yet and can just be picked up and put back in my closet if I suddenly do get a kid under 13.
(Across from the door, on the back wall, is a bookshelf that seems to be in the shape of a large cartoonish cat holding onto a set of shelves. The bookshelves are pretty well stocked with a good age range of books. There's a robot-themed lamp on the top shelf. A lunchbag sits on top of the whole shelving unit, and a backpack rests to the side of it. Seems like she's prepared to take in a school-aged kid.)
(To the left of the bookshelf is a very colourful bed covered in plenty of sheets and blankets, as well as some plushies. At the foot of the bed is a crib, pushed in the corner, with a baby mobile above it, with both contrast and plenty of colour.)
(There's sliding doors off to the side that open into a closet, which seems to be stocked with clothes and materials for diaper changes.)
Not sure if there's much for me to say. It's got all the same safety precautions as the rest of the apartment and I've done my best to make it comfortable. The crib can be turned into a small toddler bed if needed. The baby mobile should work well across the baby age range. There's a variety of plushies depending on personal tastes and the books cover as much of the age range as I could manage.
(She does actually seem a bit nervous of what he thinks of this room)

I'd seen from the rest of your dwelling that you had an eye for color, but I still was a little worried about the child's room being rather plain. You have no idea how many beige moms I've encountered as an inspector, but this really does seem like an area that a child would enjoy being in.

I've got a baby gate in the entrance area there just in case I end up taking in a baby or toddler. The cabinets have got baby locks too, and there's caps on the oven controls to prevent them from being moved if a kid gets into the kitchen. It's an electric stove, not gas, luckily.
To your right is my room- (she walks over and opens the door) I've got a PC setup in there, my bed, and a closet.. not a whole lot, but the wiring is something I've done my best to safely contain, again in case of a younger kiddo being placed here. I'd be keeping this locked most of the time anyways if I had a small kid, really.
Obviously this here in front of you is the living room. I've put padding on the couch arms because for some reason it was just wood there before and that's not comfortable and can be bumped into.. There's a toybox in that corner and that's my cats' food bowl and dispenser there. And a highchair. I've got two cats, but one of them is in the process of possibly being taken in by a friend who's been wanting a cat. The other one is Fizz. He's sorta trained. Fizz!
