ᴛʜʀᴇᴇ. necessities
"Is this really necessary?"
Ameka's voice was muffled from the black bag thrown over her head. She wasn't cuffed or tied up, just blinded so as to not reveal where they were going. When she forced Matsui to let her meet L, using Kira's identity as leverage, she didn't realize this was what was going to happen to her.
Matsui had taken a few steps back and made a phone call after their conversation, talking wildly and rapidly. The call only lasted a few moments before he snapped the flip phone shut shut, Ameka twiddling her thumbs the entire time. She was attempting to not show the sudden wave of nervousness that washed over her. She was beginning to regret every decision she had ever made, and was debating just running away and forgetting everything she had just said and done. She didn’t think it would actually work.
"L is willing to meet with you." He sounded in disbelief, almost more than Ameka herself. "He's, uh, sending a car soon. We'll wait here together." So they did, standing awkwardly together at the edge of the parking lot. Matsui kept glancing towards Ameka, clearly still tricked into thinking that her previous flirtations were real and not a tactic to get what she wanted. She did the opposite, trying desperately not to look at him for fear of having to face the consequences of her ploys.
It was ten minutes of silent waiting until a black limo pulled in front of them, the windows tinted so deeply that the entire car looked blacked out. Matsui opened one of the back doors and pulled out a black sack, tiny holes in the fabric to create a mesh just tight enough for it to be impossible to see through, but thin enough for one to breathe. Ameka slowly followed him, cautious to not do anything wrong, even if she had never gotten any instructions in the first place.
"You'll have to wear this." Matsui held the bag in front of him with both arms outstretched towards Ameka. He somehow had a wholesome smile on his face, despite the circumstances.
"Are you serious?" Her act had dropped completely, one of her eyebrows twitching in a sudden frustration, a visceral habit.
"Do you want to meet L?" Ameka paused. Was she really willing to put on a blindfold and step into a random car? Just to meet someone whom she knew virtually nothing about?
"Fine." She grabbed the mask and climbed into the backseat of the limo. The front seats were separated by a closed panel from the rest of the vehicle, hiding the driver and possibly someone else in the front seat. After pulling the bag over her head and hearing the door close shut after her, Matsui giving her a cheerful goodbye, she felt the car begin to drive away.
"I'm sorry for any discomfort, Ms Penber." A monotone voice came from the front of the car. Despite the driver having little to no discernible tone and sounding quiet from the multiple blockages between them, Ameka could tell he was older. Much older than Matsui, anyway.
"It's fine..." She grumbled before dropping her covered head on the window next to her. She could almost see herself being driven to the wilderness and getting murdered for her lack of impulse with random people she found behind police stations. She counted the turns and stops they made, trying to be smart in case she had to retrace her steps, though she began to lose track as the minutes ticked on.
In the darkness of the sack over her head, she couldn't tell how much time had passed. Someone could tell her ten minutes and another two hours and she would not be able to discern who was telling the truth. However, after some minor panicking, she felt the car slow to a stop and lurch forward as it was placed into park. Ameka's heart jumped out of her chest as she straightened up, looking towards the direction of the front of the car.
"You may take off the mask, Ms Penber. I am again sorry for any discomfort you may have felt." As she took the bag off, her eyes adjusting to the car around her, she noticed her door being opened by the driver.
He was older, as she anticipated, with a thick grey mustache and matching grey hair. Thin rimmed glasses were tickling the tip of his large nose and a full suit rested on his old yet not so decrepit body. He looked much kinder than Ameka had initially anticipated, and it shocked her to a degree. With how odd and intense the drive was, she was expecting someone who resembled something from a mob, not a sweet-looking old man.
"You may follow me." She stepped out of the limo into what appeared to be a very small parking garage of a hotel. Ameka tucked her hair behind her ear, suddenly aware of how she likely looked. Her bangs were now stringy and stuck to her forehead from sweat and the harsh layers she always cut herself were tangled and frizzy.
