Charlie waited at the bar for her dad. This was going to be an important discussion, just as the hands the night before had been. She needed to talk with him, to make him understand her viewpoint. Heβd been sequestering himself for the last few months. Charlie had given him space for that time. Now, it was time for him to settle his mind and help like heβd promised.
She was starting to think that he wouldnβt show when a portal opened up and her dad walked through. Charlie cringed. He looked rough. Bloodshot eyes, rough hair, rumpled clothesβ¦ He definitely hadnβt slept for a while. In his hands was a book with numerous loose papers.
βDad? Are you okay?β she asked. Charlie stood from her stool to help him over to the bar when he waved her off. He stumbled over to the bar and sat down. She sat back down next to him. Janine, thank goodness, didnβt come over. She had great bartender instincts. Charlie continued, βWhat do you have there?β
βCharlie, I have been scraping and searching forΒ anythingΒ related to deals and soul pacts,β he said unceremoniously. βI think I found an answer.β
Surprised, she queried, βReally?β
βYes!β He opened the book to a page covered in blood. βSee here?β There was a caricature of a body having its soul sucked out and ripped to pieces. βWe need to sacrifice someone to break the connection. Itβs a personal contract, so one of you needs to be the sacrifice.β
Charlie saw where this was going. βYou want to sacrifice Alastor to break the contract?β
βYes!β Her dad stabbed the paper with a finger. An image of all of them standing around a cross, Alastor hanging by his tendons and intestines in a bloody display played over the image. There were xβs in his eyes and simple black rings that didnβt look like their rings vanished from their fingers. Then they all danced around Alastorβs corpse. Letting the image fade, he said, βYou can be free! Then you and your Angel, uhm, Vagatha, can get married! Without him!β
βΒ DadΒ β¦β Charlie sighed as she rubbed her head. βWeβre already going to be married.β
βWith that incredibly pompous loser Alastor,β her dad added lightly.
βI know that youβreβ¦uhmβ¦upset about this. But Iβm making progress with Alastor!β
ββProgressβ? What do you mean βprogressβ?β
Charlie said emphatically, βI think he cares about us! I think thereβs a decent person in there that needs help.β
βThere you go, self-sacrificing again.β He grabbed Charlie by the arms. βWhen will you be selfish and admit that you donβt deserve this!Β VagathaΒ doesnβt deserve this!β
βVaggie is with me on this!β Charlie said with perfect faith. She was certain that Vaggie now saw it too, that there was someone in Alastor trying to break out of the shell that heβd created around him.
Now her dad was shaking her. βYou two are going to waste your lives onΒ oneΒ soul, oneΒ unrepentant MONSTERΒ !β Then he paused. He let go of her as he murmured, βI get it now.β His fingers reached for the ring he couldnβt see. βThose rings must be doing something to you.β
Charlie admitted with a so-so gesture, βI canβt say that I know one way or the other.β Then, a lightbulb moment. βYou know what? I donβt even care.β
Her dadβs jaw dropped. βΒ WHATΒ ?!β
βYes! I donβt care!β Charlie jumped from her seat. βIf I can save evenΒ one soulΒ , I consider it worth it. IβmΒ breaking throughΒ ! I just need more ti-β
βDAMMIT CHARLIE, I DONβT WANT TO LOSE YOU!β Then her dad did something that sheβdΒ neverΒ seen: he started crying. He burst out, βI donβt want that monster to eat you! Bit by bit, tainting you until youβre no longer my daughter.β
Charlieβs expression lightened. βOh Dadβ¦β She leaned over and hugged him. βItβs okay. Really, itβs okay.β She stood straight again. βI know youβre so worried. That Iβve bitten off more than I can chew.β
βI donβt blame you,β her dad made clear. βHe tricked you.β
βI more meant trying to help him better himself.β She finally admitted, βI donβt think I can Redeem him.β Her expression hardened. βThat doesnβt mean that he deserves to be alone! Rejected by everyone, treated like the monster he tries to be.β Thinking on the incident with Katie, she said, βHeΒ actually caresabout us.β
βAs pieces in his game!β
Charlie sighed and looked away. βI was hoping youβd understand now. I didnβt realize you were stewing like this up there. Iβm sorry I left you alone when you were so anguished about this.β
βCharlie.β His face crumpled. βI love you. I donβt want you to get hurt.β
βDad, Iβm grown up now. I can handle being hurt.β She hugged him. βReally. I just want you to support and help me out as I travel this path.β
He froze for a moment before he hugged her back. A heavy sigh was followed by, βIβm sorry I shoved myself in my tower. Iβ¦I donβt want to lose you too. Thatβs why I threw myself into this.β
Charlie tried to find a silver lining to this mess. βAt least you know new stuff about pacts and soul contracts?β
Her dad laughed bitterly. βI guess thatβs true.β
βYou might know more than Alastor!β Charlie joked.
