Jennifer S. Cheng, from So We Must Meet Apart
[Text ID: Maybe what Iāve been trying to say all this time, as an explanation and apology, is that I sense a mass of white noise in front of my face wherever I go. It stands between me and the world, between me and other people. More and more I am finding myself lost in it, unable to make it through to the other side.]
Be sad but get up. You donāt have to shower. You can put on the same clothes you wore yesterday. Nobody will care. The sky is blue, wildflowers are blooming by the side of the road. Strangers have stories to tell. Go for a walk, go for a drive, go to a greenhouse, a bookstore, a movie theater. You can stay in bed but nothing is going to happen there. Sometimes youāve really just got to get the fuck up.
Dr. Martens ad, 1988
I [forgive] myself for loving
those who have harmed me Ā Ā for cooking them dinner & burning the rice Ā Ā forgetting to add pepper Ā Ā or make myself a plate Ā Ā I [forgive] myself for staying Ā Ā I [forgive]
myself for staying Ā Ā Ā until I left my skin

You should live free, and Iām not talking about free to walk alone without people watching you. Iām talking about free in your mind and in your heart. From things that have happened in your life. One day.

Because traumatized people often have trouble sensing what is going on in their bodies, they lack a nuanced response to frustration. They either react to stress by becoming āspaced outā or with excessive anger. Whatever their response, they often canāt tell what is upsetting them. This failure to be in touch with their bodies contributes to their well-documented lack of self-protection and high rates of revictimization and also to their remarkable difficulties feeling pleasure, sensuality, and having a sense of meaning.