She looked down and slowly buttoned her blouse back up, trying to flatten out some of the wrinkles that had grown from sitting. The two made their way into the entrance of the hotel, passing by the front desk without a word and stepping into an elevator. Ameka wanted to ask questions, such as what the older man's name is and where exactly they were, but she refrained. She knew she still had to appear strong and smart, not the scared 21 year old she actually was.
The man scanned a card against a reader in the elevator and clicked on the highest floor after it let out a resounding beep. The elevator suddenly shifted and shot up, sending that familiar sinking feeling through Ameka's body, like her stomach was dropping down to her toes.
Tiny dings filled the silence as they rocketed into the sky. Ameka shifted back and forth on her feet, anxiety flowing through her veins. Once again, she was reciting a script in her head, hoping that the man next to her couldn't see her sporadic mouthing of words.
Somehow both too fast and too slow, the elevator doors opened into a large penthouse suite. Ameka's eyes were stuck to her feet as the doors hissed and the man stepped out, Ameka following directly behind him, her head still not lifting from her shoes.
To say she was now terrified was an understatement. She wanted to turn around and run back down as quickly as possible back to the lobby, not even caring if she was far away from home. She was quickly realizing how terrible of an idea this truly was, but she was there now, and there was not much she could do to stop it. Not anymore.
towel-drying his hair ! ★
⤷ L lawliet x fem!reader
syn. L has trouble taking care of himself when he prioritises his work. it drives you up the wall.
-> 554 words
a soft sigh passes your lips as you crouch down beside L, setting a plate of freshly baked cookies down beside him with a soft clink.
he’s hunched over on the floor in that awful posture of his, knees drawn to his chest, thumb pressed absently to his mouth while grainy surveillance footage flickers across the tv screen. papers litter the floor around him in uneven piles, some half-crumpled, some covered in frantic scribbles only he can decipher.
he looks at the offering on the plate and simply nods in gratitude.
normally, you’d insist he sit at the table with you. eat something more substantial.
a vegetable, perhaps.
but after enough nights spent with L, you’ve learned compromise is the closest thing to victory. this was the only way to get him to eat at all when he became hyperfocused on cases like these.
"eat." you whisper. you lean down to kiss his temple, and the moment your lips brush his skin, damp strands of black hair cling to your mouth.
your expression flattens from that adoring, concerned look to a death glare almost immediately.
L turns his head to you slowly with a wide-eyed look of a man who's well aware of his crimes.
“you said you were going to dry your hair,” your eyes narrow.
“i will,” he replies.
“one hour ago.”
he looks down at the screen again with a tiny huff, picking up a cookie delicately between his thumb and index finger with his typical pinching motion, letting it dangle there before taking a bite.
“are you ignoring me?” you ask, poking the top of his wet head.
“you’ll scold me if i answer,” he says around the mouthful, completely unbothered.
you stare at him for a second in disbelief before exhaling through your nose, pushing his head. “don’t complain to me when you get a headache later.”
then you turn and walk away.
years of detective work have made L exceptionally good at predicting human behavior.
so ten minutes later, you return holding a towel, and it's exactly as he expected.
“was this your plan all along?” you grumble.
you settle onto the couch behind him, and without hesitation, he shifts until he’s comfortably seated between your legs, cheek pressed against your inner thigh while you begin rubbing the towel against his damp hair.
he nods once. completely shameless.
you clamp your knees around his head in punishment.
"ow." he mutters. but doesn't fight back.
“unbelievable.”
L only hums softly, eyes still fixed on the footage playing onscreen as your fingers work through the dark strands. then he tilts his chin backwards far enough to look up at you.
his lips form that natural pout of his that always makes your heart ache unbeknownst to him. big dark eyes. heavy shadows beneath them. round and empty-looking in the way that fools almost everyone into believing there’s nothing behind them at all — you know better.
unfortunately, that doesn’t stop him from looking unbearably adorable.
for a moment, you want to put the towel down, squish his cheeks between your hands and kiss every inch of his stupid face.
instead, still annoyed, you pinch his nose.
his brows twitch.
