Cricket's guide to the Evolution of Modern Dragons
(Its a long post so be warned)
Prescorching
Draco Primus (Pre-scorching)- The first modern dragon chronologically (That we know of). Had about the same intellegence as modern dragons, and could come in many colors. Most resembles a modern day skywings, but smaller. Social, but did not form large tribes like modern dragons do. They tended to get killed by scavengers as they formed large groups. Draco Primus went extict due to competition from later appering species. It could breath fire.
Draco comoalto (Pre-scorching)- Named for its large sprawling body plan, Comoalto had similar fire abilities as its fore-father, but a longer neck and stronger limbs. Comoalto lived in groups of a hundred or so dragons but had no govermental force. They too went extinct, their final "true" population (which lived in what is now modern sky kingdom) was killed by invaiding humans and was one of the main reasons (apart from Draco Planus's extinction). That sky kingdom celebrates the scorching each year to honor the revenge they took for their fallen ansestors.
Draco Planus (Pre-scorching)- Named for it's compact body plan, these dragons focused most of their energy into speed and movement. The dragon populations were severed after a scavenger raid, and genetic drift soon occured, making the surving dragons unrecognizable from eachother in just a couple generations. Only a third of these dragons had fire abilities, the rest opting as close range preditors.
Draco Plicatus (Pre-scorching)- Named for their folded down wing shape unique to this group, Plicatus was a powerhouse of a dragon that formed tight nit social connections. These dragons out of all dragons (possibly ever) had to most interraction with scavengers, attacking any of them they could find. They kept their fire abilities, and became extremely skilled at using their breath in their combat.
Draco Veneno (Pre-scorching)- These dragons had venom glands in their teeth that was deadly apon bite (though they could not spray them like rainwings) They lived near the rainforest and dessert areas, and were known to be the most scholarly of all dragons (alive at the time), and had a close relationship with nature. Most dragons either had venom or fire in this species, but never both, as the glands needed to preduce venom were modified fire glands. (But soon some dragons were born with venom glands in their tails)
Draco Aquacalans (Pre-scorching)- Dragons that lived on islands and hunted their prey in the waters. This allowed them to grow larger in number then most other dragons, as scavengers (dragons main hunters) as well as other dragons tended to get a bit nervous with water. These were later out competed by Seawings, and went extint shortly after their introduction.
Draco Nocternus (Pre-scorching)- Not much is known about these night-dwelling dragons, except for the (still famous) mythological/historic charecter, the mountain dragon (sometimes refered to as "Mountainwing" though that name is debatable) who is granted the blessings of prophacy and mindreading by the moon godess. It is likely that they had fire.
_________
Post scorching
Draco Palus- Known as Mudwings, these dragons are offshoots of Pilicactus, inheriting their fire and folded down wings. These dragons helped heavily with the scorching. They are also known for some of their dragons fire-proof scales. Queen Topaz was their first queen, which unified them as a tribe. Mudwings have extremely close relationships with their siblings, so they natrually adapted to communal city living.
Draco Caelus- Known as Skywings, these dragons have inheritited a powerful fire abilty and amazing strength. They were one of the main tribes responcable for the scorching (especially the choice of name). The Skywings first Queen was named Queen Fulmar.
Draco Stiricus- As Plicatus moved up north to evade scavengers, fire became less and less of an effective tool. One genetic mutation became so widespread it prevented the death of all ice-dwelling tribes, ice breath. This one trait allowed these dragons, now called Icewings, to use their impressive breath aim for something more effective in the cold. Their first queen called herself Queen Permafrost. These dragons did not participate in the scorching as no scavenger could reach their kingdom without dying.
Draco Scarabaeus (Extinct but modern) - Known as Beetlewings, these dragons had the ability to produce silk and venom in their teeth and claws (as they were desendants of Draco Veneno). These dragons fled to Pantala following the assasination of Queen Falcon of the Skywings, along with their cosins the Leafwings, they were later out bred by the hivewings and silkwings.
Draco Scorpio- The modern day Sandwing has two fire sacks, one in the tail modified for venom. This allowed early Sandwings to have venom and fire unlike their Veneno parents who could only have one (and sometimes neither). They participated in the scorching by the request of their queen, Queen Hearth.
Draco Folium- The Leafwings, having inherited neither fire nor poison used their intellegence and connection to nature to commune with plants and make deadly poisons from scratch. They participated in the scortching with their Queen, Queen Ironwood. They later fled with to Pantala with the Beetlewings.
there are two subtypes of Leafwings, sapwings and poisonwings. Both have cultural diffrences, and sapwings tend to be lighter color, but no real physical diffrences.
Draco Muto- The Rainwings had modified venom spitting teeth and color changing scales. They participated in the scortching out of nessesity because of the violence of scavangers, their queen at the time was Queen Boa.
Draco resperitoaqua- The Seawings had gained the ability to breath underwater and glowing scales that allowed them to form societies underwater. They participated in the scortching commanded by Queen Mako.
There are several suptypes of seawings
Reef-type: thoughs that live near the reefs tend to be more colorful, Queen coral appears to have some reef-type dna.
River-type: Brakish water seawings that tend to live in insular communities, tend to have more green-brown coloring and less frills due to mudwing intermixing.
Open Ocean-type: standard seawing type, extremely common and mostly shades of blue and sometimes green.
Draco Pythonicus- Nightwings gained both mind-reading and/or future sight if their eggs were exposed to moons during hatching. Which meant most nightwing couples planned to have their eggs hatch on certain nights. Nightwings participated in the scortching, though Queen Silversight was not thrilled with the whole ideal.
Draco Alveus- With the introduction of Clearsight to Pantala, Clearsight's nightwing genetics hybridised with the beetlewings to become the Hivewings, who could possibly inherrit some venom abilities. Their first queen was Queen Pompilid.
Draco Papilio- Another species popping up around the time of Clearsight was the Silkwings, inherriting the ability of silk making from the Beetlewings. Silkwings have a chance to be flamesilks, dragons with fire imbeded into their silk.
There are two types of Silkwing
Moth-type: These dragons have duller colors and potentially fluff on their neck.
Butterfly-type: These dragons have bright magestic colors
