Initially, the image that is attached to this post came to my attention as a post for those in ED recovery with the intention of telling people that they do not need to obsess over calories and to eat the foods their bodies need.
Today, the image came to my attention as a FA post, with the context of Nutrition Facts labels being âshamefulâ and âtriggeringâ to âpeople of size.â
First of all, people need to learn that a trigger is NOT something that offends you, makes you angry, or makes you upset. A trigger is something that causes flashbacks to a traumatic event, spikes anxiety levels (and potentially causing a panic attack), causes a person to shut down, or causes a person to leave a situation before or as any of the aforementioned things start to happen.
Secondly, letâs just say for a minute here that calories donât matter. You can eat as many damned calories as you want. Without a Nutrition Facts label, how will you know if the food you are about to eat is going to give you the vitamins and minerals that your body needs? How will you know if there is not enough protein, too much sodium, whether or not the item is high in vitamin A, C, or D? How will you know if the item has healthy fats, or is loaded saturated fats and/or trans fats? The Nutrition Facts labels on foods isnât there to tell you that you shouldnât be eating something, it is literally there to give you vital information on what is in the food item you are about to consume.