“do your work,” you grumble, pushing his head forward again.
he doesn't need to respond for you to know he's smiling.

ᴛᴡᴏ. detective
Despite it being late winter in Tokyo, Ameka was sweating bullets as her heeled boots clicked against the pavement.
The cotton fabric of her white button up shirt that she wore to appear more professional was now sticking to her skin as it flapped in the wind. Cars and pedestrians rushed past her, attempting to get to their destinations as quickly as possible, Ameka following suit. She silently recited the script she had planned in her head, slowing as she neared the entrance of the foreboding police department.
She quickly peered into the tall glass windows leading to the lobby, immediately eyeing two female officers at a front desk. Knowing these two would not be as much help as she needed, she kept walking. She needed someone more important, and hopefully someone she could manipulate into doing what she wanted. What she needed. She turned the corner of the building, where fellow travelers no longer trailed around her. The sounds of busy city life slowly dissipated and left her mind quiet as she traveled farther into the dark crevices of an alleyway.
Her clacking footsteps slowed to a stop once she made it towards the back of the building, where a parking lot littered with minimal cars stood. An odd sight for the usually bustling police department. Listening out for any form of life, she heard a gentle, male voice talking rapidly and decided to peek around the corner.
A tall and quite young man with dark hair and happy, innocent eyes was speaking into his cellphone. Ameka couldn't make out exactly what he was saying, but from his suit and tie and the small shine of a concealed carry resting on his hip, she had a good idea that he was possibly a detective. Or, he could at least point her in a better direction towards one.
She straightened up and looked down, unbuttoning a few of the buttons of her shirt to let her flashy, bright pink lace bra peek out before flattening her hair. As much as she hated it, it would be easier to complete the task at hand if she made herself appear more attractive, especially considering he was a younger man.
She heard his phone flip close and his footsteps echo through the parking lot. With this, she took it as her sign to begin the task at hand, jogging towards him with no hesitation.
"Excuse me, sir?" He turned around swiftly, eyes widening slightly as he watched her bound over to him, holding a large brown purse tightly to her side to stop it from sliding off her shoulder.
"Is-Is everything alright?" Ameka placed a bright smile on her face.
"Sir, are you a detective?" She made her voice high and airy, keeping her hands tucked and tied together behind her back to appear as cutesy as she could possibly manage. She could almost hear him gulp as he scratched the back of his neck.
"Why, yes I am." His attempt to sound confident fell short as he laughed awkwardly from the nerves suddenly enveloping him. This was easier than Ameka had expected.
"Well, that's good. You're working on the Kira case, yes?" The nervousness that was previously attributed to being near a pretty woman suddenly shifted within him.
"Who-Who's asking?" He stuttered out.
"I'm Ameka. Ameka Penber." She stuck her hand out towards him. The false surname was a quick addition, and she mentally cursed herself for choosing something so idiotic. A detective would likely know Penber's last name, even ones who appeared a bit incompetent. Ameka prepared herself for rejection, her hand sitting idle in the cold wind as it whipped around the sweat lingering on her slender fingers.
"I am... detective Matsui." Despite his initial hesitations, the man took her hand in his, shaking it gently. Ameka let out a shallow breath as quietly as she could. Her plan was still working. "Would you like to make an official report about Kira? The entrance to the station is on the other side." He pointed towards the way the raven-haired woman had just come out of.
"Oh, well, I was hoping to speak to someone on the Task Force. I have information that I think would do the case very well." Matsui, though still entranced by Ameka's looks, was becoming skeptical. She lowered her head and looked up, fluttering her lashes significantly.