The two jumped apart as the staticy voice butted in. Charlie looked behind her dad and said, βAlastor! Hi!β
Alastor stood there, hands settled on the top of his radio cane. The expression on his face was neutral, unreadable. Charlie wondered, how much did he hear?
βI couldnβt help but overhear Charlieβs defense of her capabilities,β Alastor said, staring down her dad. βI couldnβt agree with her more.β Charlie was surprised by his next words. βI think she can handle me and my need for power! Sheβs stronger than you seem to think.β
Her dadβs jaw flapped for a few moments before he rolled his eyes. βOf course she can take you! The problem is taking youΒ without dyingΒ from your cursed pact!β
Alastorβs eyes narrowed. βYou certainly seem to have some idea that Iβm going toΒ double-crossΒ my dear brides!β
Her dad jutted his chin out. βWell? Are you?β
βHaha! Your distrust is rather amusing!β His smile grew twisted, green magic seeping around his hand. βIβm willing to make a deal on this!β
Charlie and her dadβs jaws both dropped. βWhat?β was all Charlie could say.
Alastor was focused on her dad. βWhat do you think? Iβll ensure that I wonβt backstab Charlie or Vaggie. In fact, Iβll take very good care of them!β
Her dad picked up his jaw and glared. βWhat do you want in return?β
Alastor examined his cane. βOh, nothing much.β He twirled it and tapped it against the ground. βI simply want a guarantee of your support of this wedding!β
He looked like he was punched. βΒ SupportΒ this?! How can I-?! HOW DARE YOU!β
βCome come now. Youβre convinced that Iβm trying to pull something. Why not ensure that your daughter will be safe and happy?β Alastor said it like it was a no-brainer.
βAnd the failure clause?β her dad asked.
βHmβ¦ It must be something weβll both feel a hit from.β Alastor pretended to think. Then he snapped his fingers. βI know! How about whoever breaks the deal is sacrificed to break the engagement pact?β
Her dad narrowed his eyes. βYou and I both know that I wouldnβt work as a sacrifice.β
βOh?β Alastor took the book her dad had and turned it to a specific page. Pointing at a passage, he exclaimed, βWell look here! βA Seraphimβs soul and blood can be sacrificed to break most deals.β And, as you know, being a blood-relation makes the power of the curse breaking intensify.β
Her dad bit his lip to the point of drawing golden blood. Then he spat the blood into his hand and held it out. βDeal.β
Alastorβs soul magic spun about them as he cut his own palm with a claw and spread the red blood along it. Then he took her dadβs hand and shook on it. Charlie saw the same threads that permeated her deal wind their way around Alastor and their locked hands. The green aura screamed out from the epicenter that was them. It nearly blew Charlie over.
After a solid minute of sickening magic swirling around the hotel, catching all the guests off-guard it was over. Their hands broke as her dad took several breaths, eyes closed.
βThere.β Her dad wiped the wound to his lip out of existence.
βExcellent! Now then,β Alastor clapped his hands and a vast array of suits suddenly appeared in the lobby, βI require some assistance picking out a tuxedo.β A smug smile was followed by, βWould you be willing toΒ help support the weddingΒ by helping me find one that meets our needs?β
Her dadβs eye twitched violently. With his teeth grinding together, he said, βIβdΒ loveΒ to.β
βExcellent!β Alastor led him into the maze of tuxedos. βNow, my dear Charlie wishes to have some poofy clothes for the wedding. I was thinking of something similar to a zoot suitβ¦β
As their voices vanished into the winding labyrinth, Charlie felt rather taken aback. Did Alastor just use her to make a deal with her dad?
