the only time I did exist to anyone was when the other people my age started saying I'd shoot up the school and had a list of people I wanted to kill

I didn't of course. It broke my fucking heart knowing that people thought I would hurt them. But now I'm depressed, socially stunted, and haven't had nearly enough life experiences to try and make it on my own. I never experienced young love or going out with friends, and I'm 27. I haven't even had my first kiss yet, lol.

When I came out publicly large swaths of my previous class mates told me they were kind to me in school because they wanted to be spared when I show up to school with a gun.

Simple question, right?

Except… he suddenly got defensive. His tone changed. I could feel tension building, and I had no idea why. So I took a breath and asked, “Wait, what did you hear me say?”

He paused, thought about it, and said, “I thought you meant ‘Why aren’t you doing anything?’ Like you were mad I was being lazy.”

But that wasn’t what I meant at all. I’d genuinely just been curious.

And that moment reminded me how easily things can go sideways when we assume intent. Our brains, especially when we’ve had messy pasts, trauma, or relationship anxiety, tend to fill in the blanks with the worst possible meaning.

But that one question, “What did you hear me say?”, turned what could’ve been an argument into understanding.

It gave both of us a chance to clarify before our brains made up a story that wasn’t true. I was able to explain, and he was able to listen. Understanding what I meant changed his tension entirely.

Sometimes the fight isn’t about what was said. It’s about what was heard.

some people want to go immediately from bourgeois civilization to a stateless, classless society. they’re all for communism in theory, but they don’t like "state socialism." they don’t like the dictatorship of the proletariat. these are like people who say that transitioning reinforces gender roles, and people should just abolish gender immediately instead. their phrase "state socialism" is like the rhetorical figure of the "binary trans woman." marxists are those who recognize that the dictatorship of the proletariat is the egg actually getting to be a girl, and that eggs getting to actually be girls is the concrete path to ultimately abolishing gender.

however, getting to actually be a girl is not the end of her troubles. she might be subjected to counter-revolutionary plots and even military attacks, which are like transmisogynistic smear campaigns and physical violence. their goal is to isolate her, force her back into the closet, or to kill her, and they will always play the victim if she defends herself. she will find that some of her old friends who liked when she was an effeminate boy fighting for higher wages, shorter hours, and public services don’t want to talk to her anymore now that she’s a woman expropriating the property of the bourgeoisie.

she also has to take on the tasks of running society, which is difficult because her only experience is the old way of doing things. there are lots of different ways to be a girl and she has to spend some time experimenting to find her new identity, and she might do things that are excessive in one way and then in another in the process. on top of this, she is still dysphoric and traumatized, and she might self-harm or lash out. the people who want to tear her down will obviously pounce on all of these opportunities.

If your character carries a childhood trauma of "being bullied for being different than other kids" and the thing that made them "different" was something like accelerated healing, ability to talk to animals, or using magic... You're taking a stupid cliché shortcut.

if they can heal, give them a disability or an impairment

if they can understand all languages of the world and beyond, make them mute

if they can convince anyone with their voice, make them lisp or stutter

if they can see the future, make them blind or visually impaired

Water bending? Cry a lot for anything or wetting themselves (that's a bit extreme)

Fire bending? Perpetual marks on skin resembling burns

magical strenght? Chronical illness

Magic wisdom? Neurodivergency

And so on and on (ofc the kids can't heal themselves)

If you dare, make it last till adulthood. Kid's don't get bullied for habing cool abilities, rather physical things. Make sure it's the first thing the other kids see and bully your chosen one for it. So when the stuttering girl comes running in that her song can convince someone to do anything, all the kids laugh and make fun of her stutter. "The st-st-stuttering girl thinks she can s-s-s-sing!" The kid ofc runs away, cries about it and probably never flexes their power again in front of others.

You (technically) get a kid being bullied for their special power

They have trauma from it (probably hiding their powers as long as they can)

the grown up child realises that it was their powers that make them not live full childhood and feel robbed of it (pretty cool thing to write about imho)

You get a pretty cool magic system (magic always takes something from you, it has a cost)

If you thing more about it, you could even have adults in your story that have hidden their power for so long, they no longer can control it and are left with their disabilities making their life in their medievalesque world so hard they have to begg for a living (which could be a pretty cool social commentary)

The humans hate this so, so much.