"Well, I am on the Task Force." He cringed internally as he said it. He knew he shouldn't have, but a primal part of him needed to impress this girl. Ameka gasped and jumped up, squealing like a teenager meeting her favorite celebrity. She was playing the part perhaps too flamboyantly, though Matsui seemed to still be buying it.
"Oh, my goodness! How lucky am I to find a detective on the Task Force? And a cute one, at that!" She played up the theatrics even more, feeling him get wrapped around her finger. Matsui silently gawked, though he was still trying to play it off as cooly as he possibly could.
"So, what can I do for you Ms Penber." Ameka licked her pink lips and shuffled back into place, a gentle smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.
"I'd like to speak with detective L. I know who Kira is." She dropped her act, lowering her eyes and voice back down to their natural states. Matsui audibly gasped in shock, stepping back away from Ameka. The woman stood tall, still smiling. Taking a deep breath, he straightened up and adjusted his tie, attempting to appear unfazed by Ameka's request.
"You, uh, you can't just talk to L."
"Even if I know who Kira is?" The name almost seemed like a bullet to the heart, Matsui jumping out of his skin as soon as she said it again. As if even speaking the name would summon him.
"Do you mean you have an idea of who Kira is? Because, we already have a lot of leads..."
"No, I know who he is." Ameka's voice came out sharper than she intended, her stubbornness holding strong against Matsui. He looked around from side to side, and one of his hands rested on the buckle of his belt, the other still tightly gripping his cellphone.
"Well, I guess I can take your report then." Ameka shook her head slowly.
"I'll only tell detective L." Now, Matsui was beginning to become irritated. Not to mention, this was beginning to sound more like this girl wanted to meet L, not actually catch Kira. Ameka knew she was coming on strong, but she had more tricks up her sleeve to break Matsui.
"I don't have the jurisdiction to do that..."
"I thought you said you were on his Task Force. Are you lying to me?" She crossed her arms together in a huff and a whine, simultaneously pushing her breasts up. It was accidental, but it was helpful nonetheless.
"No, no, Miss, I'm not lying..." He sighed deeply and pinched the bridge of his nose. "L is a very careful man, I can't just bring you to him. What if you're Kira?" It was less of an accusation than it was a reasoning.
"If I was Kira then meeting him wouldn't be an issue, seeing as Kira needs a name and a face. I would only have one." Matsui's eyes almost popped out of his head. The general public was not yet made aware of these details of Kira. Ameka almost smiled at his shock, but she kept her footing.

ᴏɴᴇ. funerals
This was the worst pain Ameka Misora had ever felt.
It was worse than when she was stung by a bee for the first time at five years old, screaming as her mother pulled the stinger out in what, at the time, was excruciating pain. It was worse than when she crashed her bike into a bush at twelve and had to get stitches on her upper thigh, leaving thick, dark scars no matter how much healing it went through. It was worse than her first break up at seventeen with a guy she thought she would spend the rest of her life with, and it was worse than every break up that followed.
No, the worst pain of all was sitting with her sobbing mother as they lowered a casket that had no body inside of it into the ground.
Funerals were not something Ameka was used to at the age of 21. She had only been to two before this, the first being her great grandmother's, but she was so young and was not close with woman, so the funeral was in reality a dreary play date with her cousins. Not to mention, an 89 year old woman dying after living a long and prosperous life was not unusual and quite expected.
What was unusual and grossly unexpected was a 27 year old former FBI agent who was planning on starting a family going missing, presumed dead, immediately after her fiancé was killed by a monstrous serial killer. Naomi Misora had more life to live, but it was cut short. No one truly knew if she had died or not, but after days of her body not being found, and the assumption that the death of her fiancé drove her to a rash decision, she was pronounced dead by suicide.
The thought drove Ameka's long yet unmanicured nails deep into her palms, leaving half-moon dents in their place. Ameka had her own feelings about what had happened. She knew her sister would not have killed herself. She knew that something more nefarious had happened.
