A fact I’m still getting over: just about a month ago, I self published my first book!

The young Abigail Winters teams up with the mysterious Dr Edgar Caurinus, to stop a terrible plague that spawns monsters which feed off the suffering of those stricken with the sickness. The two of them must work together to save her home town and those she holds dear, before it spreads.

I never realised how cathartic it would feel to write an autistic character, having lived with autism most of my life. Just being able to express about the following:

• Stimming

• Special interests

• Getting passionate and worked up about special interests

• People not getting why you get so worked up about your special interests

• Overstimulation

• Missing social cues

• Knowing something about you is different, but not quite understanding what and you’re just left wondering what you’re doing wrong

• Meeting someone else with autism

• Learning to realise that you are different and there’s nothing wrong with you

I really hope that, for people who read about this character, they’ll be able to see themselves in her.
