You have a nice life, you have a good job that makes enough money to get by and live in a nice home. But theres one issue.

Your husband Harvey. He INSISTS on getting some sort of job but it never works out, he tried being a show host, got fired before the show even aired, tried doing a radio show, didn’t even go on air, tried doing a normal job like working at a grocery store but he quit after one day because it felt so miserable, but fair enough you guess. But now he wants to set up some booth where people poke HIM and THEY get money and somehow he gets paid? Makes no sense but he swears it does. He wants to be a good person, an admirable trait lots of people lack nowadays but something about it feels…wrong. You can’t put your finger on it, but it doesn’t feel right.

The other day he pestered you so much about it you just said yes so he’d stop giving you those big puppy eyes and following you around asking about it. But before he left you just had to stop this.

“Harvey, this doesn’t feel like a good idea, I have a bad feeling about this and I don’t want you doing it. We are fine with my income alone, you don’t need to do all of this” you let out in one breath. Your husband sighs like he was afraid this would happen.

“Please, I’m trying to be useful, I feel terrible lazing around the house while you work all the time giving us the life we get to have, I can’t even do a regular job I need to at least try” he turns back to you completely, your hand still on his arm, the blazer wrinkling slightly from your grip.

“But you don’t “laze around” you take care of the house, you cook and bake just because you want to, you take care of Toby when I’m not here, you do more than you think” you pull him closer and away from the door “You don’t need to get all dressed up and go out there and potentially hurt yourself because you can’t see your own value”

He’s not even looking you in the eyes, is he mad at yo- no. Is he..crying? Why is he crying? Is he really upset about this job thing? Why is he-

Before you could finish your thought, his arms are around your waist, embracing you, his head on your shoulder as soft sniffles can be heard. You hate when he’s like this, he’s always been an emotional man, which you love, but it makes you so sad when he crumbles into a puddle of tears. You return the embrace lovingly, not a word to be said by you, not at the moment.

“*sniffle* I’m sorry— I just wanted to help out and bring in more income for us, I know we’re fine but I want us to be more than just fine and I’m sorry I can’t do that for you!” It’s so heartbreaking, he doesn’t deserve this guilt, not one bit

“Oh, Harvey— you poor thing.. I know you want to help, but that’s more stress for you, and me. You don’t need to get a job, not being a show host or doing a radio show, or working at a miserable grocery store or standing behind a silly booth giving people money we have for “clicking” you”

you reply, barely above a whisper, the sniffles coming from him become more frequent, occasionally small sobs into your shoulder, you move him off of you and take him to the couch that’s a room away, you sit down with him and continue the tight embrace. You take his head off your shoulder so you’re face to face with those icy blue eyes, clumped together with tears, running down his face and making his eyes glassy looking. And- is he wearing your eyeliner? That doesn’t matter right now. You’re so focused on his tear(and eyeliner?) stained face. You give him a soft, reassuring smile and use your thumb to wipe the tears off his face, he can’t help but give a weak smile in return. You give him a soft kiss on the forehead and re-adjust your positions so you’re laying on your back and his head lies on your chest, he looks up with tears still running down his face

“I love you, Harvey I don’t care what job you have or want to have, or if you ever want a job again. And honestly I’d prefer you not to, because you’re too trusting. You let people tear you down and destroy you because you want to be nice. You are too nice for your own good. You’d probably let someone stab you or smack you over the head with a hammer and youd apologize”

you giggle at your own remark, Harvey on the other hand lets out a noise that’s between a grunt and a sigh. You laugh softly and put a hand on his back and use your other hand to push his head back down onto your chest, maybe he’ll forget all about this, or at the very least never ask to do some stupid job like that ever agiain.

You could lay there with him for hours, maybe you have. At some point Toby emerges and asks why daddy’s face has black streaks on it, you both can’t help but giggle at the question, you tell him that he got into your makeup, which made Harvey stop laughing to give you his attempt at an angry face, but honestly his face is too pretty to take that seriously, now Toby laughs as he goes back to playing with his toy dinosaurs

After some more silence you speak again

“Harvey, do we need to buy you your own eyeliner so you don’t get into mine?” He sighs and nods, burying his face in your neck, potentially because hes embarrassed. But that’s okay, youd do anything for him, especially to keep him safe