Despite Naomi no longer being an FBI agent, her fiancé, Raye Penber, told her many details about the case — Kira's case — that he was following. Specifically, the events leading up to his death. Following a lead suspect onto a bus, which turned into a bus jacking, which ended in Raye Penber showing his real badge to the supposed suspect he was following, and then mere days later his heart attack induced death.
It was easy for Naomi to recognize that whomever Raye Penber showed his badge to was indeed Kira, knowing that he needed only a name and a face. All of this information was relayed to Ameka right after Raye's death, even if it was supposed to be hidden from the general public. One could argue that the sister and almost sister-in-law of FBI agents was not the general public.
The two sisters were sitting in Naomi's childhood room, cups of lemon tea and their mother's food scattered on the floor between them. The older sister was doing quite well despite her circumstances, and she was attempting to organize the information spinning endlessly inside her head. Ever since Ameka was old enough to understand, Naomi explained the things she did with the FBI to her. It was dangerous, and in most cases illegal, but Naomi trusted her sister with her life. Not to mention, what could a young girl with little to no friends even do with this information?
"I need to speak with L. He was the one who sent Raye and the other FBI agents to follow the suspects. He knows who the suspects are." Naomi swirled her pointer finger along the rim of her half empty tea cup, deep in thought.
"Who is this 'L' again?" The words came out sneering. Ameka, despite never having met him, already did not like this L character, knowing that he was the one who sent her sister's fiancé to his death. It seemed Naomi did not reciprocate these harsh feelings, much to Ameka's dismay. Though, she would never vocalize this with her newly grieving sister.
"He's a detective. The best detective. I worked with him when I was still an agent. If I can get into contact with him, or with anyone on the Task Force, I can give them the information I have. Then they can finally catch Kira." Ameka smiled and rubbed her older sister's clothed shoulder, still black from the small funeral for Raye they had just attended. Ameka's second funeral, and unbeknownst to her, not her last.
"He would be proud of you for being so strong." Naomi looked up through her downturned lashes, tears stinging her dark and tired eyes. A hint of a smile grew on her face, the first time it had happened since Raye's death. Without a word she wrapped Ameka into a hug, so tightly and aggressively that the two fell onto the floor in a fit of laughter.
That was the memory that played in Ameka's head over and over as her mother cried in the living room.
Kicking off her black heels, Ameka raced into her own childhood bedroom and slammed the door shut. Despite it making her feel like a horrible daughter, she couldn't bear to comfort her mother once more. She already had to when her father died, and now this? She squeezed her eyes shut and let out a shuddering breath. What would Naomi do? The question swirled in her brain.
Still in her funeral attire, Ameka sat on her bed. Her fully black hair, dress, and tights contrasted against her pink ruffled comforter and stuffed animals that littered the bed. The bedroom was still decorated from when she was a teenager, never growing up with her. She never cared to update it as she got older, convincing herself that doing so would solidify the fact that she had no plans of moving out.
She flipped open her laptop and began typing, opening every article and forum she could find about Kira.
Naomi Misora did not kill herself. Not after everything she told Ameka. She was planning on solving her fiancé's murder, not becoming another statistic. One of the ideas Naomi had was that Kira could kill using methods other than heart attacks, something the general media (and Raye) negated without a thought. Ameka, without a doubt, now knew this to be the truth, and it was her entry into solving her sister's death when no one else tried too. Even their own mother accepted the explanation the police decided on.
As she scrolled, the same name (or letter, one could say) kept popping up. L. An alias for the world's best detective. While Ameka knew that Naomi respected and admired the surreptitious man, she felt differently. In her fiery and grief-littered anger, she saw him as just the same as Kira. They did not kill the same, nor for the same reason, but in her eyes, they both saw people as dispensable and replaceable. Everyone was just pawns in their game of chess.
What they didn't know, was that a third player entered the board, and she was going to win no matter what it took.
