NARA–Two ancient wooden sticks unearthed here were likely used as dice, strengthening the theory that government officials played a kind of “sugoroku” board game during the Nara Period (710-784), archaeologists said.

The sticks were discovered in 2008 in a trash pit near the ruins of a government office that guarded the Heijokyu palace and other buildings, the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties said June 28 in its bulletin for 2016.

SAN FRANCISCO — The ancient Mayan civilization collapsed due to a century-long drought, new research suggests.

Minerals taken from Belize’s famous underwater cave, known as the Blue Hole, as well as lagoons nearby, show that an extreme drought occurred between A.D. 800 and A.D. 900, right when the Mayan civilization disintegrated. After the rains returned, the Mayans moved north — but they disappeared again a few centuries later, and that disappearance occurred at the same time as another dry spell, the sediments reveal.

In Mesopotamia gods were thought to be physically present in the materials and experiences of daily life. Enlil, considered the most powerful Mesopotamian god during most of the third millennium B.C., was a “raging storm” or “wild bull,” while the goddess Inanna reappeared in different guises as the morning and evening star. Deities literally inhabited their cult statues after they had been animated by the proper rituals, and fragments of worn statues were preserved within the walls of the temple.

This standing figure, with clasped hands and a wide-eyed gaze, is a worshiper. It was placed in the “Square Temple” at Tell Asmar, perhaps dedicated to the god Abu, in order to pray perpetually on behalf of the person it represented. For humans equally were considered to be physically present in their statues. Similar statues were sometimes inscribed with the names of rulers and their families. (MET)

J’Son had only just met the wandering Terran but he suddenly felt responsible for him. He appeared lost despite his in-depth knowledge of the ruins surrounding the city. But the man knew more about the dead then the living. So when the authorities showed up and began to ask about traveling licenses and dig permits, J’Son felt compelled to distract them before they discovered just how clueless Jackson was.

So J’Son slid over and pulled the stunned man into a massive hug, proclaiming some partnership between them. Some sort of lie about a friendship. Out of the corner of his eye he watched the two officials fidget impatiently.

"You almost left your permits with me," he pulled out one of his many forgeries, showing them first to the stupified human and then to the meddling men who studied them for too long before returning the papers, glaring and going on their way.

And despite Earth’s limited technology somehow they ended up all over the place. And inevitably he found them and aided them. He could only attribute it to his affection for Meredith and his son.

"Jason," he said simply giving the man a nod of greeting as they moved away from the ruins. "That," he pointed to the officials, "Was the local militarized religion. They tend to get testy about aliens touching anything old around here. That is unless you have permission from the higher reigning goddess which,” he shook the papers at him, “I just so happened to have.”

He’d been poking around the site as well, looking for something in particular for a client.

He cleared his throat uncomfortably, but he was never one to avoid an introduction. "Daniel," he offered, glancing behind them again. The guards were shuffling away, getting back on their transports. One of them was talking into a comm device of some sort, glancing their way. It made Daniel uneasy.

"So," he said, turning back around as they walked. "You still haven't told me where we're going." He wasn't directly avoiding the question, but he wasn't eager to let this stranger know why he was traipsing an alien planet. He also wasn't keen on leaving right away, but crawling over ruins wasn't exactly a luxury he had anymore. He was disconcerted enough that the man knew on sight that he was from earth. That was something he would definitely need to work on if he wanted to keep a low profile.

The man beside him was obviously an alien to him. But was he an earth-descendant, like so many other people Daniel had met across the galaxy? Or something more? Daniel couldn't put his finger on it, but something about the stranger seemed... not off, per se, but certainly otherworldly.

"Fine," he whispered, not entirely convinced, but he crept as quietly as he could, trying to stay low. It wasnt' exactly his forte, and he found his steps, quiet as they were, ten times louder than Teal'c's.

"Where are we going?" he whispered, trying to stay close.
