My personal headcanon is that Sonic first turned super on the death egg in Sonic 2.
He watched the Tornado get gunned down with just an 8 year old piloting it. And now he's face to face with the mad doctor that shot Tails down.
Was Sonic mad at himself for letting that happen, letting Tails join along? Was he mad at Robotnik for shooting him down?
It doesn't matter, because now Sonic has the unlimited power and wrath of a god.
