The stars in your eyes

“Maybe that’s your way to fame, make a magical cure for it.” She waved her hands, mocking slightly. “I love a party, i’m not a killjoy. But this whole thing is just a little… cliche for me.”

“Well, I do love magic and science. Maybe I should consider it,” she said with a small laugh. “Oh, I get you. I enjoy a couple of drinks but yeah, cliche isn’t my thing either. I would much rather be in a more chill setting.”

“You’d think they’d thought about a way to stop us sneezing. A charm or something.” She sniffed, rubbing her eyes and trying not to smudge her mascara. “Mermaids?” She asked. “Sirens maybe? Nemo?” She continued to joke. “Oh god yes, my whole family are here… and i am going to be drinking champagne.” 

“I’m a doctor and a witch and still have hayfever. Granted not that kind of doctor but still,” she laughed, wrinkling her nose. “Maybe they’d make a banner with every kind of mythical sea creature.” She laughed. “Have you ever seen my mother drink. Hide from her.”

“Yeah, well I’m about to be cast as a single white female, so dramatic is about right,” she replied with a scoff, contemplating places that would be nice to retire to and avoid everything. Tropical island with no cell reception and wifi sounded good right about now, a real 180 from the girl who complained about the lack of wifi in a cafe just the week before. You’re an idiot, Cami. She cast a brief gaze at the woman she’d inadvertently spoken to, and shrugged, not exactly inclined to force someone on her spiral downwards. 

“Fine by me, more for me.” she replied lightly before downing the last remnants of her cocktail as the bartender came over and she ordered another. “And that’s fine, but I don’t have a cat to go home to I have an empty apartment, social media and no self control so looks like I’m going for the ultimate distraction until I find some semblance of it once more. Or come up with an escape plan, either works.”

Amara was naturally flirty and affectionate towards people, that had always been just part of her. Though she had never really had too many relationships. Maybe it was her magic made her a little distant or maybe she just didn’t need it in her life but she was often content in her own company or around close friends. “No? It’s what you decide to make it. You can decide to make it a negative thing or you can be a strong independent woman?” she shrugged. 

“You can do whatever you feel you need to but it should be for you.” She raised a brow. “Escape plan? Are we in some action movie now?”

“Hey, if that’s the case then,” Lana said with a broadening grin as she shifted, facing the other a little more and crossing her one leg over the other. “– flirt away. I’ve never been afraid of a little alcohol laced flirting, why don’t I buy you a drink? Or if you’re feeling a little extra spcy we could do a shot.” A slender brow arched as Lana tilted her head, mischief and amusement touching her blue gaze.

Amara grinned, glad to see the woman was as bold as she was. “Yeah? Flirting is fun and I feel good.” She nodded. “Gosh, I don’t think I’ve done a shot since college,” she laughed at herself. “Okay, surprise me.”

Kora stops in her tracks, glancing back at the other womans sudden question. Did she believe in magic? Yes, in all its many forms. The wolf nods her head. Maybe this witch was new to magic, she could not be sure - but she could sense a power within her. “I believe in a lot of things.  But magic especially, I’ve witnessed both create and destroy in equal measures.” Some believe it to be magics very curse that kept her bound to a wolf and enthralled by the moon. “I believe in faeries too, but many think that’s just silly.”

Amara had grew up around magic, she was proud of her magic and all of its quirks. Even the hard parts were a part of her. She was always intrigued how others outside of that world saw magic, especially other supernatural creatures. “Hmm, you and me both. I’ve seen the good an bad of it.” She shook her head. “No, I believe they are very old magic.”

“Well, tarot isn’t exactly our strong suit,” Kora laughs gently. “but we do have a shelf in the back with a handful of different decks and books on the craft.” She might not know much about the art of telling ones future - but the wolf respects it. “Here, I’ll show you where its at.” At her offer, Kora walks out from behind the front desk, gesturing for the woman to follow her down one of the isles. 

Amara smiled gently at the offer. “That’s okay, I didn’t think it would be. I just was avoiding my aunt but I’ll suck it up and go get some from her.” She was a witch, she knew about the craft well. She couldn’t get something out of her mind she’d seen and thought the cards might help ease it. “Do you believe in magic?” she found herself asking.

Daryn kept his dark eyes on the witch, the cold air was blowing towards them although he could barely feel it. “I don’t see the point. We both know what we are. Why play games?” He wasn’t like many of his kind, he didn’t enjoy games. “Like what?” She asked curiously, now wondering what she meant. 

“Hmm, I don’t know. I think mortals often play games. Whether that be for power, to manipulate...  because of boredom,” she rambled, giving a shrug of her shoulders. “Like what?” she repeated, laughing a little. “Forward again.” She absentmindedly fiddled with the gloves covering her hands, almost like her comfort. “Everything. People feel a lot of things, so there’s a lot to feel.”

“I most definitely am.” He replied simply, he had no interest in being anything but an open book and he remained stoic. “No? Is that your intuition as a woman or a witch?” He started to walk. “Daryn. You may call me Daryn.” 

“Fair enough, I appreciate honesty,” she replied, pushing her hands into her pockets. “Hmm, you know I’m a witch? You really don’t hold back, do you?” She walked beside him, eyes glancing to him. “Probably both. Mainly the witch thing. I... sense a lot of things.” She nodded. “Pleasure, Daryn.”

Daryn’s lips twitched, although not quite smiling. “I can imagine.” He said once again, his eyes still looking back into the darkness behind the young witch. “There is no reason to trust me. But the choice seems simple to me. Either walk with the company of a stranger or uh…” he paused again, sure that he could see movement. “Walk with the company of whatever lurks in the shadows.” 

“Are you humouring me?” she asked, glancing back at him. “Hmm, okay fair. And maybe I am crazy, but walking with you feels like the safer option. And... my uh, feelings aren’t often wrong.” She could feel something, and she wanted to get away from it. “I’m Amara, by the way. Stops us being complete strangers.”

“Maybe she’s a little chilly.” he joked, his eyes scanning the dark once more. Although there was no sign of movement. “At work…” it seemed dull and there seemed to be no reason anyone would be interested in the young witch. “I am sure you have nothing to worry about. But i can escort you to your door if you’d prefer.” 

“Hmm, funny,” she replied, though a small smile moved on the corners of her lips. “Yes, at my clinic. Just... it’s intense sometimes,” Mara sighed, glancing out across the path and then back to him. “How do I know I can trust you?”

Daryn was resting on the edge of the building waiting for his brother. He seemed to find himself pulling the younger vampires out of all sorts of trouble lately. When he heard the voice speak to him his attention was drawn away. Mostly due to the accent. He looked back at the dark street. “Potentially. A young woman. Perhaps another witch.” His eyes flicked over the girl. “Where have you been today?” He wondered if the witch had been up to something she shouldn’t have. 

Amara composed herself, pulling her bag strap over her shoulder. She hadn’t noticed the man at first and tried to smile, she didn’t want to seem crazy. “I can usually sense another witch... it didn’t feel like that. It felt colder,” she said, pausing a moment. “Where have I been? At work.”
