Basilcock World
Imagine an ecosystem where all Tetrapods are members of the Basilisk/Cockatrice clade. What is this ecosystem like? What varieties and subclades are there? Are there basilisk equivalents to crocodiles and marine reptiles? Are there cockatrice equivalents to penguins and harpy eagles. Is there Sapient life? If so, what is it like.
Flight Magic
Dragons fly with magic, everyone knows that. Everyone also knows how this magic works. When a dragon flaps their wings, fin-like structures growing from behind a dragon’s shoulders, it generates the magic required for a dragon to get off the ground.
Wings are needed, but only the flapping. Small wings can flap too, and save space. Large wings can flap, and serve as ornate display structures.
So the prompt: If dragons need wings to flap, but everything else about the wing is free to evolve, what do dragons look like? Do females have small wings just for escape? Do males have ornate display structures with elaborate frills and colors? Have any dragons lose their wings entirely, rendering them flightless?
There’s some important unspoken questions here I think I need to address first.
How many “flaps” does it take before the flight magic activates? Furthermore, does more flapping generate more magic and if so, does that make them go faster?
If it takes more than one flap, then depending on how many I can imagine lots of dragons with hummingbird or dragonfly wings that beat rapidly. If flapping faster makes them fly faster through magic, I imagine some dragons using this to become airborne cheetahs, able to chase down any other creature they please.
There’s other questions too, like “can flight magic be applied to swimming?” or “can the magic flaps evolve to generate other types of energy?“ but I think I’ll save those for another day.
Bothering me that worm, wurm, werm, wirm, and wyrm are all pronounced the same, which is every vowel except "a," because that turns the word into "warm," but "warm" is pronounced the way "worm" actually looks.
An interesting worldbuilding project could be to have these all be different species of dragons, and then figure out what the differences between a wyrm, wirm, and werm is.
Ooh! I’d like to take a crack at this one too!
Wyrm: these are your classic European dragons. 4 legs, wings, breath weapon.
Wurm: classic Asian dragons. 4 legs, flight without wings, may or may not have a breath weapon, but more magical regardless.
Worm: an in-universe abbreviation of what modern fantasy calls lindworms; 2 legs, serpentine body, cannot fly, may or may not have a breath weapon.
Werm: dragon mimics! They don’t have any sort of magical or elemental breath, but they look like dragons, can have flexing frills or membranes to mimic wings, and a bombardier beetle-esque defense of what looks like boiling vomit.
Wirm: winged snakes that make in-universe taxonomists tear out their hair in confusion. Amphipteres and Feathered Serpents that seem related to Wurms, Wyrms, and Worms sometimes, but not at others.
Bonus - Warm: Barely even dragons, these are essentially lizard dogs that like snuggling up to warm-blooded animals of all kinds for warmth. What marks them as draconic at all is the magic that makes even the most belligerent creatures accept their presence without issue.
Dragon World
A long time ago, an ancient and powerful (and potentially non-native) dragon died. Anything that fed on the corpse (bacteria, scavengers, fungi, plants) were transformed into Draconic entities. Anything that then fed on them was transformed as well.
Now the entire setting is full of only Draconic life, down to the microbes.
What lives here?
- Trees with sap like that of the Socotra dragon’s blood tree are quite common; another common feature is ‘scaly’ bark a la Lepidodendron. Coniferous trees with horny, spiky pinecones are very common.
- Even more pyromaniacal eucalyptus trees; poison ivy that induces outright disease in whatever brushes against it - hell, actively venomous plants in general are DEFINITELY gonna be big.
- Some plant seeds germinate into vaguely humanoid horrors that walk to new places to take root, slaughtering herbivores as they go to fertilize the ground.
- Mushrooms taking on shapes like malformed horns, fins, wings, and spines.
- Pyrophilic ecosystems are now the norm across much of the planet.
- Jellyfish with menbranous fins and ‘wings’ decorating their bells and tentacles like coiling dragon’s tails.
- Centipedes tend to use electricity in place of venom now.
- Slugs that leave trails of blight wherever they go with fleshy spines and crests that they can inflate when threatened to advertise their lethality.
- Cockatrices are smalltime compared to what happened to the waterfowl and the ratites.
- The oceans are like an Olaus Magnus map come to life, crammed with all manner of monstrous life.
- Herds of grootslangs shake the veldt beneath their feet, while kirin-esque antelope and zebra watch both ground and air alike for griffins, keythongs, and shisas.
- Weasels ate themselves into extinction. Literally. They ate themselves.

Dragon Mimics
In a world where dragons rule, many lesser creatures imitate them.
Dragons start life out as snakes. Other snakes and serpents therefore evolve to mimic juvenile dragons.
This includes other "supernatural" serpents. Amphisbaena, for example, try to mimic juvenile Hydras.
There are caterpillars which mimic snakes. There are some moth and butterfly species whose species mimicked juvenile (and serpentine) dragons, then when they mature the adults continue to mimic the adult, flying dragons.
World Pythons
Cosmic Pythons which are planets, and their markings determine where land masses are. Dark patches are oceans, lighter patches land. They slither through space, or maybe some curl up and sleep. Maybe two try and devour one another.
Mass extinctions happen when a python sheds its skin.

Vermin Dragons
Not every dragon is large and powerful. There are smaller species as well, some of which find their ways into human houses. Everyone knows about Pukis and Aitvaras, but what about their smaller, less welcomed cousins? Collectively known as Vermes, what are these dragons like?
What brings Vermes into human dwellings? Do they hunt other pests? Eat human waste and garbage?
What hunt Vermes? Is this perhaps what lures Aitvaras and Pukis into homes?
Environmental Dragons
Dragons exist as the heart and souls of natural landmarks. The bigger the landmark, the more powerful the dragon. So what would a dragon based on the following be like:
Yellowstone
Everest
The Amazon
The Ring of Fire
The Mariana Trench
Etc
Saint George’s Cladogram
Speculative Dragon Cladogram made up of every dragon Saint George is depicted as slaying. Some rules:
The depictions are accurate to the dragon. If the depiction gives it three heads, it has three heads. If the depiction gives it forelegs and feathered wings, it has forelegs and feathered wings.
It's a monophyletic group. No "this one is a mammal while this one is a bird." They're all in the Dragon Clade.
Only use dragons Saint George is depicted as fighting.
Dragon Fledglings
Like birds, dragons carefully raise their young, often with both parents doing their part. Also like birds, dragons go through a fledgling stage, when they’ve left the nest but can’t fly yet, and their parents occasionally check in.
Does a Fledgling Dragon have their breath weapon yet?
What dangers might this young dragon face? Predators? The Elements?
Do they look different from the adults? If so, how?

Farm Dragons
Dragons exist, and humans have managed to domesticate them as livestock. With a group of creatures as wide and varied as dragons, what uses do they serve?
What sort of jobs around the farm might dragons have? Are they used to pull plows or seed fields? Are they used for their water and rain controlling powers to help irrigate crops?
Are their scales sheered to produce armor or clothing? Or perhaps their shed skin is used as a leather alternative?
What motivated domesticating large, toxic predators?
Pastoral Dragons
Dragons are intelligent creatures. They’re also carnivores. Farming crops was never really an option for them, but farming livestock is. Dragons form Pastoral societies, herding their livestock through family territories.
Which members of the family have which jobs? Do dragons too young to fly live among the herds like sheep dogs?
Do dragons ritually modify their horns in imitation of the herds they farm?
What livestock do dragons herd? Sheep and cattle, of course, but maybe elephants and giraffe as well? Or perhaps there are no mammals, and they herd saurian livestock.
